From the Editor

I’ll start with an apology. I promised a more detailed breakdown of the

aftermath of the Village SOS programme on Taste Tideswell and the School of Food this month. By the time you read this it’ll have been on twice (a 1.45 am repeat!). Time has ripped the mat from beneath my feet unfortunately and I just haven’t had time to put anything together.

However we are hoping to get the results of some research by Sheffield Hallam University soon so I will cover that next month, fingers crossed.

The Village Voice has been dragged into the 21st century with a brand new Facebook Page! If you’re into FB then search for Village Voice, Tideswell and you’ll find it. Please Like Us!

Who knows there may be some young social media aware person out there who’d like to maintain it for us and keep the content fresh. Thanks to Gerard Rogers for setting this up.

Support Tideswell Singers

We are planning ‘Sing and Cycle’ to be a community event in summer 2012.

We would like people to be aware that it will be happening even at this early stage when the date has not yet been confirmed! A large project like this will benefit from financial support so we would like to invite as many people as possible to vote for us in the hope of receiving funds from NatWest.

Please click on the link below to vote - you will need to go through a simple procedure to register. You can find more information by clicking the tabs on the website.

It would be great if you could then forward this email to other people who you think would be willing to support us.

At’Flicks

The actress Kristin Scott Thomas is probably known to most of us, and she is superb in

this French film “I’ve loved you so long”. Her performance won her the European Film Award for Best European Actress, and the film won the BAFTA for Best Film not in the English Language.

It will be shown at 7.30pm on Thursday 24th November, upstairs in The George. It is a compassionate and sensitive film, focussing on the relationship between two sisters who have been apart for fifteen years, with their lives taking very different paths. The two women gradually rediscover common ground and learn how to relate to one another through the memories of shared childhood. The reason for their separation broods over the film, gradually to be revealed. A film with subtitles, it is highly acclaimed and highly recommended.

Membership for the full season of films till next April is still available at £25. Guest membership, at £4.75 per film, is also available, as is the offer of 20% off a meal at The George for film goers on the night. If you would like any further information, please contact Margaret Filer on 871681.

being held at the George Inn, TIDESWELL, 7.0pm Monday 7th November. The President of Diabetes Uk, Richard Lane will present the Nabarro medal to group member John Moss who has been on insulin injections for over 50years. there will be entertainment and a fine buffet, as well as information literature on the night. many of the young members “the Pen People “ will be enjoying the celebrations. they will also be making arrangements for the annual trip to the Pantomime at Buxton Opera House. If you wish to attend, or find out more about the group, please phone Sue Barber on 871644

Buxton Soroptimists

A recent meeting of the Buxton Soroptimists discussed the

Sorptimists’ Diamond Education Grant charity. Grants are given to women to further their education, which in turn helps them in their communities and within their families. Around a thousand enquiries are received each year, 700 of which will qualify for application forms and of those around 150 each year are given grants.

The fund trustees would like to help more women, but the funds are limited. Last year £8,000 was distributed. Grants covered a wide range of needs. A widowed mother who worked as a midwife sustained an injury and was helped with a grant to change career. Women victims of domestic violence, those who were bereaved or in other difficulties were helped. Their educational courses varied from NEBOSH, to nail technology and from handcrafted

furniture making, to motor cycle maintenance. For some, the purchase of a laptop or camera was all that was needed to help them progress.

Diana Randall, the guest speaker who works with the charity, spoke enthusiastically about the ability to change a woman’s life for the better, often by simple means, She said that the committee heard some sad tales, but the outcomes were normally very good.

Dog Bin ResponseFollowing the report in “The Village Voice” regarding the emptying of dog waste bins.

This is a reply Ken Yates received from DDDC.

Dear Sir……. Somehow the information that you have received has been distorted. The Derbyshire Dales District Council will continue to empty and cleanse all the dog fouling bins that are installed within our area, including all those in Tideswell.

