Message f rom t he President of t he Savoyard Light Opera Com pany

Dear Friends,

Tonight?s production of Rogers and Hammerstein?s Carousel marks our 47th season since our inception in 1971. Whether we are singing at events for the Carlisle Counsel on Aging, at the annual FRS Green sale, or performing for you in front of the footlights, we are extremely grateful for the warm welcome which this community has provided us over the years. We have been fortunate in the strong support we have received from our important ?partners,? such as the Carlisle School System, the First Religious Society, and the Carlisle Historical Society. We would also like to thank The Mosquito for its kind assistance in helping us publicize our productions.

Bringing you shows of exceptional quality, year after year, requires the participation of literally hundreds of individuals and organizations. Our cast, crew, and sponsors come from as nearby as downtown Carlisle to as far away as New Hampshire and Rhode Island. It is truly a community and regional effort to bring together the resources necessary to make musical theater come to life. While we work diligently to keep our shows affordable, each year it seems to take more and more resources. Ticket sales do not cover our expenses and we depend on the generosity of a substantial number of donors. We invite you to join this group. Let me also ask you to note the wonderful sponsors who have taken ads in our playbill. I would ask that you show your appreciation for the sponsors noted by supporting them whenever possible. Also, please let them know that you saw their ad in our playbill.

We are very excited to bring you tonight?s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein?s Carousel. The story is one rich in dramatic scope, and the score is peerless. We have been truly fortunate in being able to assemble such a fine cast and crew in order to bring this production to life. We think you?re in for areal treat, so hop on board and get ready to grab the brass ring for tonight?s production of Carousel!

Thomas M. Frates, President, Savoyard Light Opera Company

Direct or 's Not e

Welcom e to The Savoyard Light Opera Company?s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein?s immortal classic Carousel. The original production opened in 1945, and is considered a landmark in the history of musical theater. The story is based on Ferenc Molnar?s semi-autobiographical play, Liliom. Molnar?s play was considered so rich in character that musical giant Giacomo Puccini had tried (unsuccessfully) to acquire the dramatic rights in order to use the story as the basis of one of his operas. The characters are real humans with all their flaws and strengths. Themes include love, life, and death among people who have led underprivileged, and frequently tragic existences. The narrative shows how an individual?s actions can have far reaching consequences, affecting future generations.

The score to Carousel was considered by its composer, Richard Rodgers, to be the finest and most artistically satisfying of his career. In his autobiography Musical Stages, Rodgers wrote ?Oscar never wrote more meaningful or more moving lyrics, and to me, my score is more satisfying than any I?ve ever written. It affects me deeply every time I see it performed.? Hammerstein?s contribution to the narrative holds out hope of redemption for what might appear to be the most unworthy of souls.

This is a complicated show, both technically and dramatically. It requires performers who are not only excellent singers, but also excellent actors. Add to that the fact that the story requires a fully functioning carousel. As such it is rarely performed. This is indeed a pity, as we, like Rodgers, feel that it is a deeply moving story, and should be shared with all generations.

I have had a wonderful experience with this year?s production staff, cast, and crew. We welcomed back many people from prior years, and we also have many new faces, both on and off stage. Having performed in Carousel on two separate occasions, it is a pleasure to watch others interpret the words and music. It has been truly thrilling to watch this show brought to light by gifted actors, singers, and dancers under the guidance of our talented production team, and we sincerely thank you, our audience for making this possible.

Thank you for joining us this year. I hope you?ll enjoy his production, and remember ?always look on the bright side of life?? Oops, is that from another show? ?!

Cast and Crew Biographies

Chad Belanger (Jigger Craigin) is beyond excited, after nearly a two-decade break, to make a return to the stage with the Savoyard Light Opera Co. He has played such role in the past as Anatoly in Chess, Billy in Carousel, and Will Parker in Oklahoma. After studying theatre at AMDA in New York, Chad went on to work for Disney and Universal Studios in Orlando. These days Chad is an accomplished Chef and spends his time with his family and ?Chuck.? Thank you so very much to the SLOC for this wonderful opportunity! Very special thank you to my darling wife Jessica...I love you more.

