High fivesIt’s often tough to know what to do when the

bidding escalates quickly, and the judgment to dothe right thing is what often separates the winnersfrom the losers.

About half way through the first qualifyingsession of the Bobby Nail Life Master Open Pairs,Robert Levin and Steve Weinstein, one of ACBL’stop pairs, were having a lackluster game. Thencame a string of boards where the bidding ended atthe five level. Their good judgment helped turntheir game around. It started with board 15.

Levin did very well to bid on to 4♠. The bestthat North-South could do from that point was plus100 for 4♠ doubled. North went on, however, suffering down one when Weinstein, after winningthe sxA at trick one, switched accurately to the ♦9,assuring three tricks for the defense. Plus 100 wasgood for 23 out of 25 matchpoints for Levin andWeinstein. Minus 100 would have been worth 18.5MP’s.

Levin’s 4♥ bid showed a slammish hand of hisown, and indeed he took a long time before passinghis partner’s second double. As you can see, thefive level is minus territory for East-West becauseof the diamond ruff South has coming. Plus 500 for

5♥ doubled was worth 16.5 MPs.There were more high-level decisions to make

Levin’s hand isn’t great, but the five-card spadesuit – and an opponent who seemed to be trying toget away with something – might have temptedsome players to bid instead of doubling. Turns outEast-West can’t legitimately make even 10 tricks.Levin and Weinstein could get 5♥ only one trick, but it was good for 19 matchpoints.

The next board produced the fourth straightfive-level finish.

There was no way 5♦ was going down – and ifWest doesn’t get a heart ruff, the contract wouldmake with an overtrick. Of course, with an openerbased entirely on a seven-card suit, Levin had nothoughts of sitting for the double – and he camewithin a hair of making his contract. He took thediamond opening lead in dummy, ruffed a hearthigh, pulled the outstanding trump with a low oneto dummy, ruffed another heart high, ruffed his lastdiamond in dummy, ruffed another heart high andentered dummy with a low trump. Now he playedthe ♣J, and if North had been dealt a singletonhonor, the contract was going to make with a forcedruff-sluff. North won the ♣K, however, andreturned the suit. Minus 200 was worth 13matchpoints.

It’s a grand slam, but only by North

By Barry RigalThe field played this deal in 6NT, and rightly

so. But our opponents had a chance to play thehighest scoring contract. They could have declared7♥ from the North side.Board 17 ♠ A K 3 2Dlr: North ♥ A J 5Vul: None ♦ A 10

North opened 2♣ and South responded 2NT,which showed hearts since 2♥ would have been adouble negative. Anyone could take the diamondfinesse and score all 13 tricks when the finessesucceeds.

However, the true expert doesn’t take thefinesse. He wins the trump lead and draws fourrounds of trumps, pitching a diamond from dummy.East can afford to discard a diamond and a spade, but then he’s caught. A spade lets declarer ruffs outthe spade and then he goes to the ♣K to cash the13th spade. A diamond is fatal immediately. A clubdiscard allows declarer to cash four clubs for thespade-diamond ruffing squeeze.

Note that the contract must be played by North. With South as declarer, West can lead a diamond toset up East’s king.

Did you note on your hand record that DeepFinesse says you can make 7♥ as North but only6♥ as South?

After you bid game, you have to make it

Deep Finesse says you can make 10 tricks atnotrump on this deal, but that’s double dummy.Declarers in general had trouble to getting to gamein the first place, then found it very difficult to findeven nine tricks.

(1) Hearts and diamonds.Tim Crank, a Junior playing with Frank

South a low heart to North’s queen (!), and theheart return went to South’s 10. He switched to the♠2, and naturally Crank went up with dummy’sking. He led a diamond and, based on the bidding, successfully finessed the 10. He got out with a heartto South’s king, and South continued with a club.Crank took the king and cashed the ♠A. Next heled a spade to South’s queen. He switched to the♣Q and Crank took dummy’s ace.

Now he called the ♠10, and that was the end.North had to keep three diamond to cover dummy’ssuit, and he also had to hold onto the ♥Q. Since hecan keep only three cards, he had to give up.

The Callihans sold Jourdan’s in 1995 butremained regular club players. They were alsobridge directors on cruises.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Page 5Daily Bulletin

New players’ friend: Alice KinninghamIt’s the goal of every

ACBL employee to makesure players have a goodtime at tournaments.

Alice Kinningham, thetournament director who isin charge of the new playerprogram for the Fall NABCin Orlando, takes her jobespecially seriously.

The Aurora CO residentknows how important it isfor the ACBL to make agood first impression.

“I want the new playersto be involved so they arehappy, comfortable – andcoming back,” saysKinningham.

The native of Memphis took up bridge while she was in college – at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson TN – which is where she met her husband, Wayne, now retired from Lockheed management.

Kinningham got into teaching bridge and eventually directing becausethat’s what she naturally likes to do – and she is proud of the fact that she hasmade an impression on a lot of players through the years.

