The Diocese of Liverpool is one of 44 dioceses in this country that together form the body called the Church of England. The Church of England is led by the Archbishop of Canterbury and governed by an elected body, General Synod. Every parish, deanery and diocese is committed to the faith 'uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds,' its maintenance of the traditional three fold order of ministry, and its determination to bring the grace of God to the whole nation through word and sacrament in the power of the Holy Spirit.Through its network of dioceses and parishes the church aims to have a Christian presence in every community working towards its mission of social justice whilst sharing the Good News of Jesus. Some basic facts• The Queen is the Church of England's Supreme Governor, the Archbishop of Canterbury it's

I was accosted recently by a teenager enquiring whether I would help him and his friends to purchase some "ciggies" from the corner shop. I replied that I'd never smoked. "Why would you roll up a leaf, set it on fire, stick it in your mouth and willingly inhale the smoke?" The poor boy shuffled away before I could quote Romans 12 ("Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice"). It's wonderful to go into shops or even pubs nowadays and realize once again that the air is free from smoke. How things have changed since the 1960s when my dad had an ash tray with a picture of the church on it! That wouldn't really be acceptable as fund raising today. This November we look back 100 years to the Great War. One of the true legends of the war was a fellow nicknamed "Woodbine Willie" (Woodbines being a brand of cigarettes). Rev. Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy was a vicar who went off to the trenches of the front line as a Padre. He won a Military Cross for going into no-man's-land with a cigarette and a prayer for the injured of both sides. Unlike many of the men to whom he ministered, he died not on the killing fields of Belgium but after returning home - in fact, in Liverpool, after a sucessful career as an author. His experiences led him to Christian pacifism. Today he has a website, a book and a play being performed in his memory. It's strange to think that cigarettes were in themselves a ministry to people. Yet when faced with mustard gas, chlorine, the smell of gunfire, and the stench of the trenches themselves, then the aroma of a familiar cigarette must have been comforting. Our context today is so different. But I wonder if for us there's a different way of bringing God's love to people. Perhaps one that at first seems odd, but is nevertheless truly effective?
God bless, Michael Follin

HOST is looking for kind, friendly, hospitable people of all ages whose imaginations are caught by the idea of welcoming an international student at university here, far from his or her own family, to their home, for a day, a weekend or at Christmas. You don’t need to live near a university, as students will travel for the privilege of meeting you, learning about real life in this country, and sharing their own culture. HOST is a voluntary activity which makes ambassadors for international goodwill of us all. Please see www.hostuk.org or call HOST 020 7739 6292. Thank you Margaret Stevens - Publicity Officer HOST UK

Reality CheckWell our holidays are now a past memory albeit a warm one and reality is kicking in. We have many reality checks along the way and they are an integral part of our lives. There are loads of examples of reality checks; a good one is the trend nowadays towards more and more elaborate weddings. I’m of an age where the stag and hen nights were normally the night before the wedding and the wedding itself and the reception were somewhere local. Nowadays, hen and stag parties are held in another country, maybe in fancy dress. The venue for the wedding service could be anywhere in the country and not necessarily a place with any family connection. As long as the venue is glamorous and the groom can arrive by helicopter and the bride by horse drawn carriage, then everything should be ok. It seems as if the arrangements and the film star day are more important than the wedding itself. There was a time when you could get married and organise the wedding breakfast for 100 family guests for about £2000. In those days, alongside organising their wedding, the couple were saving up towards a deposit on a house. Now the couple save up and get family donations towards a fantastic fairy tale day and even more glamorous honeymoon at a phenomenal cost. But what happens the next day? After the glitz and glamour of the wedding day and honeymoon, the couple have still to find somewhere to live and start their new life together. It’s easy to imagine tensions building when you start married life in debt this way. Is this modern self-centred wedding planning a form of idolatry? See 1 John chapter 5, verse 21
“little children, keep yourselves from idols.”John ends his letter with the line above, catching us off guard. This is the summary verse of the entire book. When you give up idols, everything changes in your life: actions, attitudes, words, thoughts, and deeds. Our idols consist of metal, plastic, rubber, upholstery and glass. We call them cars. Some idols come in the form of flesh and blood. We call them relationships. Other idols can be the self-centred glamour and popularity of a glitzy film star wedding.God warned his people against idolatry in Exodus 20:3, “you shall have no other Gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in Heaven above, or that is in the Earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
How do I know if something is idolatrous?Ask yourself, “what do I love most?” Here is another question to ask, “what do I think about when my mind wanders?” If your thoughts move to your car, your business, your home, your investment, to your husband, wife, or child, To that which feeds lust or pride, worldliness or covetousness. The greatest idol is self. One author said, “we are trying to hold at bay the gnats of small sins while swallowing the camel of self.” The cult of our personality is alive and well with such phrases as self-help, self-image, and self-esteem. I think you can sum up 1 John with the last verse. When we stop idolizing ourselves we can love God, love others and peace will follow .

