4 Christmas Songbook 2014

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donder and Blitzen, But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Had a very shiny nose, And if you ever saw it, You could even say it glows. All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names; They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say: “Rudolph with your nose so bright, Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then how the reindeer loved him As they shouted out with glee, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, “You’ll go down in history.”

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

What child is this?What child is this, who, laid to rest,On Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,While shepherds watch are keeping?

(Chorus)This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:Hast, haste to bring him laud,The babe, the son of Mary.

Why lies he in such mean estate?Where ox and ass are feeding?Good Christian, fear: for sinners hereThe silent Word is pleading.

ChorusSo bring him incense, gold, and myrrh,Come, peasant, king, to own him.The King of king’s salvation brings,Let loving hearts enthrone him.

Chorus

Go Tell It On The MountainWhen I was a seekerI sought both night and day,I asked the Lord to help me,And he showed me the way.

Chorus

Go tell it on the mountainOver the hills and everywhere,Go tell it on the mountain,Our Jesus Christ is born.

He made me a watchmanUpon a city wall,And if I am a Christian,I am the least of all.

Chorus

Have a holly, jolly Christmas;It's the best time of the yearI don't know if there'll be snow,but have a cup of cheer.Have a holly, jolly Christmas;And when you walk down the streetSay Hello to friends you knowand everyone you meet.

Oh, ho, the mistletoehung where you can see;Somebody waits for you;Kiss her once for me.Have a holly jolly Christmas,and in case you didn't hear,Oh by golly, have a holly,jolly Christmas this year.

7Christmas Songbook 2014

Sleigh bells ring, are you listen-ing, In the lane snow is glistening, A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight, Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird, He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown,He’ll say, “Are you married?” We’ll say, “No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town.”

Later on we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire, To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown, We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the kids will come and knock him down.

When it snows ain’t it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling, We’ll frolic and play,The Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland.

9Christmas Songbook 2014

God Rest Ye Merry GentlemenGod rest ye merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Savior Was born on Christmas day, To save us all from Satan’s pow’r When we were gone astray;

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

From God our heavenly Father A blessed angel came. And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

“Fear not,” then said the angel,

“Let nothing you affright, This day is born a Savior, Of virtue, power, and might; So frequently to vanquish all The friends of Satan quite”;

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

The shepherds at those tidings Rejoiced much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding, In tempest, storm, and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway This blessed babe to find:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

But when to Bethlehem they

came, Whereat this infant lay They found him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth efface:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

Said the night wind to the little lamb, do you see what I see Way up in the sky, little lamb, do you see what I see A star, a star, dancing in the night With a tail as big as a kite With a tail as big as a kite.

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy, do you hear what I hear Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy, do you hear what I hear A song, a song, high above the trees With a voice as big as the sea With a voice as big as the sea.

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, do you know what I know In your palace warm, mighty king, do you know what I know A Child, a Child shivers in the cold Let us bring Him silver and gold Let us bring Him silver and gold.

Said the king to the people every-where, listen to what I say Pray for peace, people everywhere! listen to what I say The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night He will bring us goodness and light He will bring us goodness and light.

I'm dreaming of a white ChristmasJust like the ones I used to knowWhere the treetops glistenand children listenTo hear sleigh bells in the snow.

I'm dreaming of a white ChristmasWith every Christmas card I writeMay your days be merry and brightAnd may all your Christmases be white.

A White Christmas

Jolly Old Saint NicholasJolly Old Saint Nicholas,Lean your ear this way!Don’t you tell a single soul?What I’m going to say;Christmas Eve is coming soon,Now, you dear old man, Whisper what you’ll bring to me;Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve,When I’m fast asleep,Down the chimney broad and black,With your pack you’ll creep;All the stocking you will findHanging in a row;Mine will be the shortest one,You’ll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates;Suzy wants a dollNellie wants a storybook;She thinks dolls are folly;As for me, my little brainIsn’t very bright;Choose for me, old Santa Claus,What you think is right.

15Christmas Songbook 2014

Words by Chappeau de RoquemaureTranslated by J.S. Dwight

Oh holy night!The stars are brightly shiningIt is the night of the dear Savior’s birth!Long lay the world in sin and error piningTill he appear’d and the soul felt its worth.A thrill of hope the weary world rejoicesFor yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Fall on your kneesOh hear the angel voicesOh night divineOh night when Christ was bornOh night divineOh night divine

Led by the light of Faith serenely

beamingWith glowing hearts by His cra-dle we standSo led by light of a star sweetly gleamingHere come the wise men from Orient landThe King of Kings lay thus in lowly mangerIn all our trials born to be our friend.

Truly He taught us to love one anotherHis law is love and His gospel is peaceChains shall He break for the slave is our brotherAnd in His name all oppression shall ceaseSweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name.

