Stud Prefix Information-What is a Stud prefix? Karl Kilpatrick (Australian National Cavy Council Stud Registrar) I would like to remind people that your stud prefix is for the life of your involvement in the fancy. A stud Prefix IS NOT a Stud Name. You can name your stud whatever you like, but a stud prefix is the name that goes before the name given to any cavy born at your stud. This prefix is registered with the ANCC, hence the application. A prefix is very important in the fancy, as it is how other members in the fancy recognise your cavies - for breeding and showing purposes, as well as writing pedigrees. At this stage in the rules, no one else can use the prefix while you have it registered. Your Stud Prefix can say a lot and I would think carefully about how you want to be seen as a breeder and exhibitor.. Also, as was mentioned some time ago, when choosing a prefix keep it as simple as possible - remember it will be used for things such as writing it on pedigrees and by the Show Secretary who needs to use the FULL name for the records Once a stud prefix is allocated to a cavy, in your stud, that is its name for showing, selling and breeding purposes - it can never be changed. It is a record of that cavy, where it comes from, what stud it was born at and other lineage information that is required on pedigrees. There are certain rules available on the ANCC website about Prefixes, such as the length of a prefix. A Stud prefix with 15 letters is a bit much and won't be approved. Also any similar names to current prefixes registered will not be approved either. Offensive names are a NO GO!. For example, once your Stud Prefix is approved, from the date on the certificate that is sent to you , you will be able to use your prefix exclusively for cavies born at your stud. You cannot change a cavy’s prefix or give it your prefix if it was born outside of your stud. If you had a cavy born at your stud and you registered a prefix "Andino" (which is one of mine) and you then called the cavy "fluffy" then it's full name for life is Andino Fluffy. Andino is the important part of the name as it recognises the breeder. Whether you sell or keep this cavy it MUST carry the prefix of the stud it was born at for life. Also you can apply for more than one stud prefix and, like me, there are several members that have more than one stud prefix for various reasons such as to allocate to different breeds in their shed or because they no longer like their current stud name Whatever the reason, there is no restriction on that. Just some things to keep in mind. I hope this explains our current stud prefix system. The current and updated Stud List is on the ANCC website along with the updated Application Forms and Rules for Stud Prefixes.

http://cavycouncil.org.au/national-stud-list.html Current ANNC Stud Prefix Rules I. Any person who is a financial member of an ANCC affiliated club or affiliated State or Territory council in their state or territory of residence, may register and use a stud prefix. An application form, together with the current registration fee must be sent to the ANCC Stud Registrar. I (a) The prefix will remain registered while the person's membership remains current with a club affiliated to the ANCC in the state or territory of residence. II. A stud prefix may not be used until notification of its registration is received. III. Baby cavies carry the prefix of the stud that is the legal owner of the mother of the litter. IV. Under no circumstances is the name of the cavy to be changed. It must retain its original name given by the breeder, both stud prefix and given name. V. A stud cavy's FULL NAME must be used when shown. VI. A cavy born before the prefix is registered is not entitled to carry that prefix. VII. Any cavy purchased from a source that does not have a registered prefix must NOT carry a stud prefix.

Colour in our Christmas Cavies.

Fun prizes to be had.
