Noises from the Big End. Bearing in mind the importance of our first electronic ‘Zoom’ meeting (which was made available to the majority of members, giving them the opportunity to put forward their views on the two special resolutions, as previously listed), I was surprised to find that out of almost 400 members, only 5 were interested enough in the club’s affairs to attend the meeting. Even though the attendance numbers were down, I was very happy with the way the Zoom system worked and pleased the vote to accept the two special resolutions was passed. The minutes of the meeting are on the website. For your benefit, the committee plan to continue using this new technology, which, I must add, is remarkable in its capacity to bring members from Orange and Wollongong to the same meeting with Sydney, allowing the majority of us the chance to join in and participate. I am looking forward to the next Zoom meeting at 8pm on 28th October (details and updates are posted on the website) and trust in my belief that our members are not just spectators but participators in club life and hope to see a few more members embrace the technology and in so doing, show support for the committee in their efforts to streamline the club’s administration and to bring all of our branch members closer together. In addition to the electronic Zoom meetings, the new electronic membership joining system has proven to be very popular with new members. Considering more people are working from home these days, we have seen in the past few months, an increase in new member applications, mainly due to forgotten restoration projects (re)emerging from the depths of the man caves. The feedback from new members on the guidance of the flow charts, (available from the club’s website, outlining the steps required for either Historic or Classic registration) has been positive and well received. It’s good to see the support for the various road runs, as listed in the club calendar and hope we will be in a better position to host our rallies and show days in 2021. Remembering always to keep to the required 1.5m distancing rule and to uphold the club’s covid19 safety plan whenever in a group. Now, Is your workbench just as messy as mine? Occasional Comments
The start of spring has brought with it some good riding days as well as some wet ones, Sydney Northern rides in September gave us an example of both. First the Wednesday ride was washed out, I drove the car down to the start and predictably no one showed up so I got to go back home after about 20 minutes. The Sunday ride was completely different with a warm and sunny start with 9 bikes at the start. Not too many older bikes with a panhead Harley, a Suzuki RE5 and my Z1000ST the only bikes on club plates. Not that it matters what bike you choose to ride as we were all out enjoying the lovely Spring weather along with pretty much every other bike in Sydney. We wended our way out through some of the less travelled roads in the Hills district and on to Wisemans Ferry for a Lunch break at the café. Mick on the Harley had an issue with his rear brake being very weak (perhaps fluid on the brake pads ) and he decided to head back rather than risk it on the longer ride. After lunch most of us headed across the Webbs Creek Ferry and on the very scenic route to St Albans for another stop. With the Hotel packed and not wanting to get caught out with the traffic heading back on the Webbs Creek Ferry we didn't stay too long. Fortunately we all just made it on the first ferry back and from there we went our separate ways home. Next ride was a Wednesday ride to Thirlmere, six starters for the ride, not bad considering the grey skies and forecast for rain later in the day. The range of bikes included an Ariel, Honda 750/4, Honda VF500, Kawasaki Z1000, Moto Guzzi 1400 California, Yamaha V-Max 1200. Beginning from Blacktown and wending our way through backroads to avoid traffic, we managed to stay together for most of the ride down through some wonderful country to the Oaks, Oakdale and on to Thirlmere for a pie and a natter. We stayed perhaps a bit too long and took our separate ways home. By the time I filled the bike and headed out it was beginning to shower and increased a bit all the way until around Penrith, so a bit of care was required on the wet roads, but fortunately traffic was light and there were no incidents. In the shed work slowly continues on the latest crusty not Trusty Triumph 500 with sourcing what parts I can from my collection. I managed to find a really lovely tail light bracket with just perfect patina to match the rear guard, but