Rock Solid Granite Company Field Trip Submitted by Pam Haversman

On November 8, twenty-three rockers from the combined rock clubs of White River Rock Gem Mineral Club and the Tulip City Rock Gem Club arrived at the Rock Solid Granite Company in West Olive to meet with owner and master craftsman, Rich Henderson and wife Kerri. Rich took the group through the process of layout, cutting and fitting stone counter tops and walls and even sinks. As one would imagine, some stones are easier to work with than others. Soft stone, such as soapstone is rather easy; others, such as quartzite can be problematic for stone artists. Harder stones tend to chip more easily. Rock slabs from all over the world adorned this shop, both inside and out. Stone slabs with beautiful fossils, unique patterns and minerals abound. And, some of them fluoresce! Upon the end of Rich's presentation, he allowed the Club members to take what-ever scrap counter tops home. We had to dig through about four inches of snow to get to the tailings, but it was worth it! As a parting gift, Rich gave everybody stone 'ice cubes', talk about a gracious host! If you are in the neighborhood of this sweet little shop, please stop in and look around. And, if you are looking for an unusual stone counter top, please consider this craftsman.

Children's Workshop Review Submitted by Vicki Hartung

The November Saturday’s children geode workshop was a huge success. We had 58 people attending. The children were able to learn all about geodes from Mike & Vicki’s presentation and then enjoyed cracking open their chosen geode during craft time. It would not have ran so smoothly without the help from our awesome club members: Drover & Beth Hall, Nancy Reschke, Jacalynn Bax, Suzanne Ritchie and Karla Pendleton. The children were great and had a lot of fun. The parents had fun cracking open their geodes too. If parents were able to get pictures of the kids cracking open the geodes, we would love to see them.
