MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Gerry Massey
Nobles and Ladies, last month, I asked you to think about what you have done for the Shrine and what kind of legacy
you will leave. This month, I would like to ask you to think about what the Shrine means to you and what the Shrine has done for you. Some of us have had to deal with the loss of a loved one, or a fire, some have had to deal with health concerns. Some of us learn lessons of life and how to run a meeting or public speaking or how to manage an event or project. The Shrine gives each of us something different at various times in our life. But no matter what
we get from the Shrine, we always seem to pull together like a family. If you are anything like I am, you probably have memberships in
other organizations besides the Shrine (American Legion, VFW, Elks, Moose, etc). I also know this time a year can be a strain on paying all those dues. But I ask you to think about two things. First, realize with the Shrine, you are not just a member… You’re an OWNER. We OWN 22 of the best Hospitals for Children in the world. We OWN our
Shrine and we OWN our legacy and destiny. Second, think about what you get out of your membership, besides the previously
mentioned items. After attending the Membership Seminar in Tampa a few weeks ago, I learned the Membership Team at Shriners International are working on a huge project that will bring you a new type of membership card that will get you discounts at major chains across the country for various goods and services. The goal is to get us, the Owners of Shriners International, significant discounts in everyday places so that our membership will pay for itself. Ownership does come with responsibility. We need to lead by
example. We need you to OWN your piece. We need to pay our dues and from time to time, step up into a leadership position or role. Please, lead by example, step up in your units or clubs into those leadership positions and take an active role. You will get back far more than you put in, I assure you. Finally, Shriners International Membership Team is also working on a
new Membership database. It is called Web-Fez and should be rolling out in the Spring. I bring this up because our Recorder and the ladies in the office will be asking us to update some of our info soon. Any program or database is only as good as the info we put into it. One of the advances to this system is that the Noble can access parts of the system and make some demographic changes to their own file, on their own. There will even be a link to pay your dues right there on the site. This new system will be more user-friendly and more accurate.I am an Owner, Gerry

It is that time of year to review the process for getting a child into the Shriners Hospitals for Children system. Remember the four major areas that our hospitals treat are orthopaedics, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate, and bums. If you encounter a child that might benefit from our services, all you have to do is refer them to one of our hospitals. The referral process is all done over the phone, so just give the family the referral phone numbers to either our LA Hospital or our Salt Lake Hospital and they will take it from there.
The referral numbers you should provide them to families, are as follows: LA Hospital- 888-486-5437 | Salt Lake Hospital- 800-313-3745 If a family wants to learn more about our hospitals, refer them to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children website - www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.You can also give them the phone number to the El Zaribah Shrine Hospital Office (602-231-
0188) and we can also provide assistance and answer any questions they might have. Let’s try to help as many children as possible. Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman

The Shriner’s of El Zaribah were at it again, rocking and soaring with the Eagles and Cheap Trick this time. The call went out again and 50 of our Nobles and their families
answered the call to help raise money for our Fraternal Organization mission. This concert we sold Eagle’s Greatest Hits from 1971 to ‘75 cd’s prior to the Eagles performance and a chance to win a guitar autographed by all the original members of the Eagles prior to the start of their concert. That cd
was the 2nd highest selling, only behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. The Nobles arrived at Jobing.com arena as Ill Sir Ed and I checked
them off our list to begin our fund raiser for the evening. Jodi Carlson,

Arabian TalesVolume 32 – Issue #8the promoter, gave us the briefing on how the evening would go. Jodi
informed us that the Eagles tour has donated over $500,000 to our 22 Shriner hospital already this year. All the volunteers were so eager to get started when they heard this information. Teresa (my Lady) and Cheryl (Ill Sir Ed’s lady) handed out the cases and 2 by 2 they went out to sell the cd’s in the arena. Team by team, they started to come back for more cd’s when the concert-goer’s heard the money was going
to the Shriners. Ed and I went onto the floor and sold, as the others covered selling at the doors. Randy and Chris got up on stage during the announcements. And when it was all said and done, our nobles had sold 789 cd’s in an hour and half. This generated over $15,780 in sales. Which net a donation of a total of $5600 in donations to our Shriner Hospital of Southern Calf (L.A Hospital).
Special thanks to the following Nobles, their ladies, and family members for volunteering their time to help us raise money for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children: Keith and Teresa Seplak (co-chair), Ed and Cheryl Stolze (co-chair), Chris Hagenian, Mary Bystricky, Randy and Cindy Peters, JC Reece and Melissa, Tiffany and Lexi Hardiman, Dana and Katrina Dobson, Jim Reid and Andie Lacomb, Guy Williams and Denise Lavoie, Roger and Mary Hall, Lou and Lynn Pinnich, Duane and Rita Camp, Jim and Sharon Harrison, James and Denise Jennings, Milan Carnes and Bud Voler, Mary Edwards (Kesselring) and Chris, Lyman and Lynn Hatch, Russ and Barb Gunther, Jim and Brenda Molder, Gina Baird, Ken Neusch, Ted Brownell, Doc Hayes, Mark and Cindy Lueck, Pete and Lou Spears, Jim and Kay Hoover, Matt and Michele Gale.

