Marvel Films go diverse as Hollywood roars into NovemberAbout time, Jack

“Welcome to the fray.”

Robert Downey Jr, greeted Chadwick Boseman’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic universe Tuesday at the El Capitan Theater in L.A., where Marvel studios unveiled a slate of movies that will have fanboys psyched until 2019.

Boseman was cast as T’Challa, the ruler of Wakanda and the title superhero of Black Panther. The movie is scheduled for release Nov. 3, 2017, and will be part of Marvel’s “Phase 3” slate beginning with Ant-Man in July.

Introduced in 1966, Black Panther was the first black superhero in comics, and the film – in addition to a female-led Captain Marvel

project in 2018- infuses diversity into Marvel’s lineup of movie characters.

You may remember Chadwick Boseman from this summer’s blockbuster Get On Up and Draft Day.

Sandra Bullock “SPEEDS” into action!

Sandra Bullock should be recruited to help with the Ebola crisis ... because she’s a decisive chick in the face of medical emergencies.

Sandra beat 911 by a mile when an extra on her current movie set

collapsed. It was pretty apparent it was a case of heat stroke ... Sandra is shooing “Our Brand Is Crisis” under the blazing sun in New Orleans.

Sandra took charge ... giving her fallen comrade water and fanning her in a shady place until an ambulance arrived and took the woman to a nearby hospital.

It was also reported that Billy Bob Thornton was nearby and in attendance, but was not- ahem, much help in assisting the distressed person.

Jose Canseco gives us the finger!

Come on, you know I had to say it like that. Former major league slugger Jose Canseco blew his middle finger clear off his hand while cleaning his handgun at home in Las Vegas.

According to his fiancée Leila Knight, he was sitting at a table in their home cleaning the gun when it went off. She said he didn’t know it was loaded—and the shot ripped through the middle finger on his left hand.

Doctors tried to save what’s left of the finger, but the bullet tore through the bottom part and doctors have already said he’ll never have full use of it again. Worst case… it may be amputated.

Jimmy Ray Sorrells

FUN FACT: After a mid-1990s romance with Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock fell in love with his hometown of Austin, Texas, and eventually built a house and even opened a restaurant there.

Chandor Gardens Gift Shop – Treasures Abound

In beautiful, tranquil, Chandor Gardens, located in Weatherford’s historic district, the Chandor mansion houses a wonderful…although very small…gift shop. Sharing a space with staff offices and only measuring about eight foot square, the gift shop at Chandor is a treasure trove of special, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items. From skillfully crafted knit caps, scarves, shawls and potholders

to masterfully painted art works, this little shop is chock full of the work of talented area artists and craftsmen. Each item in the Chandor shop is on consignment from people who

Art

are devoted to their craft. When the shop opened in 2006, only four vendors displayed their works. Today, the tiny space holds examples from more than thirty artists with a wide variety of unique talents.Note cards and postcards of garden vignettes are popular with the visitors that come from around the world to view Douglas Chandor’s magnificent gardens and art studio and want to take a bit of the gardens home

with them. Oil paintings and photography by some of the most talented artists in their field often depict the gardens lush foliage and beautiful architectural features. Even the informative book written by Weatherford resident, Harold Lawrence, titled “Douglas Chandor – An English Artist and His Texas Garden” is on sale for those who are curious about the history of the garden and its creator. But, even if gardens are not your thing, the gift shop holds something for you.

Beautifully handcrafted jewelry, fused glass platters, wine stoppers and serving pieces, soy based candles, furniture, ring holders, soaps, T-shirts and sweatshirts, magnets and key rings, knit items, photographs and

paintings are all available to give as gifts or to keep for your own. Even a few, large, wrought iron trellis’ gracing the gardens are for sale.

The Chandor Garden’s staff is always looking for vendors with special talents to round out their inventory and give guests to the Gardens a special treasure to remind them of their visit. Each year the Gardens host The Spring Fling and The Autumn Art Walk. At each of these events, area artists are encouraged to set up tables throughout the gardens, show off, sell, and sometimes demonstrate the technique used to create their art. If anything is left when the events end, artists can leave works in the gift shop for the staff to sell during the rest of the year.

Strap on your blue suede shoes, pop up your jacket collar and get ready to shake those hips, because the King of Rock-n-Roll is coming to Weatherford, Texas!

That’s right; Donny Edwards is coming to the Texas Opry Theater on New Year’s Day, Thursday, January 1st for a single 6 pm performance of “A True Tribute to Elvis”. This promises to be one heck of a rock-n-roll good time.

Donny Edwards is an international multi award champion Elvis Tribute Artist, who has performed on hit television shows such as NBC’s “Next Best Thing” and “The Young and the Restless.” He has also played with some of Elvis’s original band members such as D. J. Fontana, Elvis’s drummer, and his back up group, The Jordanaires. Recently Donny became the first and only Elvis tribute artist to perform on the Estate of Graceland! Then on January 9-11, Donny will be HEADLINING with The FEVER Band at The South Point Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a long time dream coming true!

“We are going to come to Weatherford and bring back the spirit of Elvis, with his persona, and the atmosphere. That’s the difference between other tribute artists and me. We are very authentic and even sing in Elvis’s original key. And we have a good time doing it,” said Edwards.Edwards said being Elvis has always

come naturally for him and that from an early age people would mistake him for the King.

“My mom said when I was a kid and an Elvis record would come on, I knew how to shake my leg. When I hit my teenage years I started to look more like him and people said, ‘Hey Elvis.’ It’s funny because I was always drawn to it.” He said he was working as a manager at a Target in Houston when he was contacted by a talent scout from Las Vegas. Since then, his career has sky rocketed. Edwards said that, like Elvis, he has one main lady in his life, his wife Donna. He said that they met in Las Vegas in an elevator after one of his performances and they were married in Graceland. “I enjoy the compliments, but much like Elvis, I am very into my wife. Fans are respectful toward me and my wife,” he said. “She gets a lot of compliments and is involved in my career.”

He said also like Elvis, he lives a pretty “rock and roll” lifestyle.“I am pretty much booked until Jan 2015. I get sleep when I can, but it is basically go-go-go. Your body does fully adapt to it. You find that you can sleep better on planes than beds sometimes. However, I always eat right and to keep from gaining weight, I exercise.” He also explained that he still works on his character and as he grows older, he is able to perform the different eras of Elvis’s life. “I am excited to come back to Weatherford, Texas and perform,” he said. “The crowds are enthusiastic, and are an all-around fun crowd.”

He will be performing with special guest Dion Pride (son of Charley Pride). Dion is a committed singer, songwriter, musician and stage performer who seems to be coming into season just in time for a world of new listeners. Today’s fans have shown their hunger for exciting, new music and a memorable live presentation. This is precisely

what Dion delivers. His studio offerings are also solid proof that he is gifted with the tools needed to create and sustain his place in the hearts of the record buying public. Music fans of all types, residing in all regions of the globe have been touched by Dion Pride. Dion connects with crowds of all types and works feverishly to win the same approval ratings and strong reputation his father has enjoyed for years. Adoring Charley fans

have quickly jumped on board with Dion and show no signs of wavering as they help him to also become a mainstay entertainer.

Both of these world renowned entertainers will be fronted by the eight member ultimate Tribute Band FEVER!

800 plus nativity sets display to start December 5th!

Granbury resident, Faye G. Landham has managed to collect 800 nativity sets over a number of years. The sets came from all over the world and were given to

her by her Sunday school students, her friends and her family. A few of them were even made by children in her Sunday school classes. Many of the nativity sets are made from fibers, plants or stones native to the country they came from. Some are made from recycled cold-drink bottles, button covers, cookie cutters, jewelry,

pillows, books, candles, throws, dust pans and more.

Faye’s friends, Linda, Russ, Mary Ann and Frances have helped her with the display of nativity sets over the years. “It’s quite a large project to set up and then re-pack 800 plus nativity sets,” says Faye.

Ms. Landham’s nativity sets will be on display during the 31st Annual Granbury Candlelight Tour at the Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center, 308 W. Pearl Street, Granbury, on December 5th and 6th as well as the 11th thru the 15th.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and Echo Transportation sponsored a day away for 29 children in the Sibling Program at Cook Children’s of Fort Worth. The children were ages 8-12 and each had a brother or sister with an illness or injury that requires frequent hospital visits or stays. These siblings are not just children who have a brother or

sister in the hospital because of a broken leg or something. These are the siblings of children with very serious, even terminal, illnesses –cancer, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, etc. Often, the needs of siblings are set to the side when there is a seriously ill child in the family. extra love and support, a day camp was organized to give the children something fun to take their minds off their ever-present concern for their brother or sister.Because of a generous donation of transportation made by Echo Transportation, Cook’s was able to bring their entire group of siblings. They arrived at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center at 9am on Saturday, October 18. After receiving Fossil Rim water bottles, the group went on a guided tour of the park, ate lunch at the Overlook, took a hike to dig for fossils, and participated in The Lorax, a program put on by Fossil Rim’s education department that focuses on good stewardship of our natural resources. The group headed out around 4pm and all enjoyed their outing away from the hustle and bustle of their every-day lives. It was evident that the children appreciated extensive time with adults as well as the camaraderie shared with other children in a common situation. Big thanks to all who were involved!

The Hutton family has owned and operated the Weatherford Farmers Market on Fort Worth Highway for the last fifteen years. During that time, the market has carried fresh, local, Texas produce as well as a wide variety of locally grown plants and has become a staple in the community.

In Spring the market is ablaze with color when flowering plants line the aisles and colorful hanging baskets sway overhead. As Summer arrives so do succulent Texas grown tomatoes and melons and around the beginning of July the open air market, with its arched adobe façade, lures hundreds of people hungry for Parker County’s famous peaches…which the Hutton’s supply from

their family’s nearby orchards. Fall features pumpkins and gourds of all sizes from West Texas and New Mexico along with smiling scarecrows and an abundance of flavorful canned

goods, jams, jellies and honey. Texas pecans and other nutty treats are also available this time of year. Winter brings a variety of beautiful pine and fir trees ready for Holiday decorating along with firewood for cold Texas nights.

In addition to all of this abundance, the market offers unique crafts and home décor year round. From colorful, handmade, outdoor furniture to beautiful fountains and western themed wall hangings; treasures are around every corner.

Recently added, tucked back in one of the market’s corners, visitors will find a very special clothing store. The Urban Gypsy Boutique, owned and run by Heather, one of the

Hutton family daughters, is a vibrant, trendy, one-stop shop for women looking for great additions to their wardrobe. Inside the small eclectic shop, with walls made

Just outside the front door Adele Rose keeps a display of Arthur Court handmade aluminum serve ware and gift items, including frames and a variety of clever signs to use for home decorating.

With the addition of the Urban Gypsy Boutique to the cornucopia of delights

previously available, the Hutton family can safely say that there really is something for everyone at the Weatherford Farmers Market. Look for Urban Gypsy at the Shop Local Event this month!

Singer/songwriter Phil Hamilton began his musical journey at a young age having grown up in a family with a grandma who sang opera and an aunt who sang country. By the time he reached high school his dedication to music was truly formed and he began playing guitar and hanging out with his good friend Kelly Clarkson, who performed with him at school functions before her American Idol days.

After a stint in college and then as a construction contractor, the pull of music proved to be too strong and Phil left his day job, sold his house, and began the gypsy lifestyle of a musician, never looking back. With every live gig his following grew and he began writing his own songs. “Back then, I hadn’t had enough experiences with love and loss and all the stuff that makes great songs,” says Phil. “I decided to keep practicing my writing and started taking it more seriously, and that’s when things started to take off.” The next thing he knew he was being offered a deal with Winding Road Music to record a full album.

Phil released his first CD, Nothing to Lose, in 2009 which charted two singles

in the Top 15 on the Texas charts. The same year his band was voted one of the top three new country bands in Texas by the listeners of 95.9 The Ranch. From then on it has been a whirlwind of chart-toppers and legendary live shows with his nation of “Philthy” fans continuing to grow daily.

Although Phil spends the majority of his time on the road taking his music to the fans, when he’s at home in Granbury, Texas, he manages to carve out several days a week to spend time in the outdoors. “I live on the road, but I don’t write out on the road. There are too many things going on and it’s too tough for me to put my thoughts down out there. Hunting and the outdoors are my main things…when I’m home, half of the week I’m always in the woods hunting or fishing,” says Phil.

Hamilton’s album “Renegade Rock N’ Roll” was praised as one of the best new albums of 2012 on the Texas/Red Dirt Music scene, yielding a number one single and a top ten single on the Texas Music Chart and Texas Regional Radio Report. Recently, Phil was voted as a finalist for “New Male Vocalist,”

at the Texas Regional Music Awards and his high energy live show has garnered fans from all over Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico. His record, “Live at the Whiskey Girl Saloon,” was recorded at the Fort Worth watering hole one January evening to a sold-out crowd and it captures the true essence of the live music experience. “I was excited to show what we do live,” said Phil, “but my only rule was it had to be real and authentic and 100% LIVE – not re-cut or re-tracked, and it worked. It was just a

phenomenal experience and we captured the music just the way I wanted.”

On September 27th, Phil celebrated his birthday at Doc Possum’s in Granbury to the delight of his local fans and friends. As always, Phil Hamilton remains true to his hometown roots and his commitment to performing his special brand of authentic “Philthy” Texas music.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the café’s menu consists of crowd pleasing favorites like chicken fried steak, hand battered and made from local

beef, served with a generous helping of homemade mashed potatoes or hand-cut French fries and an array of tasty sides. Mark’s smoked bologna, mesquite BBQ with homemade sauce, pulled pork and fried catfish

are also popular lunch and dinner items. “Last time I had the Spam sandwich, yes Spam, it was great!” claimed a recent patron. Standard breakfast fare is elevated to new heights at this marvelous little eatery prompting one diner to comment, “Bacon is good and pancakes made

right, crisp edges and light! The hashbrowns were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside…very tasty.”Homemade pies and cobbler have found their way to the top of the dessert menu at the café.

Customers drive from Weatherford, Aledo, Brock, Springtown and Granbury. Mark says don’t miss Saturday night’s music. He has local bands from the area play during the dinner hour. The small town Texas charm of The Switch Café combined with the Davis family hospitality and their consistently wonderful food make this little

cafe a “must stop” place the next time you find yourself in Cool.I promise you won’t be disappointed when you eat breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Switch Café.

A.J. and Liz Hammond’s first B-B-Q venture began when A.J. built a pit in his backyard in Glen Rose Texas in 1966 and began offering delicious food using the recipes he had learned as a kid in Burnet, Texas. Over the years, the Hammonds moved the eatery to several locations and then in 1974 it was destroyed by fire…for the first time. From 1974 to 1997 the restaurant suffered three tragic fires and rose from the ashes each time. Today, Hammond’s is owned and operated by Larry and Judy Higgins and continues the tradition of serving up great Bar-B-Q and all the fixins to folks in Glen Rose and beyond. From the brisket and ribs to the potato salad and homemade pecan pie, Hammond’s scores impressive marks from their loyal clientele. “I’ve been eating at Hammond’s my whole life and I’ve tried BBQ all around the world,” said a recent diner, “It’s all in the sauce, the down home cooking, and Texas hospitality that makes Hammond’s my all- time favorite BBQ.”The laid-back country atmosphere combined with a large dose of Southern hospitality brings customers back again and again. “When you see locals packing a place you know you scored big and you are about to have a memorable meal,” noted a Frisco Texas visitor, “I ordered

the ribs and they were very meaty with a rich bark and a subtle smoky flavor, the barbecue sauce was tangy-sweet and not too spicy…perfect. Of all the restaurants we visited in Glen Rose this was definitely our favorite!”License plates, memorabilia and old newspaper articles adorn the walls at Hammond’s. “When I’m in the mood for BBQ, I get a warm feeling when I walk into a place with wooden beams on the ceiling, license plates hammered to the walls, and kitschy knick knacks everywhere. I feel like I’m at a place that’s been around for a while and housed many wonderful yummy food memories,”said a diner who visited recently from Houston.Excellent food, a caring and attentive staff, and rustic family atmosphere have made Hammond’s the best BBQ place in Glen Rose for the last forty eight years.Give them a call for your next catered event too!
