New Shoes for New Paths By Jeanne Grevlos

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

–Psalms 119:105 The beginning of the school year always held a particular enchantment for me. New supplies, new teacher, new classroom, new shoes! I remember placing my foot on the metal gizmo in the shoe store, standing on one foot applying all my weight, hoping to see my foot had grown into the next size. by Pastor Tom Grevlos While driving to church at 7:00 am suddenly I am an eye-witness to the symbol of a new school year beginning...a big yellow school bus! I see sleepy high schoolers gathering at the street corner where no one is talking. They wait for the bus to transport them to an anxious first day. Where will I sit on the bus? Who can I sit with at lunch? Will I have any friends in my classes? Will my locker open? New beginnings can be exciting, but they can also be

accompanied by great anxietyBthe fear of the unknown. No matter what our age, transitions can be difficult, filled with a mix of anticipation and dread. A new job, retirement, going off the college, to name a few, are all new beginnings, pregnant with possibility, yet the image of the yellow school bus and that first day of school still lurks. Whatever your time of transition, whatever your new beginning, it is always good for us to be reminded that God is bigger. The powerful presence of the Spirit planted in you is the promise that God has for you. And, no matter what you and I face in our lives, we are not alone and we do not travel alone. It is a simple message of grace. The school bus serves as a reminder. May God bless all who are in transition, and may we cast our fears and worries on the God who travels with our children and young people as they begin new journeys. Speaking of life transitions! In these past few months there have been some staffing transitions as well. I am excited about the staff team that is being assembled to serve God and the people of God at Our Saviour’s. I look forward to where the Spirit is leading in the days ahead. In these challenging and opportunistic times, I am filled with hope and joy in remembering that we worship a God of promise, a God who is bigger. It is a great day to be the Church! Staff Transitions: • Pastor Al Creighton was contracted as Pastor of Visitation. • Lynda Devore was hired as Executive Director. • Robyn Ingstrup was hired as an assistant on the Christian Education Team, as Laura Nylen will be

transitioning to spend more time with her family. • Terry Thompson was hired as Seraphim Children’s Choir director. • Kelly Gilligan was hired as co-director with Sharon Koplinski at The Children’s Center Pre-School, along

with several new teachers and assistant teachers. • Pastor Janelle Hooper accepted a new pastoral call to Sugar Land, TX. • New Member Coordinator, Barb Dwyer, and her husband Tom Greenberg, will be moving to Texas. Our Pastor Search Team has been formed and is working in earnest to search for an Associate Pastor in the area of Faith Formation for children, youth, and adults. This person will be fully integrated into our family ministries and work closely with our faith formation staff as well as have general pastoral responsibilities. Please pray for this process. Serving on the Search Team are; Jeff Cordes, Brad Evans, Cheri Turnquist, Jennifer Schuler, Janelle Camp, Brett Lindberg, Tom Schneider (council rep), Sara Gmitro (HR), Pastor Tom, and Lynda DeVore (Executive Director).

Care and Support

Stephen Ministry Training Class to Start in October by Jane Kahle As one of our current Stephen Ministers recently wrote, "Stephen Ministry provides a unique, personal way to share God's love and care. Stephen Ministers share their time by listening and giving support to fellow Christians during those times in their lives when they need extra spiritual encouragement, support, acceptance, and love. Facing a crisis, a new challenge, or change can be emotionally and spiritually depleting. It does not need to be faced alone." If you have ever wondered about being a Stephen Minister, this is the month to make your interest known! A new training class will be offered starting in October. We are receiving names now for those who are interested so that preparations for the class can be made. The training runs for 8 consecutive Monday evenings, offering training in active listening, spiritual direction, and individual caring skills. If you are interested in talking further with someone about being a Stephen Minister or would like the support of a Stephen Minister, please contact Jane Kahle 630-281-4269 or Pastor Al Creighton 630-281-4222.

Special People

Sandy LePage

Celebrated a Special Day by Sally LePage Barclay Our Saviour’s member Sandy LePage just celebrated a milestone...her 80th birthday on August 16. She is a 50+ year member of the church. "Our Saviour's is a very special place, near and dear to my heart as many special life events have taken place here: the confirmation of my 3 children (Sue, Sally and Pete), the wedding of daughter Sally (1984), and the funeral of my husband, Bud (1991)." In her early years as a member, Sandy was involved with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She and her husband served as worship greeters for many years and her husband served as president of the church council. "Our Saviour's is where we met our closest and lifelong friends". More recently she has been involved with a LIFT group, morning Bible study with Jeanne Grevlos and monthly luncheons for seniors. She most often attend Saturday evening worship services. Sandy's greatest strengths and joys in her life revolve around her faith, her family (3 children and spouses and 5 grandchildren) and her many dear friends. She also enjoys reading and traveling. She is very thankful for the Our Saviour’s faith community that has nurtured her faith and supported her throughout her years. She is also thankful for God's unconditional love and strength.

Welcome Robin! Robin Ingstrup will be joining us this August as a member of our Children and Family Faith Formation team. Formerly an elementary school teacher, she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at Northern Illinois University. Robin and her husband Joseph live in Naperville with their two daughters, Kendall (6) and Haley (4) and have been members at Our Saviour’s for five years. During this time, Robin has worked in the church nursery and has been a preschool teacher in The Village Church School. She enjoys spending family time at their cottage in Wisconsin as well as volunteering at her daughter’s school, tutoring students in reading, baking, bowling, and making picture DVDs for family and friends.

