THIS WEEK AT THE CENTER… THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 10, 2019

St. Martin of Tours FRENCH SAINT, WRITTEN BY: The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica

St. Martin of Tours, (born 316, Sabaria, Pannonia [now Szombathely, Hungary]—died November 8, 397, Candes, Gaul [France]; Western feast day, November 11; Eastern feast day November 12), patron saint of France, father of monasticism in Gaul, and the first great leader of Western monasticism. Of pagan parentage, Martin chose Christianity at age 10. As a youth, he was forced into the Roman army, but later—according to his disciple and biographer Sulpicius Seve-rus—he petitioned the Roman emperor Julian the Apos-tate to be released from the army because “I am Christ’s soldier: I am not allowed to fight.” When charged with cow-ardice, he is said to have offered to stand in front of the battle line armed only with the sign of the cross. He was imprisoned but was soon discharged. Legend holds that while he was still in the military and a catechumen of the faith, Martin cut his cloak in half to share it with a beggar. That night, he dreamed that Jesus himself was clothed with the torn cloak. When he awoke, the garment was restored. Moved by this vision and appar-ent miracle, Martin immediately finished his religious in-struction and was baptized at age 18. On leaving the Roman army, Martin settled at Poitiers, un-der the guidance of Bishop Hilary. He became a missionary in the provinces of Pannonia and Illyricum (now in the Bal-kan Peninsula), where he opposed Arianism, a heresy that denied the divinity of Christ. Forced out of Illyricum by the Arians, Martin went to Italy, first to Milan and then to the island of Gallinaria, off Albenga. In 360 he rejoined Hilary at Poitiers. Martin then founded a community of hermits at Ligugé, the first monastery in Gaul. In 371 he was made bishop of Tours, and outside that city he founded another monastery, Marmoutier, to which he withdrew whenever possible. As bishop, Martin made Marmoutier a great monastic com-plex to which European ascetics were attracted and from which apostles spread Christianity throughout Gaul. He himself was an active missionary in Touraine and in the country districts where Christianity was as yet barely known. In 384/385 he took part in a conflict at the imperial court in Trier, France, to which the Roman emper-or Magnus Maximus had summoned Bishop Priscillian of Ávila, Spain, and his followers. Although Martin opposed Priscillianism, a heretical doctrine renouncing all pleasures, he protested to Maximus against the killing of heretics and against civil interference in ecclesiastical matters. Priscillian was nevertheless executed, and Martin’s continued in-volvement with the case caused him to fall into disfavour with the Spanish bishops. During his lifetime, Martin ac-quired a reputation as a miracle worker, and he was one of the first non-martyrs to be publicly venerated as a saint.

A Prayer for Veterans To Know You God

“Almighty God, You know every veteran by name. You know their deeds, their hard work, and their

perseverance. You know their needs, both material and spiritual.

Please draw each one closer to you and grant them all the peace

that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7), the peace of Christ to rule in their hearts (Colossians 3:15), and ‘joy in your presence,

with eternal pleasures at your right hand’ forevermore (Psalm 16:11).” Courtesy Guideposts.org

News From The Streets…

Only God Knows

By Mary Martha Primerano When our team goes out on Saturdays, we make sure

to start off our ministry with prayer. Our hearts’ cry has always been, “Holy Spirit, guide us to those who need a touch from you today.” At times, it will require us to roll up our sleeves, reach down, and actually pick up the suffering. When we met Henry, he was a shirtless stranger across the street from a hospital, sprawled flat on his back with only a bed sheet under-neath him. It was obvious he had just been released because he still had several round electrodes stuck to his skin.

Once the team approached him, we offered him some bottled water, and he immediately began pouring it into his mouth. We could see that he was severely dehydrated, which isn’t surprising even at 11:00 a.m. in Houston. Henry had nothing but the sheet, clothes on his back, wallet, and prescrip-tion papers from the doctors. In talking with him, we discovered that he was in the military and the son of an assistant pastor. Where is his family? we wondered. What has happened to his relationships? Only he and God knew.

Walt called for a quick team meeting about what to do next. Henry was upset, stressed, and even angry at us by this point, but we chose then and there to be Good Samaritans. We drove him to the nearest drugstore to buy his antibiotics for his digestive disorder. Once we gave him his medicines, he was very appreciative, kind, and even asked God to bless us.

Sometimes it is more “thorns” than “roses” when deal-ing with people who are hurting, but if we press in and do what Jesus asked us to do, this world will be a much kinder place. I wish I could tell you that we have this whole “homeless thing” figured out, but we don’t. I can tell you though, that we are connected to the One who has all answers to every situation and every person. John 10:27 says, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” If interested in volunteering please contact: Walt Primerano 713.661.7167 or [email protected]

NO ES DIOS DE MU ERTOS

S INO DE V IV OS

San Lucas 20,27-38.