Connell Benn (Nettie Fowler) is delighted to be returning to the Savoyard stage and to be working with this exceptional cast and crew. You may recall her as the Duchess in last year?s production of Nice Work if You Can Get It, for which she received a DASH nomination. Other roles include Patience in Patience (Sudbury Savoyards), Hope Harcourt in Anything Goes (SLOC), Governor Ferguson in Bonnie and Clyde (Umbrella), and Sister Margaretta in The Sound of Music (CP & Reagle). Connie would like to thank her family for allowing her to indulge in her ever-present hobby, and she promises to get the laundry folded someday.

Deborah Boles (Assistant Stage Director/Assistant Stage Manager) is happy to be working with SLOC for the third time. Theatrical and stage management experience includes Perkins Children Theater, Pinkerton Academy, and McCarthy Middle School Drama Club. She would like to thank her favorite director, Donna, for seeing her passion for the arts and channeling it into the SLOC family. Deb would also like to thank her family, especially her husband, for constant support and understanding during very long production hours. Enjoy the show!

Karen Burum (Hair & Makeup Design). Some favorite past productions in 2016 have been Nice Work If You Can Get It (DASH nomination, Hair & Makeup Design) for the Savoyard Light Opera Co., and in 2015, Follies (DASH Award, Makeup Design),The Desk Set (DASH award, Hair Design), Kiss Me Kate (DASH nomination, Hair Design), as well as The Scarlet Pimpernel (Makeup and Wigs) in 2010, for the Concord Players. Appreciation and cheers to this talented cast, crew, and director for bringing the dramatic, visual, and musical richness of Carousel to life!

Em ily Chapm an (Ensemble) is back for her third SLOC production and, as always, she has loved every minute! In past years, Emily has performed with Open Door Theater, Concord Players, Acme Theater, and Theatre III. By day, she teaches English to high school boys in a juvenile justice program and loves spoiling her three adorable nieces and her two adorable cats. She has amazing friends, some of whom don't even do theater, and feels very blessed by all their love and support. Emily also wants to thank her family, especially Mom and Dad, for always encouraging her to follow her dreams and being her biggest fans.

Andrew Conway (Orchestra Manager) is thrilled to be playing trombone in his eighth SLOC production. He's super excited about playing with this group of exceptional musicians. Andrew plays regularly with other area pit orchestras and the Temple Shir Tikvah Klezmer Band. He is grateful for the inspiration and support of his wife Kimberly and daughters Gemma and Elsa, with whom he has enjoyed many real nice clam bakes.

Donna DeWit t (Stage Director) is very happy to be at the helm again with the Savoyards! Donna has been a member of the company for many years. For SLOC, she has directed or performed in many productions including Once Upon A Mattress, Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S Pinafore, Mikado, Patience, My Fair Lady, Most Happy Fella, Annie Get your Gun, and Kiss Me, Kate (She was nothing more than a baby when she started with SLOC!) Donna has been performing in the Boston area for many years. She has performed with such groups as Turtle Lane Playhouse, Show Stoppers, Hovey, Quannapowitt and Reagle Players. Donna is a graduate in music from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and has performed with the Greater Miami Opera Company as a member of their opera apprenticeship program. She thanks her family for home-front support! A special thank you to Brian? you know why! Also, a big shout out to Deb for being such a great support system for all of us on stage and off!

Pat r icia Dwyer (Ensemble/Beauty of Europe) has been enjoying performance with a great cast and crew at Savoyard Light Opera Theatre for 27 years. She is on her toes as a European Ballerina and grateful to God for all these blessings of song and dance with all these beautiful performers. She also thanks her friends and husband for encouragement and support. Hope everyone enjoys this Great Show.

Piper Har r ing (Snow Child) is thrilled to become part of the Savoyard family, following in both of her older sisters? footsteps. In particular, she is happy to get the chance to work again with Linda St. Francis and Kendra Thyne who were the Director and Choreographer for her 7th Grade Play, at the Carlisle School. Under their fine direction, she played Marion the Librarian in The Music Man.