“There are many people who come up to me even after they have outgrownthe IN games,” Kinningham says, “to tell me how they are doing. I love it.”

West North East South4♠ Pass Pass 5♦All Pass

The opening lead is the ♠K. You (South) arethe declarer. Plan the play.

West’s opening bid of 4♠ normally describesa hand with a strong eight-card suit and fewerthan 10 high-card points. It is a preemptiveopening bid and it causes the opponents fits.

Do not make the mistake of opening with athree bid when you have an eight-card suit and apreemptive hand. Opening three of a suit whenholding a reasonable eight-card suit puts youright back in kindergarten.

You (South) can do no less than bid 5♦ when4♠ comes around to you. Be thankful you have astrong suit of your own. It is not always this easyto find the right trump suit after a 4♠ openingbid.

On to the play. Before playing from dummyto the first trick, review the bidding to see if yougarner any information. It never hurts to countyour tricks. You should come up with 11: sevendiamonds, two hearts and two black aces — justwhat the doctor ordered.

No so fast. West figures to have eight spadesand that means East is void.

Translation: if you play the ♠A at trick one, that trick is not going into your pile. East isalmost sure to ruff. So long, farewell, aufwiedersehen, good-bye to the ♠A.

If you duck the ♠K and duck again if Westcontinues with the ♠Q, you can ruff the second

spade, draw trumps and eventually use the ♠A todiscard a club.

You will wind up losing one spade and oneclub which is much better than having your ♠Aruffed and losing two clubs to boot.

Points to remember:1. An opening four bid usually shows an eight-

card suit, possibly a seven-bagger with a side four-card suit. In theory, it denies the strength of anopening one bid.

2. If one of your winners is sure to be ruffedand that winner can be used later to take a trick, besmart, play low and don’t allow your winner to beruffed. Partner will be impressed.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both cards of a partnership must beidentical and include the first and last names ofeach member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only the Standard American Yellow Card andmay use only standard carding. This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequentround after convention cards have been properlyprepared and approved by the director. Further, thepartnership will receive a 1/6 board matchpointpenalty for each board played, commencing withthe next round and continuing until the restriction islifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at thediscretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

Pre-Alert formsIf your partnership plays special overcalls, you

must fill out a pre-Alert/disclosure form and makeit available to your opponents when you play inevents that allow Mid-Chart and Super-Chartconventions.

This applies to NABC+, regional or higherknockouts and Flight A Swiss games. Look for thelight blue forms on the table where conventioncards are available.

Bridge Today Daily: Brushing up with Reese

By Pamela GranovetterIt’s been more than 10 years since I’ve played

seriously at an NABC. This fall, however, I’vestarted a partnership with Migry Zur-Campanile,Israel’s star woman player, and we decided to makeOrlando our first tournament. Before today, weplayed together only on the Internet, despite the factI live in Jerusalem and she lives in Tel Aviv, only anhour or so away.

To get back into “bridge shape,” I took out anold copy of Terence Reese’s Play These Hands WithMe. I’ve been reading it for the last few weeks andit’s paid off already. Early in the session in Thursdayevening’s charity event, I used one of his themessuccessfully. It’s really a wonderful feeling whenthat happens – putting into practice what you read ina good bridge book.

West led the ♠J, East followed with the queen. From the 1NT overcall I knew that West had

started with ♠J 10 8 3. So I had two spade losers, two or three heart losers and the ♣A. If the heartswere divided 4-2, I had to find a way to score that♣K in dummy to throw one of my hearts. I won thefirst trick with the ♠A and, remembering one ofReese’s lessons from the book on reducing yourtrumps in a situation where you might later endplayan opponent, I set out on this plan.

At trick two I cashed the ♦A, and at trick three Iled my singleton club. West took the ace and, as Ihoped, returned the ♦K for me to ruff. Then I led alow heart. West won the jack and played the ♦J,which I ruffed. I then cashed the ♥A, West followingwith the king. This was the position from my view:

North♠ —♥ 10 ♦ 8 ♣ K 9 6 5

South♠ K 9 6 5 ♥ 7 5 ♦ —♣ —

I knew West still held the ♠10 8 3, and it lookedas if he was out of hearts. So I led the ♠5 and he wonthe trick with the 8. He played a fourth round ofdiamonds, and East followed with the queen. Iruffed, cashed the ♠K and played my last trump, the9 (I was finally out of trumps). West won and hadnothing to play but clubs, so I scored that ♣K for myeighth trick and was able to thank Migry for thatuseful card (and silently thank Terence for havingbeen such a great bridge writer).

White tops 10,000Michael White, whose first duplicate game

produced an unimpressive 33% score, went on tobetter scores and recently racked up his 10,000thmasterpoint.

White recalls that first game, played while astudent at Georgia Tech: “I came in last but I hadfun and I came back.”

He competed as a Junior player while a studentat the University of Tennessee and now lives inAtlanta, where he plays bridge professionally andsells used books.

