Mission Statement:

“The Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce works to represent and advance the Oak Lawn business com-

munity, striving with constant integrity, fairness and cooperation to promote and improve the eco-

nomic atmosphere, business climate and image of Oak Lawn.”

During October 2016 the Cook County Board of Commissioners

passed 2 ordinances that will affect many businesses in Cook Coun-

ty. These ordinances are the unfunded paid sick leave mandate and

the minimum wage ordinance.

These ordinances will have the effect of increasing the price of

goods and services for consumers due to the increase operating

costs of Cook County businesses.

With the high labor rate and mandatory unfunded paid sick leave

ordinance Cook County businesses will struggle to compete with

businesses in the collar counties of Will, DuPage, and Lake County.

The initial minimum wage will go from $8.25 an hour to $10.00 per

hour. That’s a 21% labor rate increase that would go into effect on

July, 1, 2017. By July 1, 2020 that rate is $13.00 as proposed by the

ordinance. Or an increase of 57.5%.

Fall is here, although we are still enjoying some

good weather. And the holidays are soon ap-

proaching! Now is an exciting time to be part of

the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce. We are

377 members strong and growing each month.

Our organization is dedicated to promoting and

supporting the Oak Lawn business community.

The street light pole banners are up! Development of our new

website is well underway, which will provide each member a sep-

arate customizable page. Committee volunteers are working dili-

gently in preparation of “Shop Oak Lawn” on Small Business Sat-

urday, which is the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This event coin-

cides with the village of Oak Lawn “Santa on the Green”. Free

trolley rides will be provided with stops to various Oak Lawn lo-

cations. There will be Santa Claus and entertainment on the Vil-

lage Green, food and kid’s activities at the Metra Station, a scav-

enger hunt and a vendor fair at the Oak Lawn Library. This event

will provide a fun time for all to shop locally.

There are still plenty of events left this year in which our members

can enjoy and participate, including Business After Hours events

and our regular monthly luncheons. Please review our news blast

emails and check the events calendar on the Chamber website. I

encourage each member to join us at the many opportunities the

Chamber offers. The more you participate, the more you benefit!