Oh Holy Night

Mary Did You Know?by:LOWRY, MARK / GREENE, BUDDY

Mary, did you know That your baby boy will one day walk on water? Did you know That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters? Did you know That your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that youve delivered Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man? Did you know That your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand? Did you know That your baby boy has walked where angels trod? And when you kiss your little

baby Youve kissed the face of god

Mary, did you know? The blind will see The deaf will hear And the dead will live again The lame will leap The dumb will speak The praises of the lamb

Mary, did you know That your baby boy is lord of all creation? Did you know That your baby boy will one day rule the nations? Did you know That your baby boy is heavens perfect lamb? This sleeping child you’re holding Is the great I am

Melody - "Bethlehem", Gottfried Wilhem Fink, 1842 Nahum Tate, 1700

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,All seated on the ground,The angel of the Lord came down,And glory shone around. Fear not, said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled minds;Glad tidings of great joy I bring, To you and all mankind. To you in David's town this day,Is born of David's line,The Saviour, who is Christ, the Lord,And this shall be the sign:The heavenly Babe you there shall findTo human view displayed.All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,And in a manger laid.

Thus spake the seraph - and forthwithAppeared a shining throngOf angels, praising God, and thusAddressed their joyful song:All glory be to God on high,And to the earth be peace;Good-will henceforth from Heaven to menBegin, and never cease!

While Shepherds Watched

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains.

Chorus: Gloria, In Excelsius Deo

Shepherd why this jubilee, Why your joyous strains prolong What the gladsome tidings be, Which inspire your heavenly song? Chorus

Come to Bethlehem and see, Christ the Lord the newborn king. See him in a manger laid, Whom the choirs of angels praiseChorus

Let It SnowOh, the weather outside is frightful,But the fire is so delightful,And since we've no place to go,Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

It doesn't show signs of stopping,And I brought some corn for popping;The lights are turned way down low,Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

When we finally say good night,How I'll hate going out in the storm;But if you really hold me tight,All the way home I'll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,And, my dear, we're still good-bye-ing,But as long as you love me so.Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

18 Christmas Songbook 2014

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; Take a look in the five-and-ten, glistening once again With candy canes and silver lanes aglow.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Toys in ev’ry store, But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be On your own front door.

A pair of Hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Dolls that will talk and will go

for a walk Is the hope of Janice and Jen; And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; There’s a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing Right within your heart.

Grandma Got Run Over By a ReindeerIrish RoversGrandma got run over by a reindeerWalking home from our house Christmas Eve.You can say there’s no such thing as Santa,But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

She’d been drinkin’ too much eggnog,And we’d begged her not to go.But she’d left her medication,So she stumbled out the door into the snow.

When they found her Christmas mornin’,At the scene of the attack.There were hoof prints on her forehead,And incriminatin’ claw marks on her back.

ChorusGrandma got run over by a reindeer,Walkin’ home from our house Christmas EveYou can say there’s no such thing as Santa,But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now were all so proud of Grandpa,He’s been takin’ this so well.See him in there watchin’ football,Drinkin’ beer and playin’ cards with cousin Belle.

It’s not Christmas without Grandma.All the family’s dressed in black.And we just can’t help but wonderShould we open up her gifts or send them back?

ChorusNow the goose is on the tableAnd the pudding made of fig.And a blue and silver candle,That would just have matched the hair in Grandma’s wig.

I’ve warned all my friends and neighbours“Better watch out for yourselves.”They should never give a license,To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Chorus

The First NoelThe first Noel, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star Shining in the the East, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a King was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew nigh to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three, Full reverently upon their knee; And offered there in his presence, Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

Frosty The SnowmanFrosty the snowman was a jolly happy soulWith a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coalFrosty the snowman is a fairy tale they sayHe was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one dayThere must have been some magic in that old silk hat they foundFor when they placed it on his head he began to dance aroundO Frosty the snowman was alive as he could beAnd the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and meThumpetty thump thumpthumpetty thump thumpLook at Frosty goThumpetty thump thumpthumpetty thump thumpOver the hills of snow

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that daySo he said“Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away”Down to the village with a broomstick in his handRunning here and there all around the square sayingCatch me if you canHe led them down the streets of town right to the traffic copAnd he only paused a moment when he heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the Snowman, had to hurry on his way,But he waved goodbye,Sayin’ “Don’t you cry,I’ll be back again some day.”

May the timeless message of Christmas shine for you and your loved ones during this special time.

Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day.

Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say,Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.

Hark; now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day.Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.

While shepherds watch their flocks by night,They saw a bright new shining star,They hear a choir of angels sing, the music came from afar.

Hark; now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day.

Now Joseph and his wife, Mary, came to Bethlehem that night,They found no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight.And then they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn,And in a manger cold and dark, Mary’s little boy child was born.

Hark; now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day.Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.

A Visit From St. NicholasHenry Livingston, 1808

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.Away to the window I flew like a flash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snowGave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now! Dasher, now! Dancer, now! Prancer, and Vixen!On! Comet, on! Cupid, on! Donner and Blitzen!To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roofThe prancing and pawing of each little hoof.As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;He had a broad face and a little round belly,That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,And laying his finger aside of his nose,And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