The confusion may have arisen with the fact that we are not installing any new dog waste bins or litter bins. This is primarily because of continuous and ongoing increased costs, allied to the reduction in resource and central government imposed cut backs.

Tidsa Wakes AGM

Tideswell Wakes held its AGM on the 11th October 2011 in the vestry at Fountain

Square church. Two members of the public were present.

The chair reported that although the street collection was down on last year, finances had just about broke even. A fantastic effort from all the volunteers who helped out with the road closures on carnival day, without these volunteers the carnival would not be able to take place. The help from parents of the girls who had volunteered to be royalty was also greatly appreciated.

Two requests for donations had been received and it was proposed to give each £50. Santa tickets will be on sale from the 1st Dec from Tideswell Stores.

The committee remains unchanged with Philip Swarbrick as Chair, Julie Walton as Vice Chair, Marie McGuinness as Treasurer, Kath Lees as Secretary and the addition of Anne and Patricia Smith who volunteered to take on the position of Queens Secretary. Brian Woodall, Gwen McGuinness and Paul Flint remain members of the committee. John Firth has stood down from the committee but will still help with any artwork for the programme.

Prevent Domestic Abuse

A campaign has been launched by police in the Derbyshire Dales to raise awareness and help prevent domestic abuse in the run up to Christmas.

Operation Angel will run from October to December to tie in with a seasonal peak in reports around Christmas and the New Year.

The initiative will raise awareness of the help and support services on offer in the area and encourage people not to suffer domestic abuse in silence.

‘Stop Hurting, Start Talking’ posters, leaflets and stickers are being displayed in doctors surgeries, hospitals and pubs in the area to encourage victims to speak out about abuse.

Support information from North Derbyshire Women’s Aid and Derbyshire Support and Advice for Men (DSAM) will be provided to victims and Derbyshire Alcohol Advice Service have provided information packs to people in cases where excessive drinking may have been a factor.

Anyone who is suffering domestic abuse or violence, or has any information about incidents, should contact Derbyshire police on 0345 123 33 33.

Away in a Manger

A few years ago the Lowry Art Gallery in Salford hosted an exhibition of

Polish Christmas Cribs. The structures varied in height between ten centimetres and three metres. All were built from household scrap materials.

Known as Szopka (pronounced Shop-ka) the dazzlingly colourful nativity scenes were shipped over from Cracow where they had been made as part of traditional preparations for a Polish Christmas. Unlike our own Christmas Cribs, the Polish models are based upon the local architecture and all conform to a strict plan. On the ground floor are depictions of local life – characters from folk tales – perhaps local heroes or historical champions. Above them is a scene of Bethlehem together with the Holy Family and visitors to the stable.

The first Szopka were built as miniature portable theatres and the characters were operated by a child, standing inside the crib. Today the figures are operated mechanically and the Szopkas are illuminated with the help of batteries. Since the end of the second world war, the Cracow authorities have supported this ancient tradition by holding an annual competition in December. It is then that the townspeople bring hundreds of Szopka to the main square to have them judged. The best ones are displayed in Cracow’s museum.

Here in Tideswell, the Artability Group has been busy making their own Szopka and the resulting cribs are to be placed in our Parish Church from the first week in December. We hope that you will all

be able to come and see these delightful examples of folk art.

John Firth

Tidsa RamblersThis month’s walk is on Sunday 20th. Please meet at the later time of 11 am at Cherry Tree Square. The walk will be from Chatsworth. There’s also a get-together in The George on Wednesday 16th at 7.30 pm for anyone interested in talking about future plans for the group.

A car park situated at the top of the hill is always a bonus and meant that excellent views were almost immediate as we set off last month along White Edge. None of us had known that deer were in this area until meeting people with binoculars who had come specifically watch them. The highlight of our day was seeing the stags and hearing their cries, leaving us in no doubt that it was the rutting season. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and the lone walker in the village whom we’d failed to persuade to join us, doesn’t know what he missed.

