Recent news of a shortageof medications used totreat two fairly rare dis-

eases — Gaucher and Fabrydiseases — raises some inter-esting and disturbing ques-tions.

We all remember whenthere was a shortage of gaso-line and it was necessary towait in line to get gas. Thisshortage caused many incon-veniences. However, the con-sequences of a shortage ofgasoline pale in comparisonwith the ramifications associ-ated with the shortage of med-ications.

Today, more people thanever are taking medications.The number of medications aperson takes increases withthe number of years he or sheis alive.

Most people take for grantedthe availability of the drugs they

require to keep them healthy.But is it possible that at sometime, their much needed med-ications will not be available?The answer is yes.

The Food and Drug Admin-istration is aware of this po-tential problem. In 2010, 178drug shortages were reportedto the FDA, and there appearsto be an increase in the num-ber of shortages thus far in2011.

The shortages includeddrugs used to provide anesthe-

sia, treat cancer and certainintravenous medications. It isnot required by drug manufac-turers to inform the FDA thatthey are encountering anydrug shortages. Instead, it isdone on a voluntary basis.

There are many reasons whyshortages take place, but themain ones concern qualitycontrol and manufacturing is-sues. There may also be short-ages of the components of thedrugs. Drug makers can dis-continue making a medicationfor any reason, and the FDAhas no control over that.

Perhaps a bigger worry be-yond the routine shortage ofmedications is the presence ofsome type of disaster that wouldhave a major effect on the pro-duction of drugs.

In anticipation of such a dis-aster, these drugs could bestockpiled. However, there are

difficulties storing drugs forlong periods because most of them have alimited shelf life.

A disaster may prohibitquality control, which is essen-tial in the manufacturing ofmedications. Anything thatimpedes this process can re-sult in the drug not only beingineffective but life-threaten-ing.

The potential shortage ofmedications is a serious prob-lem that requires much moreattention than it has received,and its effects may be deadly.

Dr. Murray Feingold is thephysician in chief of The Fein-gold Center for Children andpresident of the Genesis Fund,a nonprofit organization thatfunds the care of children bornwith birth defects, mental re-tardation and genetic diseases.
