For everyone who asks receives; she who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door will be opened…So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7: 7-8, 12 My dear Congregation, Perhaps you’ve heard of the prosperity gospel? There are people who believe that God desires for all of us to be wealthy. I believe that idea is a false reading and interpretation of scripture. If we read the story of the Israelites wandering in the desert with Moses for 40 years we might come to understand that what God intends for us is that God wants us to trust in God for our every need and that our needs will be provided for- which is much different than the idea that we will be wealthy because God loves us. We are coming to the time of year when we gather to give thanks for all we have with our families and at church we take stock and begin a stewardship drive. The stewardship committee is going to ask. We are going to seek and we are going to knock. Our goal is to ask everyone to contribute to the well-being of the church. We are seeking to get everyone on board with being the church – that means that we will ask for your help to continue to be God’s beacon in Lakeville. Does talk about money cause you anxiety? It does for many people AND keeping quiet about it makes it a taboo subject. Silence doesn’t help with the anxiety. God’s point with the Israelites was that there is enough to go around. We have everything we need, we always have and we always will and if we choose to share it so will everybody else. Please don’t be offended when we ask, seek and knock. It will feel a bit different this year. In the past, we may have been reticent to ask boldly. This year we will bring money talk, stewardship definitions, and our goals for the next few years out into the open. Some of us will be able to contribute gifts of money. Some of us have the time to offer gifts of ministry by helping with events or using a skill to create something. Each of these ways of contributing are worthy of God’s blessing and each of them is needed to keep our congregation witnessing the love of God in Lakeville. Taking our cue from our ancestor Moses, and the tribe he led, we will trust that God will lead us forward and help us to provide by sharing what we have as we would hope others would share with us. Be at peace with the knowledge that we are held in God’s care. With you, I pray about my pledge. In prayer, Greta

Matthew 7: 7-8, 12

My dear Congregation,

Perhaps you’ve heard of the prosperity gospel?

In prayer,

Greta