Rector’s Course 2015Following the popularity of the Rector’s Course in recent years we are pleased to be able to let everyone know that the theme next year will be Faith and Science. Rev’d Michael Follin will be leading the course which will stretch from January to Easter on Tuesday evening.Originally the course began for the congregation at St Andrew’s, but we are delighted that next year it will be very much a Team course, open to everyone. Look out for more details, but get Tuesday evenings in your diary.
Holy Week and EasterPlenty of advance notice here. The archdeacon of Warrington, the Ven. TIME TO FLYYou know how it is when you can see someone making mistakes in their lives and you know that they won’t listen if you point it out. So you are left to subtly introduce good advice into conversation in a ‘third person’ sort of way. So Jean and Sam (our new friends from dancing) were telling us how incapable their daughter, Rose is at bringing up new granddaughter, Jessica. “We’re stepping into the breach again to look after Jessica; that four times this week she’s slept over,” Rose and husband Geoff have very good jobs and are finding it stressful with a little baby in the house, “they can’t cope.”Jean and Sam are no spring chickens themselves, but feel that they are still better at looking after their granddaughter than Jessica’s mum and dad. This has been going on for three months now since the baby was born, and Jessica could be excused for not knowing which of these people looking after her, are her real mother and father. Geoff has still not changed a nappy and why should he when his in-laws are so good at it?Jean then went on to tell us that Rose and husband Geoff had been out shopping for toys for baby Jessica. “They’ve spent a fortune on stuff from ‘The Early Years’ shop and it’s absolute rubbish. I told them to take it all back and we would buy Jessica something appropriate for her age.”Now to the point! When we got married and started a family in ‘the olden days’, we were left to get on with it ourselves. Our parents kept in the background (no doubt watching and cringing). We made plenty of mistakes; our decorating and DIY was amateurish, we nearly stabbed baby with the nappy pin and cooking was basic to say the least. But we learned and made all those mistakes together as a couple and bonded as a result; and our kids survived somehow. Our Lord has given us this life with its many joys, sadness’s and challenges and we should thank him every day for it. There is enough to contend with in this one life without attempting to live another person’s life as well. It doesn’t work and it isn’t fair on anyone. As parents (and grandparents) we can play our part by staying in the background, offering support (only) when needed. But most of all we can pray! Pray for the strengthening of our children as they embark on marriage, for wisdom in bringing up their children and that they will prioritise their time wisely between work and home. Please pray for strong families. Alan Scales
Christian values in school As you may be aware, this year our school has been focussing on a different Christian value each half term. This school year has started with us looking at Trust and Truthfulness. The children have been thinking about this in Collective Worship, year group assemblies and PSHE lessons. Our newly appointed W.O.W (Words of Worship) group will once again be out and about in school spotting this value been put into action. After half term we will be thinking about ‘Hope’ and linking this to the Christmas story. If you feel you could share any stories from your own experience, which links to any of our values please let us know. The children love to have visitors in school! an elderly couple had just learned how to send text messages on their mobile phones. the wife was a romantic type and the husband was more of a no-nonsense guy.
one afternoon the wife went out to meet a friend for coffee. as she waited for her friend, she decided to send her husband a romantic text message and she wrote:
"if you are sleeping, send me your dreams. if you are laughing, send me your smile. if you are eating, send me a bite. if you are drinking, send me a sip. if you are crying, send me your tears. i love you." the husband texted back to her: "i'm on the toilet. Please advise."

