Between 1939 and 1941, Allenrecorded again with Jelly Roll Mortonand with Lionel Hampton, Ida Cox,Sidney Bechet, James P. Johnson, ZuttySingleton and many others. He left theRussell/Armstrong organization in 1940and began leading his own small group.which included his old friend J.C.Higginbotham on trombone andEdmond Hall on clarinet. The bandplayed an up-to-date swing style(eventually tending towards a “jump”sound) and Allen’s own playingcontinued to move forward. Thoughthe personnel changed several time, theband played successful engagements inBoston , Chicago and San Francisco aswell as New York.

In New York City during the 1950s,Allen led bands at the StuyvesantCasino, the Central Plaza, Lou Terassi’sand finally settled in for a long run at theMetropole. He appeared with VicDickenson, Coleman Hawkins, Pee WeeRussell, Jo Jones and others on the TVspecial “The Sound of Jazz” in 1957and toured Europe with Kid Ory’sCreole Jazz Band in 1959. He alsorecorded two sessions with Ory forVerve. It might seem that Allen’smodernistic approach would haveclashed with Ory’s ultratraditionalsound. However, the juxtaposition ofstyles produced a wonderful contrastthat is a joy to hear on both the studiorecordings and the live performances.

In the 1960s, Allen reduced the sizeof his own band to a quartet — justtrumpet and vocals with rhythm. Theyplayed extensively at the London Housein Chicago, the Theatrical Grill inCleveland and the Metropole and BlueSpruce Inn in New York. He also touredEngland as a soloist in 1964, 1966 and1967. Allen was seriously ill withpancreatic cancer during the last tourand he passed away on Apr. 17, 1967.

From the mid-’50s on, recordings byAllen’s nephew Alvin Alcorn and othersshow that Allen’s influence waswidespread. Henry Red Allen Jr. is stillone of the most admired and influentialtrumpeters in the history of jazz. Hisunlimited creativity, daring innovationand spirited approach to the trumpetwill continue to inspire generations ofhornmen as long as jazz is played.

The Luis Russell Orchestra was amusical home to Red Allen for nearlyfour years. Between 1929 and 1931Russell’s ensemble made a number ofoutstanding records. Sides such as“Panama” and “Ease On Down” showwhy the orchestra was considered to bethe hottest in New York. Allen’scontributions — daredevil phrasing anda seemingly endless capacity toimprovise and inspire — are reasonenough to own the entire collection ofthese recordings.

During his stay with Russell, Allenalso recorded with Jelly Roll Morton,Fats Waller, King Oliver and DonRedman, plus several sessions with hisown group, billed as “Henry Allen Jr.and his New York Orchestra.” Thiscombination, comprised of Luis Russellsidemen, recorded several classics like“Swing Out” and “Patrol Wagon Blues.”But a series of records dating from 1932are often cited as some of Allen’s bestrecorded work. The band that madethese dates was called the Rhythmakersand it was strictly a recording group.Though the personnel changed fromsession to session, Allen playeddazzlingly brilliant trumpet on everyside. He sounds particularly inspiredwhen paired with the gritty clarinet andtenor sax of Pee Wee Russell. Allenand Russell were lifelong friends andthat fact is clearly evident from theirinteraction on the Rhythmakers records. Each exhibits an uncanny sense oftelepathy for what the other is about toplay and they are both quick to react toa particularly attractive phrase. Allen’s

biographer, John Chilton, describes thetrumpeter’s playing from this period as“amazingly original legato phrases thatwere improvised in a way that crossedand re-crossed the bar lines, withoutlosing the original pulse…clusters ofnotes that seemed to hover over themeter, but …resolved with emphatic, contrasting on-the-beat figures…he flewwithout a compass yet never got lost.”

Allen left Russell in 1933 to joinFletcher Henderson’s Orchestra. Therehe was featured alongside the titan ofthe tenor saxophone, Coleman Hawkins.Records such as “Queer Notions”confirm Hawkins’ status as the pre-eminent saxophonist of the era, whileAllen explores the ultramodern melodicand harmonic structures without a traceof reluctance. In 1933, Allen andHawkins recorded with an orchestra ledby Horace Henderson (Fletcher’syounger brother, a superb pianist andarranger). These recordings swing evenmore than the sides with the elderHenderson. Allen’s trumpet and vocals

and Hawkins’ sax are heard to goodadvantage on every side. They alsoorganized a session that utilized someof the top musicians in New York andthe results were issued as the “Allen-Hawkins Orchestra.”

When Hawkins left the HendersonOrchestra, he was replaced first by avirtual unknown, Lester Young, andfinally by a saxophonist with a similarstyle to Hawkins’, Ben Webster. Allenhimself moved on in 1934 to join theMills Blue Rhythm Band. Though theMBRB recordings are not on a musicallevel with the Russell or Hendersonorchestras, they still contain thrillingexamples of Allen’s trumpet playing.

By 1934, the Victor recordings bypianist/vocalist Fats Waller were sellingin unbelievable quantities. Competinglabels engaged Wingy Manone, PutneyDandridge, Bob Howard and Red Allen, among others, to record similar materialin loose jam session formats. Between1934 and 1937, Allen, accompanied bysome of the best hot musicians in NewYork, recorded masterpieces such as“I’ll Never Say Never Again Again,”“Body and Soul” and “On TreasureIsland.” Each side featured hissupremely inventive trumpet playingand his uniquely-phrased singing. Thesessions continued even after Allenrejoined Luis Russell’s Orchestra, whichhad become the backup for LouisArmstrong. The freedom of the small-band recording sessions must have beenstimulating after playing the same big-band arrangements night after night withRussell. Also, though Allen had plentyof chances to blow during the concerts,he was not allocated any solo space onArmstrong’s records. No wonder Allensounds so inspired on the recordings byhis own band!
