It was a good farm, but after many years he grew tired of it and wanted something better. When it came time to sell it the real estate agent called the farmer and told him what he was going to put in the paper. And of course the real estate agent listed all the farms advantages: ideal location, modern equipment, healthy stock, acres of fertile ground, etc. But when the real estate agent finished explaining this to the farmer, the man cried out, “Hold everything! I’ve changed my mind. I’m not going to sell. I’ve been looking for a place like that all my life!” I’m thankful for the season of Thanksgiving because it’s an intentional reminder of all the incredible blessings that we have. The season forces us to stop and take a look at all that the Lord has given us. It’s easy to forget. It’s easier to think about all that you don’t have and would like to have. It’s easy to take for granted the current blessings that are already in our life. We need this season. Going around the table on Thanksgiving with your family and friends and mentioning one thing that you are thankful for won’t begin to cover all the blessings of God in your life. We could fill note- books if we tried to write down all the material and spiritual blessings that the Lord has given us. But God’s command “Give thanks to the Lord” isn’t fulfilled through your ability to mention all of God’s blessings in your life. It’s rather fulfilled through Christ, who never struggled with envy, like we do, who never struggled with discontent- ment, like we do, who was never interested in anything the world offered, like we are. That is where our thanksgiving begins this year: with Christ. He is the beginning and source of all our blessings. Lancer/Sabre Band Concert Saturday, November 4, 2017 10:15 am at Luther High School. “Return to Grace.” Sunday, November 5, 2017 2:00 p.m. There will be a devotion led by Pastor Hefti, followed by the movie. After the movie, Professor Korthals and Pastor Hefti will be available for Q & A opportunity. Martin Luther triggered a seismic upheaval that rocked the western world in the 1500s—with an impact that continues to reverberate to this day. This film tells the great adventure story of his life. At the same time, it examines his quest for truth—questions we all must face—including “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?” The Choral Festival Fri. Nov 10, 2017 7:00 pm - Sun. Nov 12, 2017 2:00 pm., 50 years ago choirs from six WELS high schools and two WELS preparatory schools gathered in the gymnasium of Luther High School for the first ever Choral Festival. They worked together under the baton of guest conductor and clinician Prof. Martin Albrecht from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. The goals of the Festival included acquainting students with varying styles of music and directors, providing an opportunity for good Christian Fellowship, developing their vocal skills and talents to a greater extent, and giving singers an opportunity for an even more rewarding relationship with their Savior through His gift of music. It was hoped by the founding directors of the Choral Festival that it would continue as an annual event. The Lord has blessed that original vision, and the Choral Festival has been held every year after that. Exactly 50 years later to the day, over 500 students from all across the country will be gathering once again for Choral Festival. On November 10th, rehearsals will begin at the La Crosse Center, leading up to the Pops Concert that evening at 7:00. The Pops Concert gives each group a chance to showcase their unique musical talents. Saturday will be spent rehearsing and preparing for the Sacred Concert, which will be held at the La Crosse Center on Sunday, November 12th at 2:00 p.m. No tickets are needed; freewill offering will be taken at both concerts. The Sacred Concert will be led by Clinicians Sarah Henrich, Dan Larson, and James Grasby. All three are Luther alumni, and are well prepared to lead the students through a weekend of fun, fellowship, musical excellence and most importantly, spiritual growth. The concert will feature sacred music from each of the past five decades, and two original compositions written in the past year. The Choral Festival only comes to La Crosse once every 15 years, so please plan to attend these two exciting concerts. If you are interested in volunteering for Choral Festival or would be willing to host a group of students for the weekend, please contact Paul Adickes at [email protected] Veterans Day Service Please join us in the Luther High School Chapel Auditorium for a Veterans Day Service on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 9:45 a.m. We will honor the veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States of America giving thanks to God for their service to our Lord and to our country.

