Cover Story

Dear Residents & Tenants,

The end of the year is closing in fast so it’s a good time to sit back and reflect on what’s happened…

2010 has been a special year for Shanghai, without a doubt … But 2010 was even more important for Shanghai Centre as we celebrated our 20th Anniversary! Let’s quickly recap some of the highlights from this year’s celebration.

More than 100 local and international VIP guests were in attendance to kick off the anniversary year with a Grand Openings Ceremony at the Exhibition Plaza. The event was followed by a fabulous gala dinner, hosted by The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai. We also enjoyed a spectacular laser-show performance, lighting up Exhibition Plaza for six nights…At the Atrium, we welcomed over 80 real estate professionals for an Appreciation Luncheon…More than 120 residents and tenants joined in for a special Boat Cruise on the Huangpu River…The Sunday Farmer’s market was a big hit with a parade from the SCIS Marching Band…Jazz fans were on cloud nine with the star-studded shows during the JZ Music Festival, hosted at the Shanghai Centre Theatre …Office tenants and local residents were invited to enjoy movie screenings in our Theatre ...Even Short Term Residents got to join in the celebrations with a 20% discount on standard rates during the Anniversary weekend (a promotion we will continue on every 20th of each month during the whole next year!)

Aside from all the festivities for our anniversary, we finished another major project: a new visual identity for Shanghai Centre. Our 8 year-old logo was updated and replaced by a new, modern design, with a vibrant new color-scheme. The new design is now prominently displayed on our building columns facing Nanjing Road and can be seen on our advertising campaigns and website.

As you can see, much has happened over the past year, and we have a lot more in store for 2011! We’ll keep you posted!

I wish all of you and your families a great holiday season!

上海商城ニュース While many people may be headed home or to some exotic location this holiday season,

those of us who choose to spend our Christmas season here in Shanghai have just as much to celebrate. Every year, the city seems to make more of an effort to put on its best Christmas cheer for the foreign population, lining the streets with festive lights, smiling snowmen and sparkling Christmas trees. By the time December rolls around, Nanjing Xi Lu looks almost as Christmasy as Rockefeller Center. All that’s missing is an outdoor ice skating rink in front of Shanghai Centre!

These days, Shanghai has pretty much everything you need to create the perfect holiday atmosphere, from authentic Christmas trees to holiday decorations, a great selection of gifts, and all your favorite Christmas treats, like tender ham, juicy turkey and delicious homemade cakes. And the best part is that you can get most of it without ever leaving Shanghai Centre. Whether you plan to cook a splendid holiday meal at home with the family, go out and enjoy a bountiful Christmas buffet served up by the dynamic duo, Chefs Roy and Gianluca, at The Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel's Tables and Palladio Restaurants, or have our chef prepare something special and deliver it straight to your dining room table, there are plenty of great choices. Plus there are fun events for the kids, like The Teddy Bear Tea, where little ones can enjoy

snacks and fun with life-size Teddy Bears, and enjoy storytelling and puppet shows (Dec. 12, The Portman Ritz-Carlton Lobby Lounge, 2pm).

But let’s start with the basics first. Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree… Where to find thee in Shanghai? Considering that China produces almost all of the world’s plastic Christmas trees, you’d expect to find them on every corner come Christmas time. But very few of them actually end up staying in China. Alice Flower at Suite 106 of Shanghai

Centre is one option. Prices range from about 120-500RMB, depending on height. But nothing beats the real thing, and comes December Alice Flower also has real live Christmas trees from knee-high all the way up to the ceiling for about the same price as plastic ones. If you’re looking for stylish and unique Christmas decorations, you might want to check out the home decor store HOLA (1F Zhentong Lu, near Songhu Lu), and the Flower Market in Gubei on Hong Jin Road. Then add a touch of beauty with Christmas flower bouquets and beautiful red poinsettias from Alice Flower to really bring you into the holiday spirit.

Now that the home is decked out for the holidays, how about decking yourself out, as well? Start with a Christmas haircut and a touch of colorful highlights at Toni&Guy, and visit Loro Piana for a very holiday-inspired cashmere sweater and scarf (see the “Retailer” section in this issue for more info). And don’t forget to get the nails done at Fiori. Looking stylish? Check. Next it’s off to buy some gifts.

Let’s start with the kids, and the gift you can never get enough of – books. Chaterhouse has a great selection of titles from the youngest storyteller favorites to teen thrillers/romance like Twilight. This is also a good place to buy a beautiful coffee table book to send to friends back home, and while you’re at it you can pick up some nice Christmas cards here, as well. If you want to send something truly special back home or to friends abroad, Zhang’s Textiles is the

place. Here you can get beautiful authentic antiques dating back to the Qing Dynasty that are surprisingly affordable, and they ship all over the world.

Now, how about that special something for him or her? Start at Miu Miu where you can get a great selection of handbags and women’s fashion accessories that she’s sure to love. Ladies, look no further than Tom Ford for the perfect gift to surprise your man. A few suggestions include the Tom Ford Fragrance for Men and a combo shirt, belt, trousers that are smart enough for work and stylish enough to party.

But for that knock-out gift that will leave ‘em dazzled, head for Buccellati Jewelers for a handmade earrings dripping with diamonds, personalized cufflinks, or a set of matching rings for him and her. This is the place to get the sort of gift that will leave your loved one gaping, and saying “you shouldn’t have”…while thinking inside, “but I’m sure glad that you did!”

Ok, gifts? Sorted. Now it’s time for food & wine. The big question is: eat in or not? Let’s start with a fab meal at home. First stop, City Shop! You’ll need to load up on all the fixings: ham, turkey, cranberry sauce, some good greens for a nice salad, fresh asparagus and most importantly, the perfect bottle of wine. Recommendation? Stick with reds. They go well with the holiday color theme, and pair well with both turkey and ham. Alternate option: champagne. Come to think of it, better get both! Now for the best part – dessert. Dragonboat RaceWith a record number of eight boats and 150 rowers participating, the 2010 Annual Dragonboat Race proved once again to be the most popular Shanghai Centre sports event of the year! And it was a very fast race -- the first-place team came in ten seconds faster than last year’s race! The US Consulate team was again the strongest (that’s three in a row!), although it was very tight this year with only one second to spare over the runner-up, the Shanghai Centre Staff team. The Portman Ritz-Carlton team closed off the top-three. Newcomer AMCHAM showed off its great teamwork by coming in fourth. Cancham & the Canadian Consulate did an admirable job by coming in 5th, less than one second behind AMCHAM. Way to go teams!! Halloween PartyHost of the day, Cheeky the Pirate, had an interesting cast of movie characters visiting Shanghai Centre: Superman, the Adams Family, Pirates of the Caribbean, Minnie Mouse, and many more… There were also fairies, witches, skeletons, princesses, ninjas and even two “real” policemen present at our fun Halloween party. The events team did an excellent job in transforming the Atrium into a spooky place, and the food from the hotel was “scary” good… Plenty of trick-or-treating for this year, kids! Jade Museum TourOur residents can’t get enough of jade! After two coffee-mornings, including a jewelry-making class, this time around it was a visit to the Jade Gallery of the Shanghai Museum. Of course, the tour wouldn’t be same without fabulous guidance from Valery. We certainly have some true jade experts in the building now! Donation to Migrant School ChildrenChristmas is a time of giving, and Shanghai Centre wants to give back to the community… During a short ceremony at the school, the management team has donated computers and IT equipment to the Pu Guang Migrant Children’s School in Pudong. More donations are scheduled over the coming months.