Margaret Healey (Mrs. Bascombe/2nd Heavenly Friend/Ensemble)is delighted to make her first appearance with SLOC. Recent performances include Man of LaMancha (Horse, Prisoner) at Burlington Players, Amadeus (Viennese Citizen) with the Concord Players, and Equus (Dora) for Theatre@First. Additionally, she performed in The Merry Wives of Windsor (Pistol), Women of Lockerbie, (Woman 1), and an adaptation of An Enemy of the People (Katherine), all with Theatre to Go in Melrose. She has also happily played various roles in Quannapowitt Players' Suburban Holidays FUNdraiser, for four years running. When not appearing on stage, she enjoys lending a hand with front of house or backstage on crew. Many thanks to the cast and production team for making this such a wonderful experience!

Kat hleen Larson Day (Mrs Mullin) is pleased to debut with SLOC. Locally she has appeared with Arlington Friends of the Drama as Mme. Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, with TCAN as Joanne in Company, and with the Sudbury Savoyards as Mad Margaret in Ruddigore and Little Buttercup in HMS Pinafore. A graduate of Walnut Hill School for the Arts and The New England Conservatory, she has performed leading opera roles throughout the country including Central City Opera, Atlanta Opera, Eugene Opera, Sarasota Opera, NY Gilbert & Sullivan Players, and has sung with orchestras throughout the U.S. Love to Chuck, the kids, and my Muskastooges!

Em ily Magnant (Bascombe Ruffian) is thrilled to be a part of Carousel. Emily studies singing in her school?s Select and Jr. District Choruses, and also studies dance. She appeared as Jailbird in Glee & Seahorse in Finding Nemo (Applause Academy). Emily also played Cordelia in Dear Edwina, Disco Diva & Swamp Lady in Croaker, Julietn Seussification of Romeo & Juliet (METG Festival), and is currently Mrs. Potts in the upcoming performance of Beauty and the Beast Jr., all with Parker Middle School Drama in Chelmsford. Break a leg Cast and Crew ? thank you for being so welcoming!

Pet er Maloney (Brother Joshua/Heavenly Friend/Ensemble).Carousel marks Peter 's fourth production with the Savoyards, which suggests that they really are not very fast learners. As always, he is having a great time reuniting with old friends and making new ones. Since this show represents his most lines of dialogue (in a row!) in a SLOC production, he is forced to conclude that he has now become the Bob Uecker of musical theatre. Peter is supported on the home front by wife Beth, daughters Cianne and Sarah, Mickey the cat, golden retriever Molly, and rescue dogs Midas and Keller. Adopt a dog!

Lar ry Mil lner (Mr. Bascombe/Ensemble) is thrilled to be participating in his nineteenth consecutive SLOC production, and will have three generations of wonderfully supportive family in the audience. He bets they?ll all love the show! Larry feels lucky to have sung with groups such as the Granite State Opera, the Sudbury Savoyards and FOPAC, but considers SLOC his theatrical home. He loves performing here and serving on the Board of Directors, where he gets to work with a wonderful group of terrifically talented people. Here?s to being part of Carlisle?s home theater company!

Joy Paradissis Playt er (Ensemble/Beauty of Europe) gets motion sick easily, so no carousels for Joy! She doesn?t even like carnivals ? but does like clams, and all the cast members! She also likes to sing and enjoys the month of June? so? here she is for a 3rd show with this crazy clam-eating bunch of people, who also like the month of June. (Why does she keep talking about clams and June? Watch and learn friends!) Oh, and enjoy the

show while you're at it!

Lil l ian Rogers (Snow Child) is a 9-year-old fourth grader at Center School in Chelmsford. She was bit by the acting bug in 2nd grade after being cast as Gretl in Chelmsford High School's The Sound of Music, where she received a TAMY nomination for the Rising Star award. Her recent roles include JoJo in Seussical the Musical and Chip in Beauty and the Beast Jr. with Spotlight Playhouse. Earlier this year, Lily sported short hair and knickers as Michael Banks in Mary Poppins (ACTORS inc). When Lily is not on stage, she can be found playing soccer, basketball, and dancing. She may be small, but she can do big things!

Alan Rohwer (Ensemble/Prop Master) is happy to be performing in his thirteenth SLOC production. Experience as a pirate, policeman, cowhand, sailor, peer, and fairy, has prepared him well for being a coastal carnival worker and clammer. It is delightful working with Donna, who played a special role in luring him onto the stage. Alan thanks his wonderful wife Mary, and his friends in the audience for their continued support.

