The History ofVeterans Day
President Woodrow Wilsonproclaimed the first anniversaryof the official end of World WarI (on Nov. 11, 1919) asArmistice Day. The day’simportance grew when, in 1921,Congress approved theestablishment of a Tomb of theUnknown Soldier in ArlingtonNational Cemetery. A ceremonyfor the event took place onNov. 11, and Congress declaredthat 1921 day to be a federalholiday in honor of those whoparticipated in the war. ButArmistice Day wasn’t yet anannual occurrence at that time.
It wasn’t until 1938 thatCongress passed legislationmaking the date an annual, legal, federal holiday. Then, in1954, President DwightEisenhower signed legislationchanging the name fromArmistice Day to Veterans Day.The holiday changed again in1968 when Congress passed theMonday Holiday Law, whichestablished the fourth Mondayin October as the new date forthe observance of Veterans Day.
Change didn’t stop there. In1975, legislation was passed toreturn the federal observance ofVeterans Day to Nov. 11 becauseof popular sentiment; since thechange to the fourth Monday inOctober, most states—46—hadcontinued to commemorate theevent on Nov. 11. Thus, in 1978,Veterans Day observancereverted to Nov. 11 once again.
