Instead of the traditional roasted turkey, deep fry it for a new twist. If you want to switch it up Eastern Shore style, serve goose or pheasant in-stead. Support the local waterman and serve fresh seafood to compliment your meal. Add oyster stuf ng, a festive dessert such as apple dumplings, and you’re all set! Hoff man 411 A special Meet Your Neighbor...Miracles, big and small, happen all around us every day. Most of us, me included, are so wrapped up in the “daily grind” that many of these miracles go unnoticed. I’m extremely guilty of burying myself in the day-to-day “junk.” Ever since Jacob passed, it’s been my way of keeping my mind occupied. Just recently, though, a series of miracles happened that I just cannot ignore and that I want to share with you. I began brainstorming for an idea for a BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL, GIVE LOCAL event. How could the Shore Update further help local businesses and members of our community? How could we continue to reach out to the community? Th en “Christmas by the Bay” was conceived. Th e concept behind Christmas by the Bay involves getting area businesses to off er local residents attractive deals on gift cards. For example, the Jetty is off ering buy one $25 gift card and get an additional $10 free. We knew this would be a great opportunity for us to help businesses gain new customers and to solidify the loyalty of the current customer base while helping residents ease the dollar crunch. So, with one fell swoop, we had covered BUY LOCAL and SHOP LOCAL. Now what about GIVE LOCAL? Th en the string of miracles began to unwind. Th e Schwink family emailed us about getting some press for a toy drive they were organiz-ing in honor of their son Michael, who died aft er a hard-fought battle with melanoma. Touched by their story and making an obvious connection with their plight, we ran their release immediately. I wanted to do more…but what? Th en we came up with the idea of holding an event to culminate the gift card extravaganza. People could pick up their gift cards and enjoy a community Christmas celebration. We decided to make it a family celebration with admission being a toy for the Schwinky Toy Drive. At the same time, Bobbie Bell from Feed-A-Family emailed us about some press...which led to a feature article...which led to the idea of the Shore Update donating one canned good for every toy donated. Th e Grasonville Senior Center, Oh My! Chocolate and Ramon Matheu came on board quickly. Bingo! Th e event was taking shape. But where? Th en Tammy Harper of Kentmorr Restaurant emailed us about starting an advertising campaign. We immediately knew this would be the perfect place for our event as the Harper’s have been so involved and supportive of not only our com-munity, but of us, over the years. Just as we thought, Tammy embraced the idea whole-heartedly. She off ered to contact the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department about bringing Santa and his house and suggested having an Adopt-A-Bear tree at the event to keep the giving going. Without hesitation, she had the entire venue covered. So that aft ernoon, I called Pat Schwink, Michael’s mom, to let her know about our plans. She wasn’t able to talk for long and called me later to reconnect. Recognizing me from articles I used to write about the boys and then Jacob’s ordeal, we spent quite a while on the phone. Listening to stories about Michael, I could hear the inconsolable pain in her voice. I wanted to help, but knew there was nothing I could say even though I had shared a similar pain losing my son. I knew life would never be the same again and the pain doesn’t “get better with time,” but you do in fact learn how to live again. It’s a slow process, but it is possible. One day at a time becomes the daily mantra. When our community hugged us (and hugged us again and again), I felt the greatest sense of gratitude and support. Th is community celebration was my way of hugging Pat. As her story unfolded over the phone, I learned that Michael was a volun-teer at the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department. MIRACLE. He used to work at Kentmorr. MIRACLE. He loved to ride the truck as Santa. MIRACLE. Tammy and Dave are honorary members of the fi re department. MIRACLE. Becky Groff of Inspired Events and my angel during Jacob’s plight said, “Sign me up to help…whatever you need.” MIRACLE. I didn’t even get the word “Help” out of my mouth and all the teenage girls at my tutorial hugged me and asked what they could do. MIRACLE. Th e tentacles that began weaving through this event and propelling it into motion were truly astounding. Christmas by the Bay, a fi rst annual event, will be held on Th ursday, December 1st at Kentmorr from 5-9 p.m. For more information, contact the Shore Update’s offi ce at 410-827-9312. I hope you stop by... and experience the miracle.