Jon Saul (Policeman/Ensemble)is thrilled to return for his 15th SLOC show! It 's a pleasure to do a show with this cast and crew. He has also performed with Theatre III (1776, The Fiddler on the Roof), TCAN, Sudbury Savoyards, and Concord Players (Amadeus, The Scarlet Pimpernel). He appreciates his family and friends? support. His work is as a software tester at MEDITECH, Inc.

Some of John's other community theater roles include Dr. Bradman in Blithe Spirit (Concord Players), Emperor Joseph II in Amadeus (Concord Players), Colonel Melkett in Black Comedy (Acme Theater Productions), and Morgan in The Drawer Boy (Vokes Theatre). In addition to his stage work, John made his network television debut in 2007 when he portrayed New York State Senator William Armstrong in the PBS documentary "Louis Brandeis: The People's Attorney.?

Linda St . Francis (Producer) is happy to be celebrating her 10th year with SLOC. She is happy to return in her role as Producer once more. Corey Auditorium has become her second home, having stage managed, produced, stage directed, or performed in 17 productions on this stage. This spring she will be Stage Director for the Carlisle Middle School production of Seussical Jr. Linda is grateful to the loyal and hard working production staff that were instrumental in bringing this talented cast to life on stage. They make the magic happen! When not working on a show Linda is an Emergency Room RN ? a perfect career match, given how many legs seem to always be breaking around her!

Isabella Synnest vedt is excited to be a part of Carousel. In her elementary school years, Isabella took part in multiple productions. Last year, she performed in the 7th Grade Play, Shrek Jr, as Teen Fiona, a Dragonette, and a Forest Fairy. She is now in 8th Grade at Carlisle Public Schools. She sings in the Carlisle Middle School Choir and Advanced Choir. Offstage, she plays softball and runs cross-country. Thanks for the great experience!

Kendra Thyne (Choreographer) danced professionally with Oakland Ballet and Winifred R. Harris?s Between Lines in California. Kendra holds a BFA in Ballet from the University of the Arts. Now in its 30th season in Carlisle, the Savoyard Light Opera Company has proximate roots reaching back 47 years to Maynard, and deeper roots reaching back to London, where the first Gilbert and Sullivan Collaboration, Thespis, was produced in 1871. The present company started in 1971 when a group of Maynard townspeople produced H.M.S. Pinafore as part of that town?s centennial celebration. It was a great success and so much fun for the participants that they undertook annual productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, thus initiating a tradition.

By 1980, with 10 productions to its credit, the group formally incorporated as the Maynard Savoyards, drawing their name from the fact that the works written by Gilbert and Sullivan are known as the Savoy Operas after the Savoy Opera House built by Richard D?Oyly Carte for those charming and timeless musicals. The Savoy Theater (next to the Savoy Hotel, both named for Savoy Manor, which once stood on the site on the Strand in London) was destroyed by fire. Happily, the theater was rebuilt and opened again in 1993, where a revived D?Oyly Carte Opera Company performs from time to time. The Savoy Hotel has recently reopened after extensive renovations.

In 1983, the Board changed the name from the Maynard Savoyards to the Savoyard Light Opera Company, recognizing that they derived their players and audiences not only from the Maynard area but also from all of eastern Massachusetts, and anticipating the possibility the group might wish to depart from the strict canon of G&S operettas, thus infusing new blood and new musical versatility and attracting new audience members.

The anticipated departure did not actually occur until 1990 with the production of Little Mary Sunshine. Since that time, in addition to performing the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, we have presented other classic musicals chosen because their wit and musicality. This year?s production of Nice Work if You Can Get It follows that tradition.

The Company espouses the ambition to produce shows of near professional quality, featuring full orchestra. Auditions are required of all performers, including the ensembles, and the Company has been fortunate in attracting some of the best talent in the area. Our tradition of excellence extends back through 47 years here in Massachusetts and, perhaps it is not too much to say, through 147 years to the masters in London? and their successors on Broadway? who created so much joyful poetry and music.