have had to buy a repro tail light as I only had later model lights on the shelf, might have to scratch it up and leave it in the weather for a while to get the right look. With no decent primary cases, I have decided to try and use the ones that came with the bike although the outer cover has been modified for racing, with holes drilled everywhere. Also it looks like it had been left sitting on the dirt for many years as it has deep corrosion, so I have tried to fill the corrosion holes and paint it black, it sort of fits with the rest of the bike. For those of you who haven't built a bike from a collection of parts from various bikes, it’s a long and sometimes dirty road as often every nut, bolt and part needs to be pulled completely down, cleaned by either degreasing or wire brushing or both and plated or painted and while many parts need to be modified or made and even then pushed, pulled, bent and twisted in order to get them to fit. VICE REPORT This edition of The Vice Report will relate one of the most epic motorcycle adventures of all time. Because of the need to try and condense a book down to fit into a couple of pages here, it will be presented over at least two issues of this magazine. Just in case you were wondering, the motorcycle at the centre of this story is a Panther of course. The ride took place from December 1934 to July 1935. Two young English women, Theresa Wallach and Florence Blenkiron, both very keen and competent motorcyclists, with much competition experience, particularly at Brooklands, rode a 1934 M100 600cc Panther sidecar outfit, pulling a trailer, from London to Cape Town, by way of the Sahara Desert! Why a Panther? The British Motor Cycle and Cycle Manufacturer and Trades Union had recently decreed that no manufacturer could respond to requests for sponsorship and patronage from clubs or individuals. Although a founder member of this Union, Phelon and Moore (manufacturers of Panthers) had been shown the door because of their undercutting of prices of the hugely successful 250cc Red Panther model, sold exclusively throughout the 1930s Depression by London Dealers Pride and Clark. P&M management succumbed to the persuasion of these two resolute women. P&M wouldn't provide a one off special, but asked the ladies to choose from the current catalogue. Eventually other manufacturers came on board, with Watsonian supplying the sidecar and trailer, as well as donations of oil and grease, and spark plugs. Theresa Wallach was born in 1909. She had a very comfortable existence, but into her teenage years, began to realise the injustices that women tended to face, on account of them being women. He father was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, and had what was said to be one of the best private collections of archaeological and anthropological artefacts in the country, with items from Africa, South America, the Middle and Far East. This collection certainly piqued Theresa's interest in travel, and what lay beyond the boundaries of England. It was always expected that she would settle into a comfortable life of being a home maker, as society demanded. In 1928, she began an engineering course at the University of London, and discovered motorcycles. She was taught to ride, and bought a BSA Blue Star. She joined the London Ladies Motorcycle Club and the International Motorcyclists Touring Club. She became involved in sporting activities at Brooklands, entering her first race in 1932. She won, and was presented with a trophy donated by Sir Malcolm Campbell. Theresa became one of only three women to be awarded a Gold Star, for lapping Brooklands at 100mph. One of the other women was Florence Blenkiron. Florence Blenkiron was born in 1904. She began riding motorcycles at age 16. She took part in her first ladies’ race at Brooklands in 1928, riding a Grindlay-Peerless. It was at Brooklands that she first met Theresa Wallach in 1933. They became firm friends, participating in trials riding, track events and touring. They even learned trick riding. In April 1934, Florence became the first woman rider to be awarded a Brooklands “Gold Star”, lapping at 102.06mph on a 500cc JAP-engined Grindlay-Peerless. Florence had for some time been meaning to visit family members in South Africa. Theresa half-jokingly suggested that Florence might go there by motorcycle. The seeds were sown. They spent the next twelve months learning as much as they could about Africa, and planning for the first motorcycle crossing of the Sahara desert, thence to Cape Town. To be continued ............. Dave’s Diary No.26 – Thread stretch.
