A brunch will follow in the Parish Hall. All are invited to thank God for the past, present and future.

+++++++++++++++++++++++ After months of political rhetoric and an election, we settle down to real life again. This Sunday is the last one of the liturgical year and we end it by remembering that Christ is the King. Our Gospel from Luke remembers the final moments at Calvary. The man whom we call Dismis, the Good Thief, looked at the man next to him who was also being tortured to death on a cross, and said, "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom." What did Dismis see in Jesus that led him to recognize the King of Kings? He did not see any form of physical or political power. Those in political power put him to death. The leaders of the Hebrews, the Sanhedrin, wanted no competition from Jesus. They used the Romans to eliminate Christ. What chance did Jesus have to preserve his physical life in the face of such opposition? It was all quite clear that Jesus had no political power. What did Dismis see? He saw a man who was so thoroughly united to God that the power of God was evident in His every action. Jesus was only concerned with serving His Heavenly Father. If that meant losing disciples because some thought His teaching on eating His Body and drinking His Blood, was too difficult, so be it. He would remain true to the Father. If that meant that calling out those in power to treat their subjects with justice and compassion even though they would perceive these teachings as threats to their power, so be it. Everything that Jesus did, He did in service to the Father and to establish the Kingdom of God. Dismis saw Jesus as the King the world longed for, the one who would govern not by politics but by the love of God. Dismis saw that the Love of God was so powerful in Jesus that He Himself could only be that Love become flesh. "Have you no fear of God for you are subject to the same condemnation?" he had called out to the other criminal. And so we celebrate today, the ending Sunday, claiming that Jesus is the culmination of what we want to govern and to lead us. We can escape the grip of the world around us when the focus of our lives is Christ and directs us to serve God in our every action. We can do this by purely serving the One who created us to love, honor and serve Him in all things and in all people. Jesus Christ is our King. The local Ecumenical Thanksgiving Prayer Service will be on Wednesday, November 23rd, at 7 p.m. at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, 5320 Limestone Rd., Wilmington. All are invited. Thanksgiving Day Mass at Saint John the Beloved Church is at 9 a.m. Non perishable goods will be collected at this Mass for our Parish Outreach.

May we celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday with an attitude of true gratitude. God bestows upon us countless blessings, and for these, we are most thankful. May we continue to be graced and share these blessings in charity with one another. Happy Thanksgiving!

Ministry of Caring Sandwich Schedule November 24 & 25 Sodality / Blue Army

Donations of sandwiches are welcome from all parishioners. Delivery can be made to the hall kitchen door on Thursday evenings 6:30pm to 7:00pm and Friday morning before 9:30am. These sandwiches are taken to the Emmanuel Dining Room to help feed those in need. We are especially in need of sandwiches on the 1st and 4th Fridays of the month.

Adult Altar Servers

We are looking for adult altar servers. Perhaps you are being called by the Holy Spirit to assist in the Liturgy of the Holy Mass. The role of an altar server is integral to the normal celebration of the Mass.

Servers can carry the processional cross and candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.

For anyone who would like to volunteer please call the parish front office (302.999.0211) to make an appoint. Fr. Martin will give proper instruction on the Mass and its parts and their meaning, the various objects used in the liturgy (their names and use), and the various functions of the server. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

St. John the Beloved Outreach office serves those in our community who are in need of food and clothing. The Outreach office charges nothing to our clients and relies on Parish and parishioner donations. If you are unable to provide or bring grocery items to the church please consider a monetary donation to the Outreach office. The Outreach Office handles donations of food and clothing only. You may drop off your items at Church in the vestibule bin. To serve our families each week, we need the following: (Please feel free to use this list as your grocery checklist)

The “Giving Tree” Tags have been placed in the Church vestibule. Please take a tag from the display in the vestibule, and purchase a gift for a child, or a gift certificate for a senior citizen or a family. (Feel free to take more than one tag.) *All gifts must be wrapped, and gift cards should be placed in an envelope. *Tape the “Giving Tree” Tag to the gift package or gift card envelope. *All wrapped and tagged gifts must be returned at the Masses on the weekend of December 10/11. *You may leave gifts in the Lay Sacristy (on the left as you enter the Church vestibule). *If you miss getting a “Giving Tree” Tag, please consider obtaining a name or item of clothing for a child.

Wrap the gift and attach a note on the outside indicating the clothing size, age level, and whether it is appropriate for a boy, a girl, or either.

If you are not collecting them for yourself, please consider donating your stamps to the SJB Service Club. We are hoping to provide pots and pans to families served by our parish outreach ministry. Stamps can be placed in the envelope in the back of church. The program runs through mid-January. Your generosity is very much appreciated!

The 55+ Group at St. Joseph Parish, Middletown, is planning a 3 day 2 night trip to the Christmas Lights at Virginia Beach/Williamsburg, Va., on December 12-15. There is no age

CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKETS

We provide a Christmas Meal for those in need in our area. The ongoing generosity of our St. John the Beloved parishioners makes this possible. Christmas baskets will be distributed on Saturday, December 17th. We are asking for donations of chicken, ham, or turkey. Medium or large chickens and hams are especially good choices for many of our families. Please purchase the meat entrée you wish to donate, and drop off the meat at the Outreach Office (M,W, or F, 9-10:30 a.m.), or at the Vianney House (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.). If you qualify to receive a free chicken, turkey, or ham through a program at your supermarket, perhaps you may consider donating the meat. Other needed items include canned vegetables, gravy, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, canned yams, or sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, cake mixes, frostings, and aluminum roasting pans. As always, thank you very much for your generosity. Deadline for donations is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7TH.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Among the Catholics seeking religious freedom in America were the Carrolls of Maryland, who arrived in 1649 from Ireland via England. Charles Carroll, born in Annapolis in 1737, was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and was the longest-surviving signer. As was the custom for English Catholics, he attended English schools in Belgium and later university in France. By the time he signed the Declaration, he was the richest man in America, and his decision to sign would hardly go unnoticed by the king.

Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was a Catholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those who signed became traitors to the Crown and risked losing everything. It is said that someone grumbled that there were many men in the world named Charles Carroll, and he could dodge responsibility if he had to. For that reason, he added a flair to his signature, "of Carrollton," making it clear that he put everything at risk.

His cousin John, also an ardent supporter of the American Revolution, was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned to Maryland at the outbreak of hostilities. Upheavals in Europe forced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secular priest. Ultimately, it was John Carroll who was asked to organize the Catholic Church in the new nation. No one was better positioned for this task, a cultured man from an esteemed family, a cherished friend of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and a man so thoroughly attuned to an undercurrent of anti-Catholicism in the colonies that he could charm powerful people to a new point of view.