Helen Evans – our new Reader
After two years’ training, we were delighted to see Helen Evans licensed as Reader at the Cathedral. At the service on the afternoon of 27th September we had Bishop Richard officiating and Bishop Cyril giving us a really funny and engaging talk. His charge to the Readers to be evangelists was very challenging! After the service, back at St Peter’s, there was a buffet and a Ceilidh with one of Helen’s sons, Owain, directing. Helen has worked hard in her studies leading up to the licensing, and will continue with these for a while yet. Helen works as a supply teacher, and

Helen often helps organize family/parade services at St Peter’s, and is one of the Kids For Christ team at Hudson School. A Most Precious GiftWhat has been the best present you have ever received, your most pre-cious gift? an 18th or 21st birthday gift, a special anniversary gift, retire-ment, something handmade by a child or grandchild?
For me it is the gift of life. Firstly god sent his only son to die for us so that we could have eternal life. What more precious gift could anyone be given than that?
secondly the gift of our two daughters after a long time, waiting, praying, hoping. two precious daughters a year apart, how wonderful!
how do you treat your precious gift? do you display it proudly, guard it fiercely, use it frequently, keep it safe and only bring it out for special occasions?
Jesus is a part of my daily life. Prayer, the bible and church fellowship are some of the ways i celebrate this most wonderful of gifts.our daughters are also obviously part of our daily lives. We protect, nurture, teach, laugh, cry, play, pray and most importantly, loVe them.
god loved us so much that he sent us his son to die for us. most par-ents cannot comprehend sacrificing their child for the world, I do not think i could.
i thank god daily for the three most precious gifts i have or ever will re-ceive, his son and my two wonderful daughters. What do you thank him for?

The Story of Abraham and Sarah
Once there was a man named Abram. One day the Lord came to talk to Abram, and Abram asked, "Who will have all my things when I die". God promised Abram and his wife Sarai that one day they would be parents, even though they were old and had no children.God wasn't sure that Abram understood. So that night He took him outside, and said, "Do you see all the stars that are in the sky"? When Abram looked up, the whole night sky was full of stars, so many in fact that he would never be able to count them. Then God said, "That is how many children you will have".Quite a few years later when Abram was ninety-nine years old (older than even your grandparents) the Lord decided to change Abram's name to Abraham, which means "father of many." He also changed Sarai's name to Sarah.God told them again that they would be parents and that they would have a boy. This time Abraham laughed so hard he fell on his face! It was hard to believe that he and Sarah would have a child in their old age.One day three visitors came to Abraham's house. He hurried to meet them. "May I get you something to eat and drink?" Abraham asked. "Please come in and join us, and have a rest on the couch."The visitors agreed, so Abraham brought them some fresh bread, milk. While the visitors were eating, they asked Abraham, "Where is your wife Sarah?" Abraham thought this was a little strange, but he replied, "She's in the other room".Then one of the men spoke and said, "I will come back to see you at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son."Now Sarah was listening behind the living room door. She started to laugh, but covered her mouth and laughed to herself because she didn't want to be heard. Then she said to herself, "How can I have a child, I'm almost one hundred years old?"Later when the visitors had left, Abraham and Sarah realized that the man who had told them this was indeed God.A year later Sarah did have a son. She and Abraham named him Isaac, which means "he laughs." They were very excited, and remembered to thank God for Isaac.
