Investigatingi. Definition of the goal and global context for the project based on

personal interests.

My goal was to create a song which will be able to spread awareness for climate change/global warming and current issues.

After a difficult decision tossing up ideas which involve my interests such as a cricket podcast or creating a video game, I eventually decided to write a song as I have always been quite interested in music and learning to play the guitar and I am also quite creative so wanted to do something along these lines.

This goal was highly challenging because it had three parts – (1) teaching myself the guitar (2) learning how to write the music to a song and (3) writing lyrics to communicate a message and create awareness about climate change.

My goal relates to the global context of ‘personal and cultural expression’ in multiple ways. Creating a song is a personal expression. Cultural expression was through the style of music as well as the subject matter. Since I intended for my song to be a very indie/punk rock style of song, I was able to show my culture by expressing the type of music I listen to. The subject matter of the song being based on climate change is a very big issue around the world and has become a very millennial/ Generation Z issue which is my culture. [APPENDIX 3]

Although my original goal was to write a song about climate change, after coronavirus happened, I slightly changed my goal and incorporated this into the song because it was very topical globally. I also found it interesting the effect of coronavirus on the environment when people were stuck at home and there was less traffic and pollution in the world.

ii. identification of prior learning and subject-specific knowledge relevant to the project

When I was about 8, I had a few guitar lessons however I never got beyond very basic stages and then I lost interest. I was basically starting from scratch with guitar for this project but since I could still remember how to read some forms of guitar music, it was easy for me to start again by learning some simple guitar TABs (or tablature) which is a way of writing music especially for guitar and doesn’t require you to know how to learn how to read normal music.

I had no prior knowledge of song writing although I did use some knowledge of the structure of songs that I like to help me write mine. I knew that good songs have very catchy lines within the chorus to make it a very repeatable and popular song. As I have gotten older, I have become really interested in listening to lots of different types of music and have friends who play in bands. Some of the music I listen to has good guitar parts and it reignited my interest in the instrument.

I did have some prior knowledge of the effect humans had on the environment as I completed an assignment on this for Religious Education. Also, in Maths we studied global warming and the effect that levels of carbon dioxide had on the environment. This helped me to identify which issues I wanted to highlight in my song, for example the effects of rising CO2 levels and rising temperatures, As explained above, my basic knowledge of guitar helped me to write simple music for my song and my general music knowledge helped me to create a song with a chorus and catchy lyrics.

iii. demonstration of research skills.

When I started the project, I didn’t really know what I should research to assist. I ended up doing online research mostly, especially for simple ways to learn the guitar, as well as the best way to write a song. (Learn Music Theory in Half an Hour, 2019; chordify.net, 2019; Guitar Unleashed, 2011; imusic school, 2019; My Song Coach, n.d.; Tutorials, W, 2012; Ultimate-guitar.com, 2019). My primary sources were friends who are good musicians and play in amateur bands. (Tan C, 2020 and McGarry J, 2020). I asked them about the ways in which they create and produce music and the most effective ways to do it. They were excellent sources as they have actually written songs and also in the style of music which I enjoy and that I wanted my project to be on. They also gave me good advice on how a beginner could learn the guitar and write a simple song. These students have been learning instruments and been participating in music theory class for the majority of their schooling. Though it would have been better to ask someone more experienced in the music industry as I was not able to easily get in contact with anyone like this, I used a resource that I had good frequent access to.

The websites that I viewed really did help me, as did music books from when I learned guitar when I was younger (Williams Jr, C, 2012). The relevancy and how old information is not really a factor in the research of my personal project as music is timeless, however it was still good to find some websites which had up-to-date chords/tabs of different songs that I was able to teach myself.

To add to my prior knowledge of climate change I also researched online (NASA, 2020); (John Hopkins, Coronavirus University, 2020).