He’s been active in Mid-Atlantic bridgeadministration and has represented District 7 inNorth American competition. So far, he hasn’t wona national title but has more than 100 regional wins.

White credits his grandmother, Ester White, forhis competitiveness. “She taught me how to playcasino when I was four.”

He took up bridge in 1984 and plans tocontinue. “I love the game and I’ll play it all mylife.”

Slow play is the curse of the game

By Patty JohnsonPatty Johnson, Sebring FL, is a National

Tournament Director and the Director-in-Chargefor all District 9 (Florida) tournaments.

An old tournament director friend of mine,John “Spider” Harris, was famous for the saying:“Slow play is the curse of the game.” Nothing ismore frustrating for tournament directors thanhaving to herd players along like cattle when slowplay isn’t actually the problem.

If you take a moment to think about it, most ofyour opponents do not take that long to bid or playa deal — yet before you know it, the round is beingcalled and you are nowhere near finished with thelast board.

Here are some suggestions which, if followed, would solve many of our problems.

First: do not post mortem between dealswhether you are in a pair game or a Swiss teamevent. Finish the round and then discuss hands ifthere is still time. We, as directors, will not cut yourtime but I think you will find yourselves under lesspressure by following this suggestion. Remember:we provide hand records in pair games so you don’thave to worry about forgetting a particular holding.

Second: if you are on opening lead, make yourlead before recording the contract in your privatescore. You will have plenty of time after leading torecord the information and still see the entire firsttrick.

Third: unless you have a legitimate reason toleave the table, such as the restroom or a smokebreak, please remain at the table and visit with youropponents. You might actually find this enjoyableand a new way to make friends or future Swissteam partnerships.

I wish we could make these suggestions intorules enforceable by penalty but none of us wants abridge event decided by the pair with the fewestpenalties. All I can do as a director is to ask thecooperation and help of all players because I thinknot only you but everyone else will enjoy theirtournaments more.

Remember: those who enjoy a tournament willcontinue to play. Do your part to make bridgeenjoyable for yourself, your partner and youropponents — you can’t play without them.

LostIf you lost something of value during the

entertainment Friday night, see someone onthe tournament staff to describe your lostitem.

Find the orange boxIf you’re into golf, put your name in the orange,

polka-dotted box at Registration. There will be twodrawings from the box. On Monday, the winningname will receive two golf sessions on the Marriottcourse. On Wednesday, the winner will receive foursessions.

New Life MasterIt’s tough to win masterpoints where Alfred

Brown comes from – St. John’s, Newfoundland. But he and his brother William have been traveling(11 tournaments this year), and now Alfred is a LifeMaster. He went over the top by finishing second inFlight C of last night’s Swiss Teams event. He waspartnered by his brother, and their teammates wereDeloris Reo of San Marcos CA and Marie LynchPeacocke of Dartmouth NS.

Hampson shoots for 2nd Herman Trophy

Geoff Hampson racked up 374.79 points toedge regular partner Eric Greco and take home lastyear’s Herman Trophy, awarded to the ACBLmember who earns the most masterpoints at the falltournament.

Hampson and Greco won the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams (with Malcolm Brachman, MikePassell and Eddie Wold), were 13th in the OpenBoard-a-Match Teams (with the same teammates)and were second in the Blue Ribbon Pairs.

Norwegian expert Geir Helgemo holds theHerman Trophy record: 449.37 masterpoints won atthe 1999 Fall NABC in Boston. Helgemo won twonationally rated events (the Open Board-a-MatchTeams and the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, both with partner Tony Forrester and teammatesRita Shugart and Andrew Robson) and finishedwell in a third event (sixth in the Blue Ribbon Pairswith Richard Freeman).

With his performance, Helgemo broke therecord set by Michael Rosenberg who won 445.77points at the Fall NABC in San Francisco in 1996.Zia won 412.75 points at the same tournament andwas second.

Jeff Meckstroth was the first player to score400 or more points at an NABC, racking up 407.77points at the 1995 Fall NABC in Atlanta. Thatrecord lasted only one year.

The Herman trophy was donated in 1951 bySally Lipton, formerly Mrs. Lou Herman, inmemory of Lou Herman (1908-1950), a Houstonjeweler who was Life Master #218. Mrs. Liptonwas a member of the ACBL office staff in NewYork and an ACBL tournament director.

“Yeah, I saw it, but then you threw a low heartand I thought you had changed your mind.”

All “change” pleaseBy Sandy Friedman

Moving for the second round of the HelenSobel Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs, I spy agently used tissue on my chair. I brush it away, playour boards and start moving for the next round.

As I get closer, I see a crumped medicinewrapper on my seat. Not being shy, I ask thewoman I’m following* to please not leave anythingelse for me unless it’s money.

The next round is called and, once again, I seesome paper on my chair. This time I’m not upsetsince the note reads “Sorry” with a nickel on top.
