C H A I R M A N C O L I N ’S L E T T E R

Hello Friends,

With the festive season now just around the corner, the year is drawing to a close; thanks to

all of you who helped to make it another successful year for ‘the region’. It was great to see

so many of you at the recent AGM and yet again the ‘Conningbrook’ put on an excellent buffet

for us. As is usually the case, the focus of the evening was the year gone by, with a number of

slideshows and stats’ galore from the various committee members.

After many years, we said farewell to Committee member George Fowler, but not goodbye as

he will continue as a regional member, no doubt bringing his V12 E-Type to events - providing

there is a filling station not too far away!

In his place, we welcome Steve Taylor as Web Master. Steve would appreciate your input to

the website, so whether it is pictures from a Club event you attended, an entry for the

‘member’s cars’ section, or anything else you think relevant, please email it to:

[email protected]

A week after the AGM the committee had its’ first meeting of the ‘new year’. Several new

events are now in the early stages of planning and a ‘club’ like ours thrives on new ideas, so if

you have one please don’t keep it under your hat, get in contact with one of the committee, as

we really do want to hear from you. (Remember that Club Night on January 10th 2017 is

‘Ideas Night’).

There is just one event left for this year - the ‘Christmas Dinner’. If you have not yet booked,

sadly you are too late as bookings are now closed, so to you I say “Merry Christmas - you don’t

know what you are missing”!

To those who are attending, Kerri and I look forward to seeing you there for a great evening.

We are both really looking forward to it; especially so, as it will be our first with live music.

Hopefully there will be plenty of room on the floor for dancing, as I think some of us might be

getting too old for dancing on the tables! (Editor’s note: speak for yourself Colin!!)

Seasons Greetings, Colin

The Committee were delighted to welcome 33 members to the 2015-16 AGM. We

were also able to recruit yet another new member on the night, so a warm wel-

come to Tony Sheldon - number 105!

Following Chairman Colin’s formal welcome, Event’s Manager Stuart King,

started the evening with his ‘slide-show’ and presentation of the Club’s events

and visits calendar; including some previously un-seen photos! Members have

attended an impressive 33 events, plus the E-Type 360 and the XJ40 30th birth-

day celebrations at Dunkeld. This total also includes ‘Kent South on Tour’ re-

ports submitted by members.

Special thanks go to the following members who volunteered to organise events

this year and not forgetting - their ever helpful team of ‘Marshals’:

Jacky Tillott (Christmas Dinner 2015)

Colin Field (‘Drive it Day’ at Hever Castle and The Springhouse Charity Classic);

David Lockwood (‘Motors at the Moat’ at Leeds Castle);

Martin Emmerson (Deal, Quex Park and Whitstable Car Shows)

Martin Emmerson (the Cotswold and Isle of Wight Tours)

Mick Tillott (‘Old Timers’ Classic Car Show)

Mark Prince and Jeff Bennett (Club Annual Quiz)

(All the other Club events/ visits were organised by members of the Committee).

Attendee numbers at monthly Cub Nights have been quite high this year, rang-

ing from 12 to a whopping 60 for the Jonathan Partridge talk, where JDC were

also invited. However, the average attendance stands at 26 members.

Treasurer Rory Semple presented the Club accounts , with detailed explanations.

The Club have a healthy £1458 as of 31.10.16 to carry forward to 2017.

Membership and Club Secretary Keith Edwards presented a fascinating slide

show, giving a range of ’membership’ statistics on numbers, car types and own-

ership etc. Current membership stands at 105.

Publicity Manager Lesley King gave a brief, but heart-felt ‘thankyou’ to members

and especially Martin Emmerson and husband Stuart, for their encouragement

and support during her inaugural year as editor of the Club Newsletter and JEC

magazine regional report.

Web Master George Fowler is retiring this year following many, many years of ster-

ling service to the Club web site and Committee, so introduced new recruit Steve

Taylor. Chairman Colin also formally presented George with a very smart Jaguar

umbrella and a key ring, as small tokens of the Club’s appreciation.

The formal business ended around 9:30pm when a delicious finger buffet was

served, to set everyone-up for the journey home.

