The President’s Message by Steve McConnell

Arkansas ASHRAE Members, we are two meetings into the Fall ASHRAE schedule and we are already off to a strong start with great attendance. The success for these meetings should be credited directly to the hard work CTTC Chair, Drew Grant, and his committee. He has provided two great meetings so far, and I know November’s meeting will be outstanding as well. We also had a number of first time guests. If you’re looking to join ASHRAE, please reach out to Jared Hendrickson or anyone on the Membership Promotion committee and they will get you connected.

This month our program will by ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Dr Stephanie Taylor, MD, M. Arch, on "Understanding the Powerful Influence of Indoor Air on Humans." I hope you all will be in attendance for the meeting. This is a great opportunity to invite a guest. We have already extended an invitation to ASHE members, some architects, and various hospital engineers in Central Arkansas. Dr Taylor spoke to our Chapter last year and we are excited to welcome her back. She will also be speaking at the NW Arkansas Chapter meeting on Thursday, November 6th.

I mentioned this last month in the President’s Message and at the Chapter meeting but I wanted to remind everyone that we will be implementing a new RSVP policy beginning with the November meeting. We will have an “Early Bird Registration” for anyone that registers 48 hours prior to a Chapter meeting at $20.00/ea. (i.e. Chapter meeting, Wednesday @ 11:30am, early bird registration ends on Monday @ 11:30 am). If you register after that time period or just show up without registering, we will charge you $30.00. Please RSVP early to help us get an accurate head count for lunch each month.

We had beautiful weather and a great turn out for our Fall Golf Tournament at the end of September. Thank you to the Social/Golf committee, Josh Robinson, Nick Moore, and Hunter Brock for putting on another successful tournament. Thank you to all of our players, hole sponsors, and food & beverage sponsors for helping us raise money for Research Promotion.

Ron McCarty, Research Promotion Chair, has some upcoming Chapter events planned. On Thursday, November 7th, 6:00 – 7:30 pm, we will have a Donor recognition and appreciation event at Lost Forty. All members and guests are welcome as we take some time thank donors from the past year. This is also a great way to learn about how you can contribute and help us reach our RP goal for the 2019-2020 year. You can make a personal or a corporate contribution. Please reach out to Ron for more information. Another way you can contribute to RP is buying one or more raffle tickets for the Sportsman Raffle. Tickets are $20/each and will be on sale from now until December 4th. You can buy in person or pay online. The winners will be selected at a live drawing at the December 4th Chapter Meeting. Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Stephanie Taylor graduated from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1984 and subsequently practiced pediatric oncology and did research in cellular growth mechanisms for several decades. Alarmed by the high number of patients acquiring infections during their in-patient treatment, she became convinced that the hospital built-environment had a role in patient outcomes. Realizing that she knew little about the design and management of buildings and mechanical systems, she returned to school in 2005 to obtain a Master’s degree in Architecture.

Dr. Taylor now works as an international consultant and research leader in designing and operating hospitals and other commercial buildings. She investigates the interaction between human and building microbiomes, and how indoor air, surface materials and building construction affects all indoor life. Her unique approach is to use health data of building occupants to determine which aspects of the indoor environment support or harm human health. She has published in Nature, Science and other peer reviewed journals, is a Distinguished Lecturer for ASHRAE, and a regular contributor to Engineered Systems magazine.

Presentation Description:

Why are human beings struggling with so many infections, allergies and chronic diseases? Are we simply becoming weaker creatures while microbes are evolving into more infectious and problematic germs? Or, we are missing something very important – some force or factor that is simultaneously increasing our vulnerability while strengthening micro-organisms that make us sick? Come to this seminar to learn how essential YOU, the professionals in designing, building and managing indoor environments, are in turning around these alarming health trends.

Understanding the powerful influence of indoor air on humans is not just theoretically interesting; it has become an urgent topic for all of us. For those unsure of the “return- on investment” for buildings that support occupant health, financial data will also be presented.

Get ready to be totally amazed by the power of properly managed indoor air and learn actionable steps to improve your own health, productivity and learning.

YEA & Student Activities

Student Activities University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) Visit:

Josh Faulkner visited UALR and talked to about 25 freshman students in mechanical, electrical, civil, and construction management programs. He spoke about ASHRAE and the HVAC industry in general. He also spoke to them about interviewing skills, networking, and about making themselves stand out as graduates and getting internships in any field that they may be considering.

ASHRAE RP

Arkansas ASHRAE Research Promotion By: Ron McCarty, RP Chair Thank you all for your generous contributions and sponsorships benefiting ASHRAE Research. We have a number of ongoing fund raisers in the works. The Sportsman’s Raffle RP promotion is in full swing with only a month and half let until the drawing. Tickets for the Sportsman’s Raffle can be purchased on line at https://arkansasashrae.org/catalog.php or directly from Ron McCarty (call 501-350-5728). The drawing will be held at the December 4th meeting. Earlier this week we held the first of two Texas Hold’em Poker Nights for Research Promotion. The first event was hosted by Powers of Arkansas. The big winners for the night were Randy Moore and RP. Congratulations to Randy and thank you for the those that participated and donated to ASHRAE RP.