At the beginning of the project, I was not very organised with my researching methods. Sometimes I would forget to bookmark websites when looking for information. However, the project taught me to be more mindful of what websites that I visited and if they were relevant and to record the information properly.

Planning:i. developed criteria for the product/outcome

The criteria I came up with were effective and rigorous as they could be measured easily and related to the global context of ‘personal and cultural expression’. [APPENDIX 6]

My criteria [APPENDIX 1]:

1. the quality of the song and how it sounds2. how the song is directed at the intended audience3. whether the song was made without much outside help4. whether awareness was created or the message was communicated effectively.

Criteria 1 relates to how the song was written, and how it was played. If the song has good singing and quality of sound it will rank highly. The complexity of the music itself will also be important – if the song is too simple with very few chords then it will score lower than more complex music. This criteria relates to the global context by relating to the personal expression and the quality of it.

Criteria 2 addresses whether the song would be appreciated by the intended audience for my song which was people around my age around the world. If the song is written in a way that would appeal to a fairly mainstream audience and has catchy lines and is in a style of music that many young people enjoy it will score highly.

Criteria 3 addresses how independent I was in creating the song and whether I had much help with any of it. If the song was done with very little outside help then it would score highly but if I received a lot of help musically then it wouldn’t score as highly.

Criteria 4 is about whether I was able to spread awareness of current issues with the song. If the song contained simple statements which repeated a strong message that the vast majority of people will understand then it would score highly.

To create my criteria I spoke to my friends who create music and discussed the qualities of a good song and how to communicate a message through song.

Originally criteria 3 was to be the amount of listens it would get on SoundCloud, however, I decided that the song is not going to go on SoundCloud as it is not really ready yet and I did not want my vocals to be heard by a wide audience! I decided to change criteria 3 to be how much of the song was made by me independently as this reflects my personal and cultural expression.

ii. plan and record of the development process of the project

My long term planning was by way of the timeline [APPENDIX 2]. This enabled me to see the project as a whole and the things I needed to get done by certain dates. I didn’t end up strictly follow the timeline as I often overestimated the time needed and completed certain tasks before the due dates, but then for other tasks (such as the completion of the song), my dates were pushed back by a few weeks. Ultimately none of this affected the outcome because I was able to complete the project on time.

My timeline was really clear and specific to my project and I had set dates for key tasks such as when I should have learned certain chords and when I should have written the song.

There were some changes made to my timeline, for example I changed the dates in which the song should be completed, and when the report should be completed. This is because I had already started both of these and I realised that I would need more time that originally allocated to complete the song so I was able to cut into some of my report time. [APPENDIX 4]

The biggest change to my project was that I purchased an electric guitar early on which gave me more options on how the product would turn out and gave me many new sounds to work with. [APPENDIX 5] However, this was fairly early on in the project and it was not much of a change due to something negative (like an obstacle) but more of a change of mindset as I could now experiment with different types of music in my learning stage.

iii. demonstration of self-management skills.

At the beginning of the project my self-management skills were quite poor because previously I never really had the need to plan for assignments as they were all quite short. However, with the personal project being such a big task, I had to develop these skills to create a solid plan of criteria I should follow and a good timeline which guided me throughout the project. [APPENDIX 1] [APPENDIX 2]

For the better part of the project I was on top of everything. I had everything done on my timeline give or take a week and I was able to complete the song by the deadline I set myself. However, where I didn’t do so well was during the school holidays. I found it hard to stay motivated and on track and did not always meet the deadlines I set for myself. Then when school went back, and I had other assignments I fell behind sometimes.

My main use of the process journal was to reflect on what I had done and remind me of the tasks I still had to complete. Since this was the first school where I had to provide reflections, it was a new process for me but I became much better at it by the end of the project.