Dear diary, while waiting on some parts to be machined by our friendly club member, Mark Mansell, I ventured into the back of the shed and decided to re-acquaint myself with a project I had placed on the ‘To Do’ list, some time back in the 1980’s. The bike is a very rare 1962 G9 Matchless 500cc twin. Rare because the factory never listed making them. There is no mention of the G9 range for 1962 in any of the AMC literature. FYI, The G9 had a long and successful career with a continuous, 13 year production from 1949 to 1961. The G9 engine configuration was used as the basis for the award winning G45 racer. Mine however, is just the humble road version, purchased in the late 70’s as a non goer, purely for spare parts to keep my every day 1963 G12 Matchless 650 running reliably. The G12 was my only transport at the time and is still with me today (now with a sidecar). Surprisingly, most of the parts between the 62/G9 500 and the 63/G12 650 are interchangeable but as luck had it, I hardly needed to use any of the G9 parts. Over the years I have come across only four other 62/G9’s and research (confirmed by AMC guru Ted Conran) showed these bikes were requested by the NSW Police as ‘Station Bikes’, not destined for highway patrol. Since the factory were not making these bikes in 1962 the AMC sales team agreed to assemble a small batch from spare parts. These bikes were then sold as spare parts and not as production items, however all the engines were stamped as 62/G9’s, making these the very last of the G9’s. Back to the project at hand and I decided to remove the top end from the engine only to find the heads needed overhauling and the pistons needed a new set of rings. Pretty good for a 59-year-old, ex police hack. Upon dismantling, I noticed the cylinder hold down studs had been overtightened causing some of the nuts to be frozen to the studs and with age, caused some of these 5/16” studs to loosen from the crankcase. Examination revealed the threads around the nut had been stretched, most likely by over tensioning the heads and by not keeping to the recommended 18 Lb Ft torque. To test for thread stretch, you can use a thread gauge (as shown) or the correct thread tap. As a last resort, use an equivalent (New) bolt to compare against. If the threads, of the gauge /tap or bolt, do not match perfectly, then the stud must be replaced. Make sure a new nut turns freely along the full length of the thread. Don’t throw your old parts away as sometimes the old parts may be re-purposed. In my case the AMC twins came in a variety of sizes from 500 to 550 to 600 to 650 and 750cc configurations, each with different cylinder stud lengths. Therefore, it is possible to use a discarded longer stud, from a similar model, to be shortened by cutting off the damaged thread and then re-threading the stud, with a new thread to the correct length. The potential benefits of fine threads are: 1. Size for size a fine thread is stronger than a coarse thread. This is both in tension (because of the larger stress area) and shear (because of their larger minor diameter). 2. Fine threads have also less tendency to loosen since the thread incline is smaller and hence so is the off torque. 3. Because of the smaller pitch they allow finer adjustments in applications that need such a feature. 4. Fine threads can be more easily tapped into hard materials and thin walled tubes. 5. Fine threads require less torque to develop equivalent bolt preloads. On the negative side: 1. Fine threads are more susceptible to galling than coarse threads. 2. They need longer thread engagements and are more prone to damage and thread fouling. 3. They are also less suitable for high speed assembly since they are more likely to seize when being tightened.

Sat 3rd Trials/ Enduro Classic Bikes – Canowindra – Attended by Gordon C, Dave S, Aaron D, Glen W, Barry S, Kevin D, Lauran Daniels, Jay Wicks. Good to see younger riders. 5 historic off road bikes. Enduro and Trials track. I have asked owner if we can camp next year – he agreed and we all agreed the event should be repeated next year, along with the Hill End ride.

40th Orange Rally: Format or rally to be decided at this meeting. Rally Committee met two weeks ago and decided that it was not
advisable to have the full Rally at Lake Canobolas due to uncertainty over COVID.
However, the committee did discuss the option of getting an expression of interest from past participants to see if they would be
interested in two separate rides on Sat 13 Feb and Sunday 14th. These would be un-marshalled rides, with a local leader and tail-
end Charlie. If numbers were larger than expected, we could run two rides on each day in different localities, to keep numbers
down.
Meals and accommodation are up to the participants.
This proposal is flexible depending on the response , but at least keeps the
rally going.
Council has agreed for us to use the showground as a staging point and we
can hire a pavilion Saturday night if we wish for $200. David Scott has
checked with the adjoining caravan park and there are currently 8 cabins
free on that date, these accommodate two adults at a cost of around $100
per night. There are also caravan sites and camping sites available, with a
gate opening onto the showground.

Rides past: Ron Foye Ride was to Warragamba Dam, 8 Riders, lunch was enjoyed together with a look around the
dam. A bit of light rain on the ride back but nothing too serious.