School News

The Privilege of Prayer My wife and I were watching a television program recently and a desper-ate character said a prayer. His prayer began with words something like this: “I know I don’t pray very often, but I really need your help. If you re-ally exist…” This kind of prayer by a similar character shows up in many movies and TV programs. How do you react? What do you think of a prayer like this? We know God wants all people to be saved (2 Tim. 2:4). We also know that He loves His children, hears their prayers, and answers (1 Peter 3:12, John 16:23; Psalm 145:18-19). But how about the prayer of this TV character? Would God hear a prayer like that? Isaiah 1:15 answers this well, “When you spread out your hands in pray-er, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening.” God doesn’t hear the prayers of those unbelievers. Prayer is a privilege He grants to His faithful redeemed! That’s why, as Christian parents, we teach our children to pray.

Spice up your prayer life, fellow Christians! Memorize a new prayer for meals. Try a different bedtime prayer. Set a goal of saying a spontaneous prayer five times per day – maybe set an alarm on your phone to remind you. Keep a prayer list visible to yourself and your family and update it regularly. The prayers of a believer are POWERFUL because we tap into our Almighty God!

Grades 1-4 Perform Martin Luther Play Growing up in Germany in a faithful Catholic family, Martin Luther learned that man must atone for his own sin. Fearful of eternal damnation and mortified by his own sinfulness, Martin labored to appease God. He found no peace with God through his works. While diligently studying Scripture, God revealed to Martin the truth about Jesus. The sacrifice of Christ sufficiently paid for all sin. Forgiveness was a free gift, not something people needed to earn or pay to get. The joy, peace, and comfort this knowledge brought Luther moved him to share the message of grace through Jesus. Luther’s message was not met with universal excitement.

Student groups sing Lu-ther hymns in church

“Where’s Martin?” activity

Therefore, children right from the cradle on should begin to pray for the princes, for their brethren and companions. For here you hear the com-mand and the promise: “Ask, and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matt. 7:7). You have been commanded to pray and promised that what you pray for will be given, as in Ps. 50:15, “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify me”; and Ps. 91:15, “When he calls to me, I will an-swer him.”

On Friday, October 20, St. Paul’s Lutheran School students in grades 1 through 4 presented a play depicting several key moments in Martin Luther’s life: John Tetzel’s selling of indulgences, nailing the 95 Theses, Diet of Worms, and moments in the Luther home. The play made it very clear that our celebration of the 500

th anniversary of the Reformation is about giving God the glory for illuminating the true Gospel of

Jesus. Our sins are paid for! Jesus has prepared a place for us with Him in Heaven! Science and Fine Arts Fair St. Paul’s Lutheran School students will participate in the Science and Fine Arts Fair at Luther High School on Saturday, November 4. The theme for this year’s fair is from 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Student artwork will be on display. Soloists and small groups will sing songs for judges. And there will be competitions in math, spelling, and chess. Come and provide encouragement to our young people as they learn to use the gifts God has given them to His glory!

Students today need to be equipped with knowledge and skills to face challenging problems. Using the engineering process, learning how to write code, collecting data from various trials, working collaboratively on a project are all part of what is happening with our LEGO Mindstorms. After learning basic information about the sensors and how to write a program, students in sixth and seventh grades worked in small groups to create bumper cars, traverse obstacle courses, and drag race. Robin Hood The Windy City Players will perform Robin Hood at St. Paul’s on Thursday, November 2. The performance begins at 8:45 am in the gymnasium. All are welcome to attend! Athletics Lady Panther softball had a great season, finishing the season 4-2. The tournament, unfortunately, was rained out. An attempt at a LALSAC cross country meet also got rained out. A second date was attempted, but there weren’t enough runners available. Basketball practices begin October 30. Our first home game is Friday, November 17 against St. Matthew’s, Stoddard. The second home game is Tuesday, November 21, against St. Paul’s, Tomah. Feel free to check out the athletic page on our website for more information.