Until next time,CheriShore Update owner and team member

Centreville Library Rain GardenBy: Rachel Melvin, Horticulture Educator and Master Gardener Coordinator with University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County

A wet fall helps the Queen Anne’s County Centreville Branch Library rain garden grow. The University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County Master Gardener Volunteers help take care of the rain garden on the third Thursday every month from March to November. This rain garden plays an important role in diverting rain water from impervious surfaces such as the parking lot and roof into the rain garden insuring that the rain water is used in the best possible way. As storm water runoff passes through the rain garden physical and biological process let the native plants in the rain garden use the water for growth and absorption to soil particles remove pollutants and nutri-ents from the storm water runoff. These processes are vital to protecting our water supply by diverting potentially harmful nutrients from entering the Cor-sica River Watershed. Plants native to the North Eastern United States are used in the rain garden because they are better adapted to our environment, they can tolerate heavy rain storms and the unforgiving summer droughts that can often be found in Maryland. Additionally, many of our wildlife depend on these plants for various life stages. The University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County Master Gardener Volunteers have partnered with the Queen Anne’s County Department of Public Works and the Queen Anne’s County Centreville Branch Library, to maintain the garden by lending a hand to keep the garden blooming and worry free throughout those hot summer months for library goers. For more information contact Rachel Melvin, Horticulture Educator with University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County at (410)758-0166 or at [email protected] . Also check out the Univer-sity of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County website at http://queenannes.umd.edu, for more tips on growing great gardens.

RAMON MATHEU…A LOCAL ARTIST ARTIST WITH AN EXCEPTIONAL TALENTArt in today’s digital world can sometimes get blurred between what is real and what is done with technology. Some shy away from this new medium, but one person that truly does not, is local digital ne artist Ramon Matheu. Ramon grew up in Salisbury and went to college in Fayetteville, North Carolina to study print making and de-sign. After school, he pursued art studies further by attending the Art Institute of Philadelphia and graduating in 1989 with a degree in Specialized Technology. Around that time, he began thinking. “How could I make money doing this?” He spent the next 15 to 16 years working in Washington DC doing commercial advertising, developing portfo-lios, and other similar work. More recently, his attention turned to digital media work and his desire to devote more time to a new art form. When Ramon is asked how to describe his artwork, the answer is simple, yet complex. Each of his artistic pieces is created from an original idea that in the end becomes a digital illustration. “Photography is a reference,” he says. His hand-drawn illustrations are created using a Wacom pen and tablet, a Mac computer, a monitor, and Adobe illustration software. Ramon starts off with a small thumbnail sketch. Once the nal design has been set, he uses the digital pen tablet to transfer the work to a 24” monitor, where he uses graphic illustration software to create the nal piece. The art can be enlarged to almost any size without the work being disrupted or distorted. The combination of artistic skills and technology produces amazing art of local icons such as crabs and the Bay Bridge. He also is inspired by nature and wildlife, using a combination of sharp black outlines and bright colors to put a fun spin on his illustrations. When asked who in uences his current style, names such as Peter Max, Romero Britto and Keith Haring come to mind. Wanting to share his art and his distinct artistic techniques, Ramon can be found at community events, including this year’s Taste of Kent Narrows. He loves to meet the public and to show them his unique take on Pop Art, building on the tradi-tions of the masters of the genre from the 1960s and 1970s. His work is prominently displayed at Island Arts in downtown Stevensville, an arts store in the Baltimore suburb of Canton, and two other locations in Annapolis. Regarding the future, Ramon says, “I want this to be more of a full-time op-eration for me. The hard part is just getting there.” He hopes to have a studio one day. He also is thankful to his family and others who are supportive of his work. “The many compliments I’ve received and the interest in my art form help me keep going.” Ramon resides on Kent Island with his wife and two daughters. For more in-formation on Ramon’s outstanding work and events where he will be displaying his art and to view or purchase his art, visit his website www.ramonmatheu.com. You can also friend him on Facebook at facebook.com/pages/RamonMatheu.com or send an email to [email protected].

