Fruit of the month...Fig

Figs are the fruit of the ficus tree, which is part of the mulberry family (Moraceae). Figs have a unique, sweet taste, soft and chewy texture and are littered with slightly crunchy, edible seeds. Fresh figs are delicate and perishable, so are often dried to preserve them. This produces a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed all year round. There are multiple varieties of fig, all of which vary widely in colour and texture. Their unique feature is a little bud-like opening called an ostiole at the top that helps the fruit develop. Their natural sweetness meant that, before the days of refined sugars, they were often used as a sweetener. Figs are native to the Middle East and Mediterranean and were held in such high regard by the Greeks that laws were once created to prevent their export. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_fig

The Health Benefits of Figs

Enhance Digestive Health - Figs relieve constipation and improve the overall digestive health. Soak 2-3 figs in water overnight and consume them with honey the next morning, and you can bid goodbye to your constipation woes. The fiber in figs is great for digestion and soothes the entire digestive system.

Strengthen Bones - Figs contain calcium, potassium and magnesium, all of which aid bone health. Figs improve bone density and decrease the breakdown of bones, which begins as you age. Calcium is crucial to maintaining healthy bones and figs are one of the best sources of it.

Regulate High Blood Pressure - Studies show that including figs in your daily diet helps to lower blood pressure. Apart from potassium, the omega - 3’s and omega - 6’s in figs also help in maintaining blood pressure.

A good source of energy - Adding figs to your diet is a sure way to increase your energy levels. The carbohydrates and sugar present in figs increase the percentage of energy in your body. www.facty.com/figs/health-benefits

Fresh Fig and Avocado Grilled Cheese This grilled cheese sandwich filled with avocado, spinach, and a touch of sweetness from fresh figs is pure deliciousness.

Ingredients

2 slices sourdough bread

1-2 fresh figs, sliced

1/2 large avocado, peeled, pitted, and sliced

1/4 cup fresh baby spinach leaves

Favorite cheese (white cheddar works well or dairy-free)

1 tablespoon of butter

Instructions 1. Assemble the sandwich with avocado slices, figs, and spinach on the bottom piece of bread. Cover with cheese and then the top piece of bread. 2. Meanwhile, melt the butter over medium heat in a skillet. Place the sandwich into the butter and cover the pan. Cook until bottom piece of bread is toasted and then flip. Cook until cheese has melted and other piece of bread is toasty. Cut in half and enjoy! Source:https://www.yummymummykitchen.com/2016/08/20-amazing-fig-recipes.html