I also realised that my self-management skills had improved because I was able to help a friend who had fallen behind and I directed him towards the correct parts of Managebac and explained how the process journal and To Do list really helps keep you on track. This helped get him back on track and made me realise that my skills had improved enough to be able to help someone else. [APPENDIX 7]

Taking actioni. creation of a product/outcome in response to the goal, global context

and criteria

The process of the creating my product was quite lengthy as it had three parts and it was hard to know where to start. I began listening to lots of music for inspiration and when I liked it, I taught myself to play the song. This gave me many ideas on how my song would go and the way I would like to personally express myself. It also linked to the 1st criteria which mention the complexity and sound of the song. [APPENDIX 1]

Since my global context was ‘personal and cultural expression’, by making a song, I was able to personally express myself. The subject of my song relates to global issues and culture but also relates to Australian Culture as it was written in Australian Punk rock style.

For the topic of music, it is difficult to define what ‘high quality’ is. This is mainly due to the fact that music is extremely subjective and depending on your background, someone’s taste in music can be very different to that of another person. However, personally I believe that this product is of high quality (except the vocals).[APPENDIX 10] Considering that this is my first time creating a song it was a big challenge for me to know what I was doing and how I was to pull it off. Though the song may not have been as complex as I would have liked, it did not need to be. This is because of the type of song it is meant to be, and this form of Australian Punk Rock is not very complex.

ii. demonstration of thinking skills

At the beginning of the project, I already had good critical and creative thinking skills. While I am good at creative subjects like design and media, I am also good at Maths and Science so I have critical thinking skills in a number of areas. My writing skills are not as strong though and in subjects such as English, Indonesian and even the writing sides of other subjects like science practical reports, I tend to not do quite as well. This can be a struggle when it comes to (where we are now) writing the report. However, since my product involved lots of creative thinking, I believe that I have a bit more of an advantage in that side of things.

As this was a very new experience for me, critical thinking had to be used to overcome problems and adapt to new skills and challenges. For example, I had to adapt to the time we were given to complete the project. Though we had nearly a year to complete this project it was much different to usual because there were no classes for it. Though we could have meetings with experienced supervisors if we had any questions. I had to adapt to self-managing, my time which is not a strong skill of mine. [APPENDIX 8]

My strong creative skills were a big factor in helping me create my product. As my product was a song which is classified as a piece of art, using creative thinking was very important. Not only did I have to write the music for the song, but I also had to create lyrics too. [APPENDIX 9]

I used research to help with my thinking, mainly when I was writing the song. By researching different websites and gathering information on writing a song I was able to utilise these skills and help with my product.

The main problems that I had with the project was not knowing where to start. I found it difficult to start learning the guitar and writing the song, however by generating ideas and using websites such as UltimateGuitar.com I was able to learn much easier, and just by fiddling with my guitar I figured out a good way to start.

iii. demonstration of communication and social skills.

At the beginning of the project my communication and social skills were quite good. After starting at a new school and starting a job where I am talking to people all the time (in a supermarket), I have had a good opportunity to improve my social skills in order to connect with people and learn about them. In the project, my main form of communication was with some of my peers who are quite knowledgeable about music making and music theory. Since some of these students play guitar, they were able to help me and give me advice on how I should write my song.

After I was struggling to make a start on the tune of the song I went to them for advice. They told me that for a beginner like me, the simplest way to create a solid song with my skill level is to only use 3 – 4 chords and just repeat them. I took on this advice and used it to create my product. This project not only helped me to grow relationships with these friends, it also taught me the knowledge that certain people around me have.

As explained above my written communication skills are not as strong but by following the structure and the template of the report I think that I was able to effectively communicate my report.

Reflectingi. evaluation of the quality of the product/outcome against your criteria

I am satisfied with my product and I think that I achieved my goal of writing a song that raises awareness for global warming and current issues. I am happy that I managed to pull it off and the quality of the product I managed to achieve when I had only basic guitar knowledge at the start. It has also helped me grow as a learner and be able to plan a long project and reflect on it afterwards. [APPENDIX 1]

When ranked against the criteria I believe that it stands like this:

Criteria 1 I would rank around a 6. This is due to the flow of the song and how it has a very grungy theme to it with a catchy tune. This is exactly what I was going for. The main thing about the song that marks it down is the vocals and lack of complexity and other instruments. It is a simple song with only six chords due to my beginner player status. If I was able to be both a singer and learn to play other instruments (such as drums) as well as incorporate more complex guitar riffs, I would be able to improve the quality of the song.