On December 11th the group plan to walk from Tideswell to a venue for Sunday lunch. The intention is to make the return journey!

On the Beat

The theft of lead continues to be a problem. Churches in Bakewell Police area have

been heavily targeted, for example Chelmorton, Taddington and Hathersage. Church thefts have also occurred from Stoney Middleton and Baslow. We are currently in the process of setting up a scheme called Church Watch; this will work in a similar way to Neighbourhood Watch. A sign will be displayed outside the church as a visible deterrent, the lead can be treated with a traceable substance, making it difficult to sell, most importantly is the vigilance of people living near churches reporting any suspicious activity. All residents are given the opportunity to sign up to ringmaster enabling them to receive messages regarding criminal activity as well as incidents involving churches.

We also run an operation which involves working alongside scrap metal business owners, people selling scrap to these businesses will now need a valid ID, will have their details checked and recorded and the scrap will be checked for traceable markings, thus making it more difficult to sell.

Seatbelts: The law requires you to wear a seatbelt and for a child to be carried in a child restraint appropriate for their age and size. In most cases it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure seatbelts are worn. As part of Operation Safe Drive, police patrols will be making sure drivers adhere to the law concerning the use of seatbelts alongside the use of mobile phones. Leaflets regarding the Seatbelt Campaign have been distributed to schools and are available from Bakewell Police Station. Seatbelt wearing saves many lives every year.

Community Speed Watch in TideswellSpeeding in Tideswell is causing concern for residents. Community Speed watch will be running in the area in the near future, this has been a successful deterrent in other areas and is run with the help of volunteers, if this is something you would like to get involved with

or would like more information with please contact PC Phil Maycock 0345 123 33 33

Halloween is nearly upon us and while many enjoy this night there are others who prefer not to celebrate. Our patrols will be increased on this night and in addition we will be delivering leaflets to shops and post offices which you can collect and display in your window or on your door, the message is clear ‘Sorry no trick or treat’. If you are aware of any elderly or frail neighbours would you please make them aware or collect a leaflet on their behalf.

Bonfire NightExtra patrols will be out on bonfire night to suppress any anti social behaviour. We will request shops selling fireworks to display posters reminding purchasers of using fireworks responsibly and the sale and use of fireworks within the law. Please make sure your children are aware of the firework code and keep your pets safe.

Retirement of PC Kevin LoweAfter 40 years & 6 months of Police Service, PC Lowe will retire October 31st. PC Lowe is a well known and much respected police officer who has laid the foundations for many initiatives which we hope will continue to run and develop. PC Phil Maycock, who is a very experienced police officer will be taking over from Kevin in Tideswell, assisted by PCSO Jonathan Taylor and PCSO Phil Briggs. PC Maycock is looking forward to the challenge of his new role.

Tideswell Community PlayersSeasonal Comedy in Tideswell Church

This month Tideswell Community Players perform The Flint Street Nativity, a comedy by Tim Firth, the acclaimed writer of Calendar Girls and Preston Front.

Performed in Tideswell Church, the traditional Christmas Nativity play is seen through the eyes of the 8 year-old cast from Mrs Horrocks’ class (all played by adults) watched by their proud, and not so proud, parents. As the childrens’ performance unfolds, the hilarious but sharply-observed dialogue shows how the children unconsciously copy the backbiting, jealousies and prejudices they have witnessed at home. The anxieties and rivalries of the unfortunate young cast are played out against the backing of their versions of some familiar carols.

Directed by Tony Preston, the play has a big cast which includes some familiar faces and several new to the stage in the village. It makes full use of the stunning setting of Tideswell’s Parish Church and is a comedy for the winter season which should not be missed. Brighten up your dark nights and make sure you get your ticket soon! Adults and children of all ages very welcome, though some of the “playground language” may be unsuitable for under-tens!