The California School Nurses Organization (CSNO) honored Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California
at its 64th annual conference that took place in Sacramento March 27-30. On Saturday, March 29, Mason Myers and Catherine Curran were presented with the 2014 Lyda Smiley Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the well-being of children and school nursing made by someone other than a school nurse. Myers, staff development manager at the Northern California Shriners Hospital, and Curran, communications director, worked together to organize a pre-conference seminar for school nurses at the hospital. The Northern California Shriners Hospital has worked in partnership with school nurses for many years. In accepting the award, Curran recognized that “all care begins in the community” and thanked the more than 400 nurses in attendance for ensuring that children and families are aware of the resources available to them, including Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Lyda Smiley was a California nurse who dedicated her career to school nursing and through her estate set up the Lyda Smiley award. Over the years, CSNO has honored physicians, superintendents, legislators and organizations for their outstanding contributions. The CSNO section that organizes the annual conference selects the Lyda Smiley award recipient each year.
Shriners Hospital for Children - Northern California is recognized as a leading provider of pediatric orthopaedic care and distinguished as the region’s most active and most noted pediatric burn center. From their world-class research team to their surgeons, nurses, and therapists, every member of their staff is focused on improving children’s quality of life.

Each year, a submission is made for a Dromedary Award for a Print Magazine award from Imperial. Each year, when the winners and honorable mentions are awarded, they give feedback as to how we can improve our magazine. We have already made some great strides with some of our changes. One additional area of needed improvement has to with the quality and subject of the images we choose to use. So, this is why we are bringing this series to you! We look forward to seeing the pictures you take and the memories you share!
So many times, we hear the words, “I wish they would have used my picture” or “Why didn’t my picture make it in the magazine” or even, “I’ve never even had my picture in the ‘Tales”. This can all easily be solved!
Here are some tips for taking GREAT pictures and how to share your picture with the rest of the El Zaribah Shrine Family!
DO:* Get close to your subects. Have your subject “fill” the space you are looking at!* SHARE YOUR PHOTOS with us ON FACEBOOK or TAG US on TWITTER or INSTAGRAM!

Out & About
This year, J C Reece and Randy Peters have been working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades.
We have made contact with all the parade Units and Clubs who occasionally have trouble getting members to attend parades. Because of attendance, many Units and Clubs have little cars that do not get driven. Members who could be marching or playing an instrument are instead driving a truck that pulls a trailer. In some instances, nobody has been there to handle the camels so they have had to stay home. These are a few examples of problems we have had.
We are now in contact with the parade groups to find out if they have cars that will not be driven, trucks that pull trailers that need a driver, help with camels, etc. Then, we contact the new Nobles.
We also ask all new Nobles to sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When they are available they need to contact the Oriental Guide or the High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club.
This has been working since the Tempe Veteran’s Day parade last November. We have had up to 6 empty parade positions in the past few months that we have filled with new Nobles.
It is working well. We not only help the Unit or Club get a full roster, but the new Nobles meet and get to know many of the Nobles in the Units and Clubs. This is not a recruiting tool, but a way for new Nobles to get an idea of what each group is about and help utilize our parade attractions.
If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (Oriental Guide) 602-531-6545 or Randy Peters (High Priest & Prophet) 480-296-3957 .

To the 2014 Shrine Clown line, you gentlemen have shown me and the Unit support and I couldn’t have picked a better group to work with. leaders of next year’s Clown Unit will need the same amount (if not more) support to continue the success for the Unit. See you in 2015,Bill “U-Hoo” EnloeClown President 2014 Culinary Unit
At the Cornfest we held our annual “election” of unit officers and all positions changed except mine. Our newly “elected” president is
Lenny Williams, Jim Harrison is our new vice president replacing Mike Fenno, and David Smith is our new treasurer. At the September stated meeting we had
a very good showing of servers, including our only junior member, Anthony, Bob Lute’s grandson. Anthony volunteers whenever Bob will let him. When he was missing from the serving line he was in the kitchen helping wash dishes. He just loves to help, whenever and wherever needed. What a Great Kid!We have practiced trying to keep all food
on the plates and most made it. Before we
even started serving at the Stated meeting for October, our fearless leader Hal spilled gravy on his shoe and in a joint operation between Mike and Lenny they managed to almost pour gravy on the floor while changing pans. That’s why we ask you to stay back; our semi-skilled servers can’t get insurance.Submitted in the faith,Ken Conner, your loyal Scribe Director’s Staff
We will again serve lunch for the Bikers Against Child Abuse at the Shine for their monthly meetings and all the proceeds will go to the Director’s Staff. We need volunteers