Criteria 2 I would rank around a 7. The intended audience for this song is people my age around the world. A good grade for this criterion would be if the song is fairly mainstream and catchy and contains lyrics that as many people as possible will understand.

Criteria 3 I would rank at around a 7. I basically taught myself to play the guitar with just some help from some online programs. I did seek advice from friends about simple ways to create songs and with the style of music but I didn’t have any help with the lyrics.

Criteria 4 I would rank at a 6. This is primarily because I addressed a number of important issues in a simple catchy way and in language that most people would understand. I was also able to link the effects of coronavirus on the environment which is a very topical issue. The only downside was that with the style of music I couldn’t cover issues in detail as it is a simple style of music.

ii. reflection on how completing the project has extended your knowledge and understanding of the topic and the global context

Completing the project has extended my knowledge and understanding in playing guitar, writing music and creating a song about climate change and current issues. At the beginning of the project I was very keen to write a song as I had been listening to all different kinds of music and I saw this as an exciting new experience. Although I got the impression from my friends that writing a song was easy, I found it hard as it was new to me and I didn’t know where to start. Now that I have written a song it has made me more passionate about music in general and how it can be used to communicate important messages to a wide audience. [APPENDIX 3]

At the beginning of the project I was unsure as to what the global contexts were, their purpose and how I would be able to relate my project to them. Although I originally thought that the best context for me was the scientific research context due to the climate change topic, when I learned more about the personal project I realised that the context that best fitted my project was the personal and cultural expression context because of the personal issue of writing a song and the links to culture.

iii. reflection on your development as an IB learner through the project

My main strength in this project was my ability to creatively think. This allowed me to create both the tune of the song and the lyrics to fit it quite easily and it did not take as long as I would have thought. However, when it came to other parts of the project such as researching and writing, it was much more difficult for me as my skills were not as strong in these areas.

I feel as if I have developed greatly as an IB learner. My reflections have improved and I am able to use them to identify the things I did well and the things I need to work on next time. I have also developed much better planning and time management skills from having to complete a long term project.

I feel as though my development as a better IB learner will help me in a number of ways. In the short term this can help me be able to complete an assignment/ project of this size as I have got experience (for example the SACE research project). Long term, the skills I have learned from the personal project will help me in work that I may do. Since I am interested in architecture, this project has helped me to be able to plan, research, act and reflect on how I might complete something. [APPENDIX 7]

My goal is To learn to play the guitar and create a song that raises awareness about global warming.

The global context is Personal and cultural expression

I chose this global context because I feel as though writing a song relates well to this global context.

the global context description that best applies to my project is "Students will explore the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic"

This is because I am able to express information about global warming through a song.

My goal is challenging because my ability to play the guitar is not very strong and it is a skill I want to learn. I also would like to raise awareness about global warming as it effects other people not just me.

Today we have a double personal project lesson. I am aiming to complete a timetable of approximate dates as to when I want to complete different tasks. This timetable will change as I discover how easy of challenging different tasks in my personal project are.

APPENDIX 5February 11, 2020 12:53 PMNew Guitar

In the school holidays i got a part time job working at Pasadena Foodland. After getting this job, I worked on average about 4 times a week for a minimum of 3 and a half hours. With the money i got from this job, i purchased myself a new guitar and this one was an electric that is a good size for me. I got my previous guitar for my 7th birthday and have used it on and off since. Until these holidays when I really started playing it. However, this guitar is too small for me now and it was starting to wear out. So I decided to get an electric one. Another positive about purchasing this guitar was that a lot of the music I listen to uses electric guitars, so I will be inclined to practice more often as I will be able to play songs that I listen to mainly because it is extremely satisfying getting a song you love, perfect.

the self-management skills I have demonstrated in personal project are:

- Organisation

-Commitment

- Persistence

- Goal setting

– What did I learn about today?