The next event on the RP calendar is the Donor Recognition event for all those individuals/companies that donated last year to ASHRAE RP. We have switch the event from a breakfast to and after work toasting. On November 7th ASHRAE RP and a few unnamed sponsors will host a Donor Recognition/Appreciation at Lost Forty Brewery 501 Byrd St, Little Rock from 6:00 to 7:30. This event is our way of thanking everyone for their support to ASHREA RP.

Our calling campaign will begin as we approach the new year to thank you for contributing in the past and asking you to help again this year. I look forward to talking with each of you about RP.

Russell Black, Arkansas ASHRAE Historian

With the Northwest Arkansas Chapter successfully completing its inaugural year as a Chapter (2018-2019), I think it would be appropriate to acknowledge two pivotal leaders who helped to nurture the section in its infancy and did it so successfully that the section became a full-fledged Chapter. Those two leaders: Sherry Baldwin and Randy Moore.

Sherry was Arkansas ASHRAE’s first female President and was a Golden Gavel President. Randy, after serving as NW Arkansas Section liaison, would later become Arkansas Chapter President in 2002. Please read Randy’s March 15, 1998 Leadership Recall Interview to gain background on how he and Sherry worked to revitalize the Northwest Section and grounded the Section so successfully that now it is a sister Chapter.

QUESTION #1: Would you give a brief biographical sketch of your life. (Place of birth, family size, early schooling, higher education, employment background, current family, etc.)

Born - West Helena, Arkansas. Father: Nicholas R. Moore, Jr., Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering - 1972 (University of Arkansas); former NASA JPL

engineer; now in private consulting in Los Angeles, CA. Mother: Vivian M. Clarke - deceased; retired Coca Cola USA office manager at Canners of Eastern Arkansas -

West Memphis. Grade School: L. Bates - Fayetteville, Arkansas. Graduate of Marion High School - Marion, Arkansas. Graduate Engineer: University of Arkansas - BSME. Johnson Controls: Sales Engineer in Shreveport, LA and Little Rock, AR - 1984 through 1991; Area Manager in

Springdale, Arkansas - 1991 through 1993. Power of Arkansas: Branch Manager - 1993 to 1997 - Springdale, Arkansas; Vice President of Sales - 1997 to

present - Little Rock, Arkansas. Married: wife Sharon M. Moore and two sons Nicholas (6 yrs.) and Tanner (2 yrs.).

QUESTION #2: Please describe what attracted you to the engineering industry as well as your first job in the engineering industry.

I was attracted to the engineering industry through my father and his commitment to a Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas Mechanical Engineering Department. My first job in this industry came through a college recruiter on campus at the University of Arkansas. I joined Johnson Controls in Shreveport as a service sales engineer for HVAC equipment and controls.

QUESTION #3: How and when did you get involved in ASHRAE?

After transferring to Little Rock with Johnson Controls, the manager, Arkansas ASHRAE member "Gentleman" Jim Pitts, encouraged my participation, and I joined in 1987.

QUESTION #4: As the Northwest Arkansas Section liaison, what were some of the major challenges that you faced with revitalizing this section?

The Northwest Section was chartered in 1987 through the efforts of three long time members in Northwest Arkansas, John Symonds, Murl Meredith, and Jim Bradford. Active for several years through dedication and commitment by this group, the Northwest Section developed well and involved engineering students from the University of Arkansas. Therefore, the biggest challenges in the Fall of 1995 to revitalize the section was to come back as strong as the section was started; restore the involvement from the University of Arkansas; and reach out to current as well as new members to sustain the section into the future.

QUESTION #5: What year was the Northwest Arkansas Section re-started? The Fall of 1995

QUESTION #6: What efforts were made to attract individual and company involvement in the Northwest Arkansas Section?

Attracting involvement in the Section required contacts to members on the roster to inform them of meetings in both Ft. Smith and Fayetteville, which would have current topics of interest in our HVAC industry. Support from the "Charter Members" as well as "Chapter Officers" enabled our meetings to attract interest and deliver informative tech sessions and programs which resulted in our highest attendance ever of 48 members and guests at our March '98 meeting in Ft. Smith at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. This meeting was hosted entirely by OG&E.

QUESTION #7: What advice would you give to future Northwest Arkansas Section Liaisons?

Future Northwest Section Liaisons should endeavor to deliver quality tech sessions and programs which attract the consulting engineers as well as local HVAC industry contractors, designers, operators, and involve other section members in planning for ASHRAE Research, social functions, and programs.

QUESTION #8: What attracted you to the Northwest Arkansas Liaison position?

A sincere request from our past president Sherry Baldwin to revitalize the Section as a part of a strategy to get the Gavel back in Arkansas.............. and I think we did!

Arkansas ASHRAE RP 2020 Trap Shoot: Arkansas ASHRAE will be doing a trap shooting tournament in March of 2020. Teams will consist of five (5) shooters. The event Fee is $750 and will include four (4) boxes of shells, lunch, and door prizes. Payment is due by March 6th, 2020.
