For years, women have been using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to help manage the symptoms they

experience from fluctuating hormone levels associated with peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause. With

the popularity of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) on the rise, many women have been asking me

what the difference is between traditional HRT and BHRT. The first thing I tell them about is pregnant horse urine.

Traditional HRT from the big pharmaceutical companies uses synthetic hormones derived from

pregnant horse urine, hormones that do not look like the hormones your body makes naturally. Bio-

identical hormones are made from soybeans and wild yams, which contain unique compounds that

are processed chemically and made into identical replicas of the hormones your body produces.

Hormones that match exactly what your body naturally produces can not be patented, which may be

one reason the big pharmaceutical companies don’t make them.

Another big difference between traditional HRT and BHRT is the dosing. Pharmaceutical companies make synthetic hormones

in specific strengths. Any woman who is prescribed HRT must be given one of those strengths, regardless of what her specific

need is. It’s like a “one-size-fits-all” solution. BHRT, on the other hand, is custom designed to fit each patient’s unique needs.

Based on your symptoms and a saliva test, we can identify which hormones you are deficient in and what strengths you need. A

custom solution designed specifically for your body can then be created in a compounding lab. And to take that customization a

step further, BHRT can be compounded in several formats.

Most synthetic hormones are administered orally, requiring a pill to sit in the liver until it is processed. However, non-oral routes

In case you missed my brain health seminar last

Molluscum Contagiosum Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin infection that is caused by a virus that results

in benign raised lesions, or bumps, on the skin. The lesions are...

Small, shiny, and smooth

Flesh-colored, white, or pink

Firm, dome shaped with a dimple or dent in the middle

Filled with waxy material

Typically between the size of a pin head and an eraser on a pencil

Anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands or bottom of the feet

Usually Molluscum Contagiosum lesions are painless and will disappear on their own if left untreated. Unfortunately, it can

take from two months to four years for the virus to run its course. Molluscum Contagiosum is spread through direct contact

with someone who has it or through contact with an object that has been contaminated with the virus (i.e. clothing, towels,

etc.). This skin infection is most common in children and sexually active adults.

Traditional treatment methods include cryotherapy (using liquid nitrogen to freeze each bump), laser therapy, or using a small

tool to pierce the bump and scrape it off the skin. However, these treatment methods can be painful, sometimes cause scarring,

and may require multiple sessions depending on the number of lesions.

We have recently read a case report about a 16-year-old girl with approximately 75 lesions on her inner thighs. She tried over-

the-counter antibiotic ointment and topical steroids for several weeks without improvement and was concerned at the rate at

which the lesions were spreading, along with social implications.

The patient was then prescribed a compounded topical solution of 1% povidone-iodine (PVP-I) in a dimethylsulfoxide

(DMSO) vehicle. The solution was applied twice daily. At the three-week follow-up visit, approximately half of the lesions

had resolved and no new lesions had appeared. By the six-week check-up there was complete resolution.