Please note: copies of the formal minutes and accounts will be forwarded to all

members separately to this Newsletter.

The JEC Kent South Website Good day all,

While I was at the AGM a few questions were brought to me concerning our Region’s website.

These were probably fairly long-standing, so I thought a few words might help clear the items.

1st: Was there a sign in/password needed for the site?

The answer here is ‘NO’. The site is completely open to anyone wishing to see it.

It can be accessed directly by typing in www.kentsouthjec.org.uk. This goes into the address

space at the top of your browser.

The other route is via the national JEC website. There is a sign-in/password needed to get

on to this website, but if you just want to go to a region’s individual site you don’t need to

enter anything. The route here is www.jec.org.uk

When you are on the site home page, toward the top you will see ‘Regions’. Click on this

then choose the individual region’s site you would like to see. Our website link is then just

above the map.

2nd: What is the ‘Shout Box’ for?

This was open to all to make comments or announcements. However, the Region remains

liable for any comments made - including those from non-members. So, in the absence of

an independent ’monitor’, the Committee have decided that it should be removed. (Editor’s

note: the Club Facebook page remains open for such comments, as this is always monitored

by Facebook on our behalf).

3rd: A comment was made on the appearance of some of the photos in the ‘Members Cars’ pag-

es. I have started to resize those out of perspective.

4th: There was a comment on who visits the site.

All sorts of people visit the site, members and non-members. I won’t break down the catego-

ries here but since the ‘visitor count’ was started, about 4 years ago when George re-

designed the site, there have been 20,119 visits. There is a counter at the bottom of the

‘Home’ page.

Finally, a small word on the page buttons, ‘Home’, ‘Events’ etc. Some of these show drop-down

menus when you run the mouse over them. However, it is worth clicking on them as some also

have a page linked directly to the button e.g. the ‘Events’ button. The current year’s events list is

accessed by directly clicking on the button. There are also two buttons behind, that you will see if

you put the mouse arrow on to the button.

If there are any more questions or suggestions please let me know, my address is:

[email protected]. I have to say that I am also receptive to complaints!!

Road Tax changes to be implemented from April 2017

Further changes to road tax were announced as part of the 2015 Budget. These will come into ef-

fect from April 2017 and concern the amount of road tax you’ll pay on new cars after that date.

Unfortunately, only zero emission cars will remain exempt from that date. All other new cars will be

charged a varying amount for the first year, based on their CO2 emissions and then a flat rate of

£140 for each subsequent year.

Owners of more popular ‘family’ cars are likely to pay between £100 and £160 for the first year. At

the other end of the scale, cars emitting more than 255g/km of CO2 will have to pay a staggering

£2,000 to tax their cars in the first year!

This is a huge change from the current road tax structure, which has encouraged manufacturers to

build low emission vehicles. Drivers have been drawn to these vehicles by the road tax exemption

and 75% of new cars purchased in 2015 in the UK were expected to be road tax free. Something

George Osbourne described as an “unsustainable” trend.

Purchasers of more expensive cars will also be penalised, as those cars costing in excess of

£40,000 will be required to pay an extra £310 in tax for each of the first 5 years of ownership.

Current road tax bands won’t change for cars that are already registered, so the existing VED bands

will remain in place - meaning cars registered before April 2017 will continue to pay the current VED

rates even after the new VED bands come into force. Fortunately for owners, the existing rates for

CO2 bands are much more favourable to lower-polluting vehicles.

As the rule changes are designed to net the exchequer more cash from popular eco-friendly cars, it

stands to reason that these are the vehicles the new rules will hit hardest.

The 2017 changes will mean a car that is CO2 rated at 100g/km or lower – and thus free of road tax

for life under the current VED band system – will cost its owner £400 over three years, £680 over 5

years, or a whopping £1,380 over ten years.

If you can buy the same car before the April 1st deadline, you’d be mad not to!

Insurance scams: bogus ‘ghost’ policies are the fraudsters’ latest ruse.

