I started out 5 October attending the AZ QCWA meeting and speaking to them about the growth of Amateur Radio in the United States and Arizona. The Amateurs in attendance were very warm and polite, the lunch was superb. As I listen to some of them talking about their experiences in Amateur radio a thought jumped into my head someone needs to record these conversations. There was a lot of history and experience concerning Amateur Radio being talked about there . On 12 October I attended the Mohave Hamfest put on in Centennial Park in Kingman Arizona. This park is a multi use facility and it was very nice to see a ham fest on one side while softball, soccer and other sporting events were going on as the hamfest was happening. So these people would wonder through the ham fest both coming and going to their event and asked questions about what was going on and learning about Amateur Radio. I would like to thank Bill Smith KD7MIA and his support staff for putting on this event. It was a very well put on and very enjoyable to attend. Good Conversation items bought and sold and acquaintances renewed. For those who don't subscribe to the ARRL mailing list, they have a very nice ARRL 100 year's Centennial certificate suitable for framing. You must be an ARRL member to access the PDF file. If you print it out on photo paper it looks really good. It will already have your name and call letters on the certificate. VANITY CALL SIGN FEE; The new FCC regulatory fee of $16.10 to apply for an Amateur Radio vanity call sign went into effect Friday, August 23, when the new regulatory fee schedule appeared in the Federal Register. Earlier this year the FCC had proposed upping the vanity call sign fee from its current $15 to $15.20, but in the Report and Order in MD Docket 13-140, released August 12, the Commission offered no explanation for the higher fee. In another change, starting in FY 2014, the FCC will require that all regulatory fee payments be made electronically. November News Letter Well as things go the best laid plans of men and boys. November turned into a month of too much activities in this Section Managers House. The November News Letter was just about finished on October 29. On October 31 after 2 days in the hospital under emergency care my Daughter-in-law delivered a 10 pound 12 ounce baby girl. The baby was quickly whisked off to the NICU Unit after 10 to 12 days I do not remember trying to keep up with the other two grandchildren and getting the new parents what they needed. The baby was released to go home. So 2 birthdays were missed and made up. The news letter never made it out. So you have a combined November / December letter.

November News Letter

Well as things go the best laid plans of men and boys. November Had only one Tucson Hamfest 2013 - November 9 2013 held at the Marana Middle School. This was a very good hamfest and if you were unable to attend you missed out for there was equipment there from old to modern. They had seminars and I for one had a very good time.

I do not like to report accidents but the Yuma area had one that could of been avoided. 2 men with the Yuma County Sherriff's Office Search and Rescue unit, they were not on duty and not Amateurs Radio operators, sustained electric shock while attempting to set up a portable tower and antenna in the very early morning,

for an event. It was dark the structure hit power lines. both men survived. One was taken to the hospital the other went there on his own after many, many urgings to do so. After years of being a range master for the NRA, the Boy Scouts and Safety person. I have looked at many studies that show how accidents like this one happen it is because at least 3 safety measures or more were broken or just ignored. Just be safe your life is important to someone.

The holiday season is upon us and everyone is out about going from here to there and I myself enjoy the season. I just want to take a minute and remind everyone to be safe out there. Take your time and enjoy your family and friends. Be safe if you are working on amateur radio projects such as antennas towers or equipment take that extra second to look around and look up. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New year.

Assistant Section Managers As I promised here is another Assistant Section Manager Carl Foster KB7AZ. The rotator is an AlfaSpid RAK-1. He usually keep the antenna at 36 feet, but run it all the way up for contests. The 40-meter dipole is in the back yard. SCOUTING AND YOUTH IN AMATEUR RADIO A couple of Boy Scouts/hams have built every project from the first two books by Alfred Morgan called "Boys first and second book of radio and electronics". They would like to work on the third book. These popular books were once found in almost every library across the country. I loaned my set to someone a few years ago. I have been searching used book stores to replace my copies. I have found all but the third book. If someone has the third book, please contact me. Thanks Tom K7DF