“What is your favorite thing about Fall? ”

Ted Smith, assistant manager with Ace Hardware in Stevensville, says the best thing about the fall season is football. A Browns fan, he enjoys watching the games and getting involved with his favorite team from the Midwest. Ted has been with Ace since 1997, and prior to serving the public in Stevensville, he served his country in the Navy, which took him to Hawaii and other locations all over the world.

Andy Kent and Jessica Pryor of the Dominos team in Stevensville, enjoy a variety of as-pects of the fall season. Andy enjoys a good slice of pumpkin pie during Thanksgiving, but especially enjoys the thrill of hunting season. Andy is manager of the Stevensville location, in addition to owning other Dominos locations in Centreville, Denton, and the surrounding area. Jessica has been with Dominos at the Stevensville location for the last three months, and came to the company 6 - 7 years ago. Together they look forward to satisfying the needs of their hungry customers as the fall season continues.

pslesAininaStaTonese

Cindy Grif n, owner of Thompson Creek Liquors in Stevensville, looks forward to the fall season because she knows that time well-spent with friends dur-ing Thanksgiving and Christmas, is right around the corner. She is also excited about getting her replace up and run-ning for another year. She hopes her cus-tomers have a great fall season, thanks them for their patronage for the last 13 years at her Stevensville location, and for the last 20 years at their Chester location.

TeHthBrafrsiinNlo

The hard working team at Quiznos in Stevensville, (from left to right) Josh Turner, Heidi Moniem, and manager Tommy Councillor, all chimed in with various answers. They enjoy the change in the weather, especially in the color of the leaves. Tommy particularly likes to watch football and gets caught up in the excitement that it brings, knowing that the Super Bowl is on its way. He has been the manager there for the past year, enjoys the team he works with, and looks forward to getting to know his customers better.

Paul Lombardo, manager of Bike Doctor in Stevensville, enjoys fall for a few reasons. There is more time to be spent outside now that the temperatures are cooler and the fall climate is more inviting. He also adds that there seems to be less beach traf c. Hav-ing been with the store since its inception 10 years ago, he is looking forward to continuing to serve the public with their biking needs.

First Class Sergeant Shawn Cannon, age 37 and second from left, has served his country for the last 18 years. He is currently stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO. Enlisting in June 1993 with the Marine Corps, he spent six years as a tank crewman and left the Corps in 1999. In November of that same year, he joined the Army and was sent to Bosnia in the summer of 2000. From there, he served three tours in Iraq: the rst from 2003 to 2004, the second from 2005 to 2006, and the third from 2006 to 2009. During his second deployment to Iraq, on October 23, 2005, his life was changed forever when an IED destroyed the HumVee he and his fellow soldiers were in. He suffered damage to his left hand and various shrapnel wounds. He was then taken back to the States to rehabilitate at Walter Reed, where in 2007, he began work-ing with the Wounded Warriors program. Married for the past 17 years, Shawn says that he can retire from the military in two to three years, but may stay in, “The Army is a good career path.” He is also very thankful for those involved with the Wounded Warriors Weekend. Shawn says, “It’s a small community coming together.” We thank Shawn for his service to our nation, and remember this Veteran’s Day what he and his fellow soldiers do every day to secure our freedom.