Tortoise ride has become by default the Saturday meeting ride to the meetings, pending a return to more normality. In the meantime the 2 stroke rides are available to cater for older bikes as well – the route and roads will be decided based on what bikes are in attendance. Likewise Greg Cheney advised that the South riders have regular log book rides through national park, which being 60kph most of the way are suitable for the older smaller bikes. 2 Stroke Tuesday was to West Dapto and the Huntley Hill climb site. Member Wayne Penrose takes around 24 seconds to go from top to bottom in his highly modified VW hill climb race car, the two strokes took a little longer (not that there were any timed runs on the day)
Off road day at the usual venue, Belanglo state forest, a good roll up, excellent weather with a mix of
dirt bikes and riders from the modern and quick through to the classic and quick (or classic and slow in the case of the secretary) but everyone sets their own pace and a good ride was enjoyed by all with both dust and mud featuring. The tracks are become really chopped up by 4 wheel drives in particular and bits of the single track sections are getting deep grooves from bikes in wet weather– deeper than footpeg height in some spots.
Dam ride to the Oaks via a circuitous route, as usual, with some new roads for some attendees.
Ted Conran ride was to Kandos and Blayney via various back roads between here and there and back. Wet ride back from Blayney on the Sunday, resulting in some “machine fail to proceed” moments, but all made the trip OK

TED CONRAN MEMORIAL RIDE 2020 An amazing three day ride was enjoyed by all our members to the beautiful country and roads between the " Gong" and Kandos. Twenty-two riders on club plate and full rego bikes covered in excess of 1200 kilometres in motorcycle heaven. Accommodation was the usual pub style. The meals and drinks at the end of the day were well earned and much appreciated. We stayed one night in Kandos and one in Blayney. I have to acknowledge the always busy Mick Johnson, for always putting his hand up to organize these two and three day rides. I'm sure I can speak for everyone in saying thanks for such a well organised weekend of riding, roads, accommodation and camaraderie. Thanks. Hopefully we will see you on the next ride somewhere. CEMCC ORANGE RALLY 2021
Orange Rally 2021 – To be or Not to Be? As a result of uncertainty over the situation with COVID, Orange Rally organisers have decided to run a modified event on Sat 13th and Sunday 14th of February. Following discussions with Council, we believe it is too difficult to safely run the event with overnight accommodation at Lake Canobolas Scout Camp. We are proposing to run a ride on the Saturday and Sunday around the beautiful Orange countryside, with participants organising their own accommodation in Orange. There are two caravan parks and numerous motels and hotels – check out the Orange Information Centre for details.
We are intending to have a BBQ on the Saturday night. We need you to let us know in the next two weeks if you are likely to participate by sending an expression of interest listing names to: David Scott at [email protected] Once we have an idea of numbers, this will allow us to make more detailed plans, which will be in the December Clatter and emailed to all past Orange Rally participants who have email addresses.

VALE Ron Standfield 22/09/1932 – 22/09/2020
Ron recently passed away on his 88th birthday. He joined the club around 1990 and was a regular at many rallies, weekends away and countless club rides - generally on his 1939 BSA which was the same bike he got his license on! He restored this bike and rode it to Kyogle and back. The family still have the bike, including the original bill of sale from Bennett and Woods in Lismore. Ron worked at the family business from age 17 until he retired at age 69 and made many friends through the club, a number of whom attended his funeral. Ron had many bikes over the years but always had a soft spot for BSAs, continuing to ride up until about 12 years ago when failing health prevented him from riding - but he always maintained a keen interest in the club, and bikes generally. (Contributed by Narelle and Sean Hogan). The Club extends its sympathy to the family for their loss.

Orange CEMCC Off-Road Ride Eight keen off-road riders, members of the local CEMCC brought out old bikes and some new for the opportunity to practice their skills on an Enduro Track and Trials track in the hills outside the nearby town of Canowindra. Classic bikes included Gordon Crisp’s 1970’s trials Bultaco, his Yamaha of the same period, Dave Scott’s 74 Montessa 250 Enduro and Aaron Daniel’s and Barry Swain’s 1980’s TT 350 Yamahas. We also welcomed two of our youngest members, Lauren Daniel and Jay Wicks. A great day enjoyed by all.
