November is Falls Prevention Month!
About Fall Prevention Month
Fall Prevention Month is a campaign that encourages Canadian organizations and
individuals to come together to coordinate fall prevention efforts for a larger impact.
Organizations are participating by planning activities and sharing evidence-based
information on fall prevention
Why do we need Fall Prevention Month?
Older adults are a vital part of families and communities. Falling can lead to depression, mobility problems, loss of
independence and death.
Key statistics in Canada
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults
The average Canadian older adult stays in hospital 10 days longer for falls than for any other cause
Falls in older adults account for $2 billion in direct health care costs annually
Over 1/3 of older adults will be admitted to long-term care after hospitalization for a fall
Falls in older adults are predictable and preventable. There are many organizations and individuals working hard to
increase awareness of the issue and encourage action to prevent falls and injuries from falls.

Why Should You Practice Yoga?
All you really need to begin practicing yoga is your body, your mind, and a bit of curiosity. Many people think that
they need to young and flexible in order to begin yoga, but that's simply not the case. Yoga can help to build
muscle strength and also protect from conditions like arthritis and back pain.
Our Yoga class in Hastings is led by Kim Bright-Wallace (pictured left)
and runs every Wednesday at the Hastings Civic Centre from 1:00
pm—2:00 pm.
She teaches more than just physical postures, she connects the
movement of the body to the rhythm of breath.
Why not give Yoga a try? This class is a pay as you go and very
reasonable with a $4.00 fee per class.

Health & Safety Column
Halloween Driving
In the excitement of trick-or-treating, Halloween is an occasion where most little ghosts and goblins forget about important safety precautions.
For this reason, it essential that motorists are aware of the safety measures that are involved in keeping everyone safe on Halloween night.
On Halloween, it's best to avoid driving in subdivisions during the hours of 6-9 pm when most trick-or-treating takes place.
However if you must get behind the wheel there are several Halloween driving “tricks” to keep everyone safe:
Stay well below the speed limit and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
Refrain from using a cell phone at all costs while driving in neighborhoods. Driving must be your main focus as a little ghost or goblin could pop out from anywhere at any moment
Pay extra attention to what is going around you. Be conscious of sidewalks and roadways and watch for any children darting across the street or in between parked cars.
When pulling in or out of driveways stay alert of your surroundings.
Halloween isn't a night where just the young forget about potentially dangerous situations; many adults attend
costume parties where alcohol is being served but fail to take the necessary precautions to get home safely.
If attending a party with the intention to drink plan ahead, make arrangements to get a ride with a designated
driver or a taxi.
