Prayer on the Solemnity of Christ the King

Father, all powerful, God of love, you have raised our Lord Jesus Christ from death to life, resplendent in glory as King of creation. As king he claims dominion over all creation, that he may present to you, his almighty Father, an eternal and universal kingdom: a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace.Open our hearts, free all the world to rejoice in his peace,to glory in his justice, to live in his love.Bring all humankind together in Jesus Christ your Son,whose kingdom is with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Origins of The Advent Wreath Advent traditions reflect a spirit of expectation and, therefore, unfold gradually. Probably the most popular tradition today is the lighting of candles on an AdventWreath in both churches and homes. This custom originated among Lutherans inGermany in the 16 century and quickly became popular in other areas. Alongth

with the Christmas tree, it is probably an example of Christianizing practicespopular from pre-Christian times. There had always been a festival of burningspecial light and fire at the end of November and beginning of December inGermanic lands as the darkness of winter becomes more severe. This traditioncontinued into modern times. In the 1500's it took on a distinct Christiansymbolism as the Advent Wreath, first among Lutherans in eastern Germany andthen among all German Protestants and Catholics. This tradition came to Americawith German immigrants. It was popularized among Catholics with the liturgicalmovement in the 1950's.

The Advent Wreath, which may be of any size, is made of evergreens and is placed on a table or suspended fromthe ceiling. There are four candles - one for each week of Advent. After the wreath is blessed on the first Sunday of Advent, a prayer is prayed and a candle lit. This ceremony repeatson each of the following three Sundays. Light increases, pushing out darkness, with another candle lit until all fourare burning. Wreaths have always been symbolic of victory and glory. The basic symbolism of the Advent wreath goes beyondthis. It lies in the tension between darkness and light. It represents the long time when people lived in spiritualdarkness, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the light of the world. Each year in Advent people wait once againin darkness for the coming of the Lord, his historical coming in the mystery of Bethlehem, his final coming at the endof time, and his special coming in every moment of grace. From “Catholic Customs and Traditions” by Greg Dues

How To Make An Advent Wreath Begin with a round piece of Styrofoam, available at craft shops. Cut four evenly-spaced holes into which you willplace the four candles. Use three purple or blue candles and one rose candle (for the third Sunday). You may also adda white candle for Christmas. You’ll find it helpful to place the styrofoam circle on a pizza-pan or round cookie sheetcovered with foil so that you can easily move your wreath to and from the table. Place evergreen branches over thestyrofoam. Encourage the children to participate as they are able, by gathering branches, placing candles and so on.

PrayersAround

theAdventWreath

The Season of Adventbegins next Sunday.

You may wish to set-up an Advent Wreath in your home– a meaningful and beautiful way to remember the truemeaning of Christmas as you prepare to celebrate thatwondrous feast. Below are suggested reflections andprayers for the lighting of a candle each week. You mayalso wish to begin with a verse of “O Come, O Come,Emmanuel!” and to conclude with the Our Father.

The First Week of AdventReflection: Stay awake! Be ready! As Advent begins, the liturgy reminds us that we are also preparing forthe coming of Christ at the end of the world. Wecannot know the time of Christ’s coming, so we shouldlive every day remembering that we will each have togive an account of ourselves. The Lord’s comingshould fill us with joyful hope, for on that day weaponsof war and violence will be beat into instruments ofpeace and justice, and the Lord of love shall reign.

Light one candle.

Scripture: “May the Lord make your love for oneanother and for all people grow more and more. In thisway he will strengthen you and you will be perfect andholy... When our Lord Jesus comes” (1Thes. 3:12-13).

Prayer: Jesus, you are the light of the world. Teach usto leave the darkness behind and to live in your light. Help us not to hurt each other by our words andactions. Make us thoughtful and generous so that wecan be ready to greet you when you come.Response: Come, Lord Jesus!

The Second Week of AdventReflection: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straightthe path! We hear the voice of John the Baptist callingus to prepare our hearts to greet the Lord. “Reformyour lives, the reign of God is at hand,” he says. Inother words, straighten out your crooked ways andmake your rough places smooth. You too are a heraldof God’s reign. Make peace, give comfort, be patient. Cry out with your deeds: “Our God is coming! Preparethe way.”

Light two candles.

Scripture: “May God, the source of all patience andencouragement, enable you to live in perfect harmonywith one another according to the spirit of Christ Jesus,so that with one heart and voice you may glorify God”(Romans 15:5-6).

Prayer: Jesus, you are the light of the world. May thefire of your love burn away our sins. May it help us toprepare the way for you by being kind, forgiving and fair.Response: Come, Lord Jesus!

The Third Week of AdventReflection: Rejoice! Here is your God! As the feast ofChristmas draws closer, we are reminded that the Lordis with us even now. Jesus came to give sight to theblind and life to the dead. Christ’s reign is among usthrough our deeds of love and generosity. Let us notgrow weary, but steady our hearts and rejoice, for theLord is close at hand!

Light three candles including the rose-colored one.

Scripture: “Rejoice in the Lord always! I say it again. Rejoice! Everyone should see how unselfish you are. The Lord is near” (Phil 4:4-5).

Prayer: Jesus, you are the light of the world. May yourlight shine brightly so we can see you everywhere. Helpus to spread your light and joy by giving freely andhappily to all we meet.Response: Come, Lord Jesus!

The Fourth Week of AdventReflection: The angel announces to Mary, “You shallbear a son whose name will be Emmanuel,” whichmeans, “God is with us”. With Mary, we are called to beChrist bearers. With her we wonder, “How can this be?” As Christmas draws near, let us open our hearts in trustto the power of the Holy Spirit who comes upon us. Letus join Mary in saying, “Be it done unto me according toyour will.”

Light all four candles.

Scripture: “Blessed are you among women, andblessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus... Blessed isshe who trusted that the Lord’s words to her would befulfilled” (Luke 1:42, 45).

Prayer: Jesus, you are the light of the world. Yet youwere born in the darkness of night, in a cold stable withonly the animals to warm you. Let the light of your loveshine on us so we can see you today in all the helplesschildren, who have no home. Teach us to love you inthem.Response: Come, Lord Jesus!
