Dear Friends,
Recently and most assuredly by accident, I was asked to be a member of a writer’s group. Maybe it’s because I read a lot, and the person thought I’d add something by the way of liter-ary criticism. Maybe it’s because I work for an organization that has knowledge of the pub-lishing industry, and the group was hoping I’d have some inside favors to call in. Or, perhaps, and this is a stretch, the invite was a result of the fine writing that goes into this column every other month. Uh, right. But whatever the rea-son, Delia, Mary Jane, Irene, Lucie, Rachel and Carla have welcomed me warmly. And they ex-pect me to contribute. Which means I have to write something. Monthly. What did I sign up to do exactly? The truth is, we all have stories inside of us, waiting to be told. Bruce Coville, children’s book

writer supreme, once said there is only one dif-ference between him, an author, and folks who have ideas for stories: Butt Glue. He said this to a group of 4th graders so he was surely play-ing to their love of potty humor. But he went on to explain that to write, you have to be still for long periods, thinking, writing and rewrit-
ing, even when it becomes painful. Sticking your bottom to a chair may be the go-to trick some writer’s use, but it doesn’t guarantee success. Some just lack the skill required to get those stories out in a coherent, compelling way. We read something that moves us, that says what we’re thinking and feeling, and it seems so simple. But readers—and especially writers—know it’s not just the you-know-what glue that makes an author. In today’s digital world, one could argue we have a proliferation of “authors.” It’s certainly easier to connect writers to readers. Whether it’s blogging, long form writing or seri-als, there’s a virtual space for all kinds of authors. But one thing that this writers group has already taught me is that there is tremendous talent right here in the Midlands of South Carolina. That is one of the reasons we started a local writers collection at our Main Library. It’s small right now, but the goal is to highlight local writers who are either self-published or published by smaller publishing houses. You won’t find Pat Conroy in this collection (search the catalog for the subject South Carolina Fiction) but you will find local writers who have their work in print. We’re proud of the start we’ve made to showcase local talent. Watch for this collection to grow and look for work by an author you may know! If you’re reading this well-crafted letter right now and wondering “How can I get MY work in the library?,” just email [email protected]. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to write but don’t know where to start? We have a long list of books to help with that, too. Or, you can accidentally join a (serious) writers group like I did, surround yourself with amazing and intimidating talent, and get put on the “hot seat” once a month. Now that’s what I call motivation!

About Her | Eastover Branch ManagerDee Robinson is the manager of the Eastover Branch. She works to connect residents in her community with the information and resources they need.
What’s your favorite thing about the library? One of my favorite things about working in the library is interacting with our customers – helping them with their needs; connecting them with books, movies and music; and listening to their stories. What part of the new Eastover location excites you most? The additional space and extended hours are definitely two of the many great things happening with the expansion that excite me. Giving our community more access to the incredible resources available through the public library will be priceless.
I couldn’t live without...My Nook. I am definitely hooked on my NOOK. If you could trade places with one person for the day, who would it be?Michelle Obama. Did you see how many jumping jacks she can do and still have a hand in changing the world?

Eastover Update
The library has received a $50,000 national leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which will keep children reading during the summer. This pilot program will provide tutoring, food and transportation for 30 children in the Eau Claire community. Project Summer Stride will be held in partnership with USC’s Office of Pro-gram Evaluation and the Midlands Reading Consortium of the United Way of the Midlands. This grant was made pos-sible by a national campaign for third-grade level reading, a prediction of success in life.

Laughter and RaindropsDigital Artist Brandon Reese Featured at Main Library
Don’t miss the chance to see artwork by il-lustrator Brandon Reese on display at the Main Library November 1 through Janu-ary 1. Reese’s work has been seen in High-lights, Nick, Nick Jr., The Utne Reader, The Boston Globe, Westchester Magazine, on eeBoo children’s products, and he recently created a mural at the Charlotte Mecklen-burg Library. His works have also graced the covers of albums by Lunch Money, the Jellydots and the Okee Dokee Brothers.
Reese says his inspiration comes from vintage children’s book illustrations, a childlike mindset, and his young son. As a child, he was given blank sheets of paper instead of coloring books by his mother. He and his brother learned to draw on these pages – recreating characters from J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis’ works. Reese says he always knew he would draw or do something creative for a living.

• Don’t start your job search without a plan. Take time to assess where you are, where you want to be, and what you need to do to get you there. Develop a Job action plan that details how you will spend your available hours, leaving time for resume building, networking, volunteering, online learning, job searching, and rest.
• Don’t have the same expectation as when you found your last job. Things have changed! The economy is different and hiring practices have become more competitive and challenging.
• Don’t rely on any one technique to find your next job. Make sure you have many different tools in your job search tool box: job boards, social networks, cold calls, volunteering, recruiters, company websites, news-papers and more.
• Don’t allow yourself to get easily discouraged or panicked. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that as of 2011, more than a quarter (26.7 percent) of successful job searches lasted six months or longer, with about half of those taking more than a year. Be patient!
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The RCPL Job Center at the Main Library is here to help you with print resources, computers, career coaches, classes, interview practice, online.

2013 Friends’Book Sales
Evan Pinson, a junior at Dutch Fork High School, wanted to help set the stage for children’s imaginations to blossom at the library. He involved his scout group in building puppet stages for the North Main and Eastover library locations, and he has plans to build several book bins as well.
About 12 people have already given more than 100 volunteer hours to the project, an effort that will also earn Pinson his Eagle Scout badge. To make the project possible,
Pinson secured donations from LA Marsha Company and Lowe’s.
Interested in volunteering at your library? Call Cathy Dolan at 803-929-3436.

Rosa Lee Cummings is this year’s recipient of the Ethel Bolden Minority Scholarship from the RCPL Foundation, awarded for the third time to honor Ethel Bolden’s many years of service to the Richland County community and its libraries.
The $2,500 scholarship is awarded to Cummings to provide financial support and to en-courage completion of her master of library and information science degree at the Uni-versity of South Carolina.
Cummings began her library career at Beaufort County Library as a Bookmobile librarian, delivering books to the outlying areas of the county where people found it difficult or im-possible to get to the library. She is currently a Technical Services Librarian, responsible for ordering, cataloging and processing all materials for the Beaufort County Library system.
She began working toward her library degree in 2007 and plans to complete her degree this year. Her goal is then to expand Senior Services, establishing a seniors’ board to learn exactly what library services this audience would benefit from, and then begin a major outreach campaign to get more seniors to libraries. Her program would also develop outreach services for homebound customers.
Cummings received her bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentra-tion in psychology in 2005, and an Associate of Arts degree in 2001, both from the Uni-versity of South Carolina Beaufort Campus.