Today I learnt many different things encompassing many different aspects of the personal project. Today we have had 6 lessons were we are talked to about, the global context and the goal of our personal project, how we are going to plan out our personal project with a time table and what the timetable should include, how we are meant to source information and reference it in our work (mostly just revision, but it was good revision), We also looked at the process journal and what we are going to record in that we also looked at the ATLs and how to incorporate them into the report and journal. Mr Jarvis helped us understand the ATLs and what/how we should use them in our report and process journal and finally Mrs Potter told us about the criteria we are going to use and how they are different from (A) the criteria she will be marking us with and (B) criteria that we traditionally use in assignments and tests.

– What don’t I yet understand?

The personal project day helped me to really understand what i was doing in the personal project. At this stage the only thing I am struggling with is the ATLs as I only started going to an IB school in year 8, they haven't been taught to me since year 6 (or earlier) like some other students in our grade.

– What questions do I have now?

As stated above, I don't really have any questions on much at this stage.

My difficulties with recording the songSince I am a beginner guitar player I have found it difficult to perfect some chords while writing the song. These chords are the BAR chords such as F and B. When recording the song I have learned that in order for it to sound the best, it should all be recorded in one take. However, I have found this difficult to do as i am only a beginner and in order to maintain my playing consistently takes a bit of time.

Another difficulty I have found with recording is that of actually recording the song. I have found this difficult as I do not posses the correct equipment in order to record a song such as a plug in to my computer from my amp. This means that I must record it on my phone or computer. As there in no free music editing software that is any good on a windows PC i have resulted to using Garage band on my phone. And in order to block out background noise, I have put pillows around my phone which will pick up loud noises (such as the music coming out of the Amp). This work around may not be as good as purchasing the equipment, however it does make the quality of sound much better.

I was bale to work around this issue by using pillows as sound-proofing devices Creative thinking - I have used creative thinking by coming up with ways of writing the song (chords)

Past few weeksThe past few weeks of the personal project have been quite productive for me. I have managed to write the entirety of my song from start to finish and I have also made solid progress on the report. Though I was unable to hand up the report to the designated draft due date, I intend on having it finished by the end of the week and if I have any questions i will be able to ask my supervisor for help. The song has turned out as I intended. However the writing of it is quite simple. Since I am still quite an amateur at guitar It is difficult for me to be able to write a song containing more advanced ways of playing guitar. These skills will come as I play guitar more often and for longer. Though I am quite happy with the style that the song is written in as it sounds quite dirty and as if it was recorded in a garage which is what I was going for.

World On FireJack Howard

Verse 1

Coming out

Of my house

For the first time in weeks

I’ve not seen the sun

I can’t believe

I can see clearly

Its nicer this way

Let’s keep it here

It’s better than before

Make sure

It stays like this

The new normal

Chorus

Cause if the worlds on fire

We need to put it out

And thanks to this virus

Which stopped us from going out

Why so little has been done

I don’t know

It really is quite strange

From politicians

To factories

We really need some change

Verse 2

Now the virus

Was a bad thing

Don’t get me wrong

Half a million dead

And rising

It will go on for long

But stop to see

What has been done

What is healing itself

Without humans to

Stop it

From regaining health

Chorus

Cause if the worlds on fire

We need to put it out

And thanks to this virus

Which stopped us from going out

Why so little has been done

I don’t know

It really is quite strange

From politicians

To factories

We really need some change

Verse 3

Now if the world is warming

Then this is our warning

To make some change happen

Before it gets too late

But as the temperature is rising
