This is a true story about an event involving Matthew Davila of Troop 132 at Holy Child Church

by Adrian Davila

I have never been happier that Matt is in scouts. One day in May my wife, Gabriella, took the two younger kids, Christopher and Giuliana, to pizza. Matt and I were not supposed to go but decided to meet them there.

When we were all done, Giuliana insisted on having one of those red and white hard mint candies. Giuliana started to choke on it and couldn’t talk. She was just holding her throat. She started to turn slightly purple.

Matt did not panic and very calmly and instantly went into action and started the Heimlich maneuver and saved his sister’s life. He did not panic and freak out yet took control and handled the situation like a true hero.

He must’ve really listened to the First Aid lessons he learned in Scouts.

This October, Matthew was awarded the “Medal of Merit for Life Saving Actions” from the BSA National Court of Honor.

Say It Loud God is with us

By Peg Ekerdt

My brother is a newspaper journalist by day and a novelist by night. I texted him the other day to ask if he had received any feedback about his new manuscript. He said it was moving along in the review process but he had been warned not to expect quick results. I responded, “Talk to Mom. I am serious. She’s helping me with a couple of things.”

That might seem like a fairly routine suggestion for one sibling to make to another. Except for the fact that Mom died nine months ago. Nonetheless, in the last several months, I have expressed my heart’s concerns to her and asked her to intercede. I have asked. And help has come. My brother’s response: “I’ll let you know what she says.”

Fifteen minutes later another text arrived on this string between my brother and me. It read: “Now I’m in the office gym on lunch break and the first thing I see is “Days of Our Lives” credits on the TV screen, so I’m thinking you are right.” Older sister that I am, I shot back: “I know I am right.” My mother watched the soap opera “Days of our Lives” for over 50 years and was so intent on the storyline that she once prayed at Mass for a cast character who had died — in the show. It was clear to me that our mother was assuring my brother that she is with God — and thus she remains with us from within God’s communion of saints. And he got the message. My brother, skeptical journalist that he is, recognized God in the moment.

I have been in church ministry nearly my entire adult life. Like many of you, I have known times of frus-tration or even moments of panic that no matter how late I stay at work or how many hours I log, the list of things I want to do remains long. There doesn’t seem to be enough time to return phone calls, send emails, be present to individuals in times of crisis or illness, accompany families at the time of the death of a loved one, meet with en-gaged couples, help plan meaningful liturgies, or give proper due to the people who are the interruptions — and ministry — of my days. And the desire to read, to think and to pray often remains more desire than reality.

When I am most overwhelmed, or afraid of failing to meet the needs of the many, I am much more in-clined to hand the worries, the unmet needs and the questions to God if I remember that I am not in charge but God is. I literally have said aloud on many occasions, “This is yours, Lord — if you want it to happen, make it happen. I am doing my part. You have to do more.” I think the Jesuits would call this surrender: All I know is that God helps get it done. Invariably, peace comes. And I know in my heart of hearts, God is with each and every one of us.

God does make the connections in our lives. God does help us. In the seeming coincidences of our days, or in the insights that come in the silence of night and the dawn of day, God is with us. When problems are solved, or fresh ideas emerge to provide new direction, God is with us. And when we receive the assistance of those who now live among the communion of saints, God is with us.

I don’t know about you, but for many years, talking about God’s action in my life did not come naturally to me. I felt no need, was perhaps embarrassed to say so, and in fact did not have the language to acknowledge my real sense that God was helping me. I did not give credit to God even though it was dawning on me that I did not labor alone. It is a weird feeling to think God cares enough about the comparatively insignificant challenges of my life to lift a hand and make the connection for me or for those I hold in prayer. But I know God does. And I have come around to what many have known for a long time. Saying it aloud strengthens my belief.

And this insight that I think is mine? Well it isn’t, really. As the letter to Timothy reminds us this first Sunday in October: “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love...so do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord” (2 Timothy 1:7,8).