Police are warning drivers to be wary of the latest fraud twists to hit the market. ‘Ghost’ brokers sell bo-gus insurance policies for typically 15% cheaper than the norm; often approaching motorists in shopping

centres, or advertising on Gumtree. They also set-up false addresses, so motorists living in high

premium areas are offered insurance as if they live in remote parts of the UK , such as northern Scotland! They will also alter a driver’s age and previous claims history, which don’t show up on the MID insurance industry database. ’Crash for cash’ is more well know; where criminals ‘stage’ accidents to claim on the insurance. There is also ‘flash for cash’, were criminals flash their lights to encourage a motorist to keep going, before ploughing into them. Similarly, ‘swoop and squat’ involves two cars, where the ‘swoop’ car cuts-up the ‘squat’ car which brakes heavily, causing the innocent driver behind to crash into the back of

it. The ‘squat’ car then drives off before any details are recorded.

XJ X350 SEMINAR Sunday 23rd April 2016

Having attended this excellent JEC Seminar - I have prepared a pack of detailed notes, including gen-eral information and an ‘advisory maintenance schedule’ for this car. However, much of this information would be relevant to any of our Jags, so please let me know, as I am happy to forward a copy to you.

I also have a CD, with all the over-heads from the presentation.

I have similar packs with CDs from previous JEC Seminars, on the AJ6, AJ16 and V12 Jaguar engines. Again, I am more than happy to forward copies to KS members.

I have thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend these JEC seminars, as the pace is fast and David Marks tries to get across as much information as he can in the time allotted - so you have to stay awake! Fellow attendees are all so enthusiastic; it is a pleasure to be involved.

This is how it manifests:

... I decided to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the hall table. I decide

to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the rub-

bish bin under the table, and notice that the bin is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the rubbish first. But then I think, since I'm going to

be near the post box when I take out the rubbish anyway, I may as well pay the bills at the same time.

I take my cheque book off the table, and see that there is only one cheque left. My extra cheques are in my

desk in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the bottle of coke that I had been drinking.

I'm going to look for my cheques, but first I need to push the coke aside, so that I don't accidentally knock it

over. I see that the coke is getting warm and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the coke, a pot plant on the counter catches my eye - it needs to be watered.

I set the coke down on the counter and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I'd better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the plant. I set the glasses back down

on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen

table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remem-

ber that it's on the kitchen table; so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs; but first I'll water the

plant.

I attempt to splash some water in the plant pot, but I miss and most of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some paper towels and wipe up the spill.

Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, the rubbish has not been taken out, there is a warm bottle of coke

sitting on the counter, the plant isn't watered, there is still only one cheque in my cheque book, I can't find the

remote, I can't find my glasses and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled, because I know I was busy all day

long and I'm really tired. I realise this is a serious problem and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check

my e-mail and Facebook for messages.

KENT SOUTH EVENTS UP-DATE

Proposed Visit to the Haynes Motor Museum during October 2017

Looking much further ahead, Bob Foxcroft has visited the Haynes Motor Museum down in the West Country and was so impressed that he has kindly volunteered to arrange a group visit for us. You may recognise the name Haynes from those manuals that we so love. As it would involve a longer journey Bob has suggested the follow-ing:

"The suggestion would be to meet at Clackets Lane on the Saturday morning and drive to Sparkford (around 180 miles) in 3-4 hours. Have lunch at and visit the Museum in the afternoon. Stopover at a local pub/hotel or The ‘Walnut Tree’ if fancied, where a double room with full English for two would be around £80 and we could have an evening meal for £15/£20 a head – say £110/120 per couple plus drinks.

On Sunday a visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in the morning, or there are other interesting venues such as Wookey Hole, Yeovil and Taunton and also the West Somerset Railway, a little further afield.

There must be several other options, followed by a drive back on Sunday afternoon/evening.

If here is any interest, then I would be prepared to organise/make arrangements for up to 10 cars/couples - around mid-October."

If you would like to express an interest please let me know. Stuart King

Are ‘winter’ tyres worth it?

Probably YES - as these tyres give significantly

more traction on snow and ice, but also every

tyres will cut your winter braking distances.

making it the fastest car in the world.

The XK120’s cramped cockpit doesn’t suit very tall drivers, but those that fit will