Tideswell Parish Church 7:30pm, 23 to 25 November. Tickets from Tideswell Post Office and Litton Stores at £7 and £5 (concessions). Bookings and more information from [email protected], 01298 871063, or on the door. More information about this and other plays and music coming to the village from Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter.

Kitchen Assistants

The Tideswell School of Food is looking for a Cleaner/Kitchen Assistant

The role of Cleaner is pretty self-explanatory! It is also one of the most important jobs at the school as a clean environment is absolutely critical.

The role of a Kitchen Assistant is two-fold. You have to support the chef by weighing out ingredients, ensuring that each work station is set for the course participants and getting items that are required. You also need to make sure that everyone has a good time by taking away dirty utensils and providing clean ones, offering a glass of water or some words of encouragement, and keeping an eye on things to ensure the kitchen works smoothly.

If you care about people and want a rewarding and fulfilling role, why not join our team? Hours are variable, but some evening and weekend work will be required. An interest in cooking would be useful, but a willingness to learn and be part of a team is more important.

We offer £7.00 per hour and an enjoyable and supportive working environment.

Pop in for a job description, or call us on 01298 871262 for more information.

Specials on parade

A group of 13 students have successfully passed their training to become

special constables and will now help to police Derbyshire’s streets from Swadlincote in the south to Glossop in the north.

Special constables are volunteer officers who have the same powers as a regular officer and undertake a variety of

tasks such as town centre patrols and neighbourhood policing.

On Monday evening (September 26 2011) the students took their oath to become special constables. The Attestation Ceremony marked the end of a rigorous selection process followed by two months intensive study.

Assistant Chief Constable Dee Collins said: “The role of a special constable provides fantastic experience. They will get a taste of what it is like to work in the police force and develop the skills needed to deal with a diverse range of people and situations.”

Derbyshire Constabulary is actively recruiting for new people to join the Special Constabulary. More information can be found by visiting the Derbyshire Constabulary website www.derbyshire.police.uk, calling 0300 330 1330 or emailing [email protected].

Parish Council Matters

At the October meeting the Parish Council said Farewell to PC Kevin

Lowe. Chairman Phil Swarbrick thanked him for his work in Tideswell. His replacement will be PC Phil Maycock, who already covers a wide area of the Derbyshire Dales and will add Tideswell to his list. He was welcomed by members.

The Youth Steering Group applied for a grant, and have been requested to send in a copy of their accounts, in line with other organisations.

The Christmas tree lights will be erected on November 26th at 9.30 am in the Fountain Square. The discussions between the Parish Council and the Derbyshire

Dales District Council regarding the public toilets continue. Other matters previously discussed in the Village Voice are also ongoing. A query had been raised about the payment made earlier in the year to the “Clock winder” . This was made as a payment for the winding of the clock at Millers Dale. The Parish Church Clock does not need to be wound by hand, and no payment has been made for the church clock in Tideswell.

The council will update residents on a variety of ongoing matters in the next edition of Village Voice.

Willow and Leather News25 Sep – Youlgreave 139, TCC 120

So late in the summer, this match had to start at 1 p.m., in cold and light rain,

which got heavier. At 2.30 play was halted, and as the tea had been prepared and no more play seemed likely, it was taken anyway. Tough on those who’d managed a Sunday lunch beforehand.

After tea, the rain had eased and play was resumed. Then the sun came out and the match ended in the most glorious evening light. A typical English summer’s day.

Youlgreave batted first and were greatly indebted to the hefty McMahon, whose 44 included several clubbed sixes. Once he had gone, as one of Ken Coker’s four catches behind the stumps, the Youlgreave innings succumbed quite quickly to the bowling of Andy Stelling (4-21) and Dan Shirt (3-29).

Tideswell’s reply owed everything to our Disley recruit Chris Pashley, who opened but was eighth man out for 66. With eight overs left, only 32 were required. Despite the best efforts of the tail, though, Youlgreave came out on top to complete the double over Tideswell in 2011.

With thanks to our match ball sponsors:
