Chaplain’s Corner...Thanksgiving and GratitudeAs we enter the Thanksgiving season, I think it is important to know what thanksgiving and gratitude really are. Verse 4 of Psalm 100 says “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”

The Hebrew word for “thanksgiving” in this passage is “towdah.” It can be translated in a variety of ways, including “thanksgiving,” “praise,” “thanks,” “confession,” and “thank-offerings.” It is this final translation I believe to be especially important. As a result of our “thankfulness,” we perform an action that shows we are truly thankful and passes it on to others. Our English word “gratitude” is a close equivalent. It means “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

To express this thank-offering to others we must start with what we are thankful for. It becomes difficult when the negative things in life cause us to lose perspective. Perhaps we’ve been laid low by an illness, and can think of nothing else. Or, in the midst of a conflict with a boss, feelings of anger and resentment crowd out any sense of thankfulness.

In Romans 1:21, the Apostle Paul describes it in these terms: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

Did you notice the last half of that verse? They were “vain” – their thoughts were all about themselves and what they wanted, and as a result their hearts were darkened.

L & D Nurse Closes Out Her CareerVery best wishes to Nell Bartels, who is retiring after 36 years as one of the mainstays of our Labor and Delivery unit. Friends and family members came to share the occasion with Nell at a party in her honor on October 20.

The entire MCP community expresses its appreciation to Nell for her three-plus decades of distinguished service caring for women as they brought new life into the world. F

Guidelines for Holiday DisplaysHave questions about the hospital-approved way to display holiday-theme décor? For answers, please refer to our Environment of Care policy under “Furnishings, Bedding, and Decorations.”

The policy spells out the absolute priority MCP places on protecting patients, staff members, and visitors against fire.

Seasonal decorations must therefore comply with the following restrictions:

• Displays of electric lights are permitted only on artificial trees at nurses’ stations, and in lobbies and waiting areas. However, battery-operated lights and decorations are permitted in all areas.

• Live Christmas trees are not permitted.• Artificial trees, wreaths, etc., must be fabricated from flame/fire-

retardant materials.• Decorative materials must be kept away from light fixtures, electrical

equipment, electrical outlets, circuit-breaker panels, fire sprinklers, smoke detectors and other fire-protection equipment.

• Decorations may not obstruct the visibility of, or access to, doorways, stairs, or exit signs.

• Any type of open flame – including that of a lit candle – is prohibited. No single policy can anticipate every possible question. At all times,

please use good judgment. F

CNO Sandy Haire joined Nell Bartels at her October 20 retirement party.

To be Truly Thankful, We Must Choose to be ThankfulRobert Emmons, author of Thanks! How the New

Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier, shows that simply keeping a gratitude journal – regularly writing brief reflections on moments for which we’re thankful – can significantly increase well-being and life satisfaction.

In his book, Emmons suggests that “the best way to reap the benefits of gratitude is to notice new things you’re grateful for every day. Gratitude journaling works because it slowly changes the way we perceive situations by adjusting what we focus on.”

Let’s try it. Take out a sheet of paper and a pen. Write “I’m grateful for my family.” Next, get specific.

Why are you grateful to your family? For example: “I am thankful for my wife when she sits on the couch with me and is interested in my day,” “I am thankful to my brother for helping me move,” “I am thankful my son calls to check on me.”

Don’t limit yourself to the great things people do for you. Look for the practical things of everyday life. Open your eyes to the people around you and what they do that make your life better. Keep a little pad of paper with you to jot down what you see.

Gratitude means you must go beyond just being thankful. So add to your journal what you could do for the people you list that would bless them and show that you are grateful to them.

Blessings,Chaplain Garry Higgs

Realizing MCP’s Mission Through Collective Mindfulness and the Strength of a Diverse Staff– Carolyn David-Graves, For the Population-Specific Council

An article published recently by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) listed “Leveraging and Maximizing Big Data and Applying the Correct Analytics to Make Better Business Decisions” as the number-one workplace trend for 2016. Incidentally, “Building Healthy, Diverse Workforces” was ranked ninth.

Then, in August at the HCA North Texas Research and Evidence-Based Practice Day, Jane Englebright, HCA’s Senior Vice President/Chief Nurse Executive, spoke of the exciting breakthroughs our vault of patient data will help make possible, and the transformation of our operations, practice, and research and health outcomes that will result.

This led me to ponder the role technology plays in driving our work. Perhaps, I thought, machines will one day completely replace people. My thoughts turned next to “collective mindfulness” and its importance in the work we do. Big data is increasingly important, but first we must have a healthy diverse workforce with the “collective power” to produce outcomes that make us a preferred hospital in North Texas.

This collective mindfulness extends to every facet of our daily work, which we pursue knowing that even the tiniest actions can lead to results that are either adverse (if not catastrophic) or exemplary. This mindfulness is displayed by a whole army of healing ambassadors at MCP, be they administrators, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical assistants, janitors, food-service workers, volunteers, or any of the other incredible men and women who keep the hospital functioning. We come from a variety of nations, ethnicities, races, and socio-economic backgrounds. When we come together in this spirit of collective mindfulness, however, we produce amazing results.

So what are the implications of all this for diversity at MCP? That, despite our differences, we come to work every day committing to a set of common values, in order to meet the needs of our patients through collective mindfulness. Very often the driver of what we do is “Big Data” paired with technology to improve our accuracy and efficiency.

Will technology eventually completely replace people? No! While the SIOP survey does indeed

point to a shift to digital modes of healthcare delivery, a personal approach remains the most

important factor in meeting the needs of our patients. This is best accomplished through a diverse staff – one that is a microcosm of the

community it serves.

So, with compassionate hearts and physical characteristics with which our patients can identify, we assure them that, “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life; in recognition of this commitment, we strive to deliver high quality, cost effective healthcare in the communities we serve.”

This is who we are. We are The Medical Center of Plano.

From the CNO Our Magnet JourneyBeing a Magnet organization requires the engagement of our entire staff – not just the nurses – in a never-ending journey to excellence.

Thanks to the tireless leadership of Jeanne Farmer and Mary Bailie, the documents for our Magnet re-designation were submitted by the October 3 deadline.

After submission, the first thing that takes place is a close examination of the initial section, referred to as the “Organization Overview,” by the three-member survey team. Within about two weeks, we received word that the surveyors had finished their study of this section, and had no additional questions for us. They will now proceed with their review of the

remaining four sections. To give you some perspective on the sheer magnitude of the work that had to be done to get us this far, I invite

A Thankful HeartGratitude can transform common

days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary

opportunities into blessings.– William Arthur Ward

As we embark on this season of Thanksgiving, I’m mindful of the many blessings I’ve received in both my personal and professional life.

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to be your CEO, and I appreciate all of you who work diligently every day providing compassionate care to our patients and their loved ones.

In this season, we are reminded to practice gratitude as we gather with family and friends to celebrate the traditions of Thanksgiving.

I hope that each of you have opportunities to give and receive gratitude in ways that enrich your life, and that gratitude becomes an attitude we carry with us through the remainder of the year and beyond.

Quality & Patient SafetyOne thing we can all celebrate and be thankful for is

that MCP was awarded an “A” in the most recent set of hospital-safety scores published by The Leapfrog Group.

Calculation of these scores is directed by the nation’s leading experts on patient safety, and our “A” grade testifies to the dedication of our team and the way we make patient safety our number-one priority.

It also provides us with a means of comparing ourselves with other facilities in our region and across the nation. Some 2,600 hospitals were reviewed by Leapfrog

A Message from the CEO, Charles Gresslein the most recent cycle, and we are very proud to be numbered among the elite!

MagnetOur very sincere thanks also go out to the deeply

committed co-workers who toiled so tirelessly on the document we submitted for renewal of our Magnet designation for nursing excellence.

Assembling a Magnet submission is no small feat. It requires not only professionalism of the highest order, but also the compassion our nursing staff possesses in such great abundance. We look forward to receiving official notification of our Magnet renewal sometime in the first quarter of 2017.

HCAHPSIn my recent podcasts you have heard about the

importance of making a personal connection with our patients, and seen examples of how we can all do that. Each patient has a story, and by taking steps to connect with him or her in a personal way, we communicate our compassion, and are in turn enriched as healthcare professionals. Thank you for always taking the time to see each patient as an opportunity for deeper commitment to the care and improvement of human life.

Hope FundFinally, I’d like to express my appreciation to each

employee who makes a contribution to the HCA Hope Fund. Through your donations, you are helping fellow HCA family members – both here and across the nation – who face financial devastation caused by severe illness or injury, or by fires, floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. I’m inspired by your generosity.

With a thankful heart,

Charles F

MCP Earns “A” Grade in Patient SafetyThe Medical Center of Plano has again been awarded an “A” grade for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group.

Leapfrog, a national watchdog on the quality and safety of hospital care, uses publicly available information on 30 different quality and safety measures to assign letter grades to some 2,600 U.S. hospitals. The grades are calculated twice yearly.

MCP was one of 844 hospitals to receive an “A,” ranking it among the nation’s safest hospitals. F