Diane May is what you might call as a “career” soldier. She enlisted in the Army in 1985 as a military police soldier and worked her way up the military ladder holding every of ce in the tier of rank in her area. In 1996, she joined the Reserves, start-ing out as a First Sergeant, then moving on to Senior Instructor, then Command Sergeant Major. She was deployed with the Re-serves to Iraq in 2003 and was stationed there until 2004. Dur-ing her second deployment to Iraq from 2006 to 2008, she was injured on a non-combat basis. While helping boost her team’s

morale with various sports activities at Camp Bucca (located south of Baghdad near Basra), Diane’s wrist was broken in 14 different places. She was sent to Walter Reed, where she was in rehab for the next 1 ½ years. She is currently stationed in Fort Meade, MD. She is now with the Retired Reserves, a military position that offers individuals the choice to further serve their country or stay retired in the military. Through the Wounded Warriors Weekend, she is looking forward to a wonderful weekend of rest and camaraderie with her fellow soldiers. Diane says, “It’s one of the most wonderful things I’ve participated in, and these guys [that attend and help co-ordinate the weekend], just get it. It’s truly an unspoken bond that occurs.” We thank Diane for her great service to her country over so many years, and remember her and her fellow soldiers and the sacri ces they made this Veteran’s Day.

Combat Wounded Veterans Set to Enjoy 5th Annual Waterfowl Weekend

Eastern Shore American Legion Post Will Welcome Vets November 10-13

For the fth consecutive year, American Legion Jeff Davis Post #18 in Centreville, Maryland will welcome combat wounded veterans from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore for four days of “Hunting, Freedom and Honor.” The goal of the annual event is to give combat wounded veterans the oppor-tunity to put aside their physical limitations and enjoy a rewarding weekend of hunt-ing, camaraderie with other veterans, and appreciation for their service to our nation. In keeping with this year’s theme, “Pass it On,” seasoned veterans from the American Legion will serve the younger guest veterans, accompanying them to scheduled ac-tivities and honoring them and their families for their sacri ce and service. Members of the Waterfowl Weekend Committee will each host a guest veteran in their home for the weekend. On Thursday, November 10, at 8:00 a.m.., the guest veterans will Arrive at Post 18 for a welcome and orientation on all the events for the next four days, hous-ing assignments, and meet and greet with the Members of the Waterfowl Weekend Committee. They will then be transported to Schrader’s Bridgetown Manor and each soldier is awarded a new 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun to use and keep as their own. They will then participate in a round of sporting clay shooting with a team of other veterans followed by a luncheon. Immediately after lunch they participate in a practice released duck round. Then the soldiers will get settled in to their housing assignments’ and have some down time before attending a private dinner with the Members of the Waterfowl Weekend Committee at Symphony Village. Dinner will be graciously served by the Symphony Village Outreach committee. On Friday November 11 at 11:00 a.m. the guest veterans participate in and will be honored at a Veterans Day Ceremony at the nation’s oldest operating court-house, located in downtown Centreville, Maryland. This ceremony is open to all the public and a great opportunity to Honor all those who have served to protect our Na-tion. That evening, guest veterans will join legion members for fellowship at a casual dinner hosted by American Legion Jeff Davis Post #18 and open to the public. Early on Saturday, guest veterans will go duck hunting at Trappe Impound-ment and Robins Marsh, allowing many a morning of rare freedom from physical limitations caused by combat

wounds and the hard work of medical treatment and rehabilitation. Following the hunt, Easton VFW Post 5118 will serve the guest veterans a complimentary brunch. The guest veterans will then be transported to their host homes for an afternoon of rest. A banquet at American Legion Post #18 in Centreville on Saturday evening will honor the guest veterans. Of cials will make each a lifetime legion member and an honorary Centreville town citizen. Guest veterans also will receive nancial gifts so that they and their families can reunite and celebrate together during the Christmas holiday season. On Sunday morning, November 13, American Legion Post #18 will provide a send-off breakfast before the veterans are transported back to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. For more information about Waterfowl Weekend, or to make a donation to support this annual event, call Bob O’Connor at 410-808-8514.

If you and your guests like the payout, which we’re sure you will, we cut checks on the spot. As the host, you receive an addi-tional 10% for the sales made from the night of your party. If anyone signs up the night of your party to host a future event, you receive 3% of the sales made at their party!