Adult Opportunities

Take 2 Ministry by Jim Hiner Take 2! is a program created at Our Saviour’s that seeks new insights and opportunities for those individuals who are either contemplating or transitioning into retirement and want to explore what comes next. “LifeKeys”, a series of self assessment exercises, are used to help individuals focus on their

gifts, talents, values and passions. Through supportive group discussion we probe how these personal traits can be used to create meaning and purpose for the individual while also creating a positive impact and legacy for future generations. Here are a few comments from some of the participants:

• “I think I had already processed some of this thinking upon my retirement. But now, I have a more concrete way to evaluate what I need and how I can more effectively contribute to both the faith community and the community at large.”

• “Now being much more aware of my life gifts and how I can be most effective, I will be able to better identify areas where I can make a positive impact. I want to create energy, not deplete energy.”

• “This program is thought provoking and a great way to do some self examination and gets you focused on your gifts/talents and the value they have regardless of your stage of life or professional standing.”

We will be offering the program three times during the next year. All three offerings will take place at the Adult Learning Center at Celebration! Campus from 7:00 - 9:00 pm and it will last for 7 consecutive weeks. Each offering is limited to 10 participants. Here are the sessions we will be offering: Fall – Mondays from October 3 thru November 21. Winter – Tuesdays from January 17 thru February 28. Spring – Mondays from April 9 thru May 21. An information session will be held on Sunday, September 11 at the Adult Learning Center at Celebration! Campus from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. You are invited to come and learn more about the program and to get answers to your questions. Interest Groups .

The Book Sharing Groups… by Wlima Roose The Book Sharing Groups were formed many, many years ago. A gal who was on the library committee along with Mary Jo Carlson our librarian started the groups probably in 1974 or 1975. That lady moved away and I inherited the responsibility......I've really enjoyed every minute of it. I moved to Naperville the summer of 1975 and joined the library committee. I have kept my records from the book sharing groups which I took over in the Fall of 1976. Our year is from October to May, so beginning this Fall, it will be the 36th year that I have been doing it. Add a couple of years before that and it is 38. We did have two years that the groups were not organized. In 2003/04 the library was closed for construction and remodeling. 2004/05 I had knee replacement surgery in September so Book Sharing Groups were not organized. I guess with that info one could say we have had reading groups for 36 years. One may ask why we don't have a book discussion group. We have helped organize a couple through the years but they haven't continued. The reasons are many but I think most of all it was finding a day or evening that suited everyone in the group, and also the fact that they were responsible for getting their own book. The members of the groups we have like the fact that they can read during the month at their convenience. They do not have to read every book, go to meetings, or take tests. Each group is given Christian Fiction, Biography and Christian Life Books. There is a rating sheet in each book if they care to make comments about the book. This helps us to promote the books to other church members and also to use them again in the reading groups. Some of the readers have been with us for 20 or more years. We usually get a couple of new members a year and, of course, due to relocation, illness, jobs etc. others can no longer be with us. What do the members say? Many anxiously await their book each month. Many tell me they didn't realize what great books we have in the library. They thank us for doing it and always want us to do it the next year. I have many names of members who have been with us for 15 to 20 years. I asked a member Sunday if she was going to be with us this Fall and she said, “Of course, you don't even have to ask.” I know we have done it many years but it is a good program and most of all, promotes the adult section of our library. Hard to change something that works. This year in May, one group met at someone's house for coffee and discussed the books briefly they had read. I plan on checking with each group next May and see if they would be interested in getting together that one time. We are considering setting up a day once a month this Fall and any member that would like to can meet with me at the library and discuss the book they are reading or just listen to others. We invite you to join a Book Sharing Group sponsored by Our Saviour’s Library and read a variety of books from our library’s fine collection of books on Christian Life, Fiction and Biographies. No meetings to attend, no reports to be written. Receive a book a month to read and enjoy. Join us by signing your name and telephone number on the Top Opportunities Sheet, in your bulletins, indicating “Book Sharing Group”, or sign up in the library. For more information contact Wilma Roose at 630-896-0971 or [email protected]. Please do so by September 18, the last day for sign up, as the reading groups begin October 2.

It’s About People by Janine Norgaard Vacation Bible School and summer camps are sweet memories but the impact of those days continues. Below is one mom’s expression of gratitude for her kids’ experience at VBS: “My children don't have much experience with church and VBS was my way of getting them excited about going to church and learning more about faith. THEY LOVED IT! I thank you all so much for the perfect start to a new relationship with God and our family. I am certain that they will be eager to follow up in your church school. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! VBS was just what we all needed!” “We are planning to join the church and when we mentioned that to our kids they were confused..."That's already our church!" That says a lot about Our Saviours!” It isn’t programs that people connect to – it’s people that people connect to – and through people we connect to God. We are excited about all the people (big and little) who will join us in The Village church school. To register for church school please go to oursaviours.com. Questions about church school, serving in church school, or registering for church school, may be directed to Janine Norgaard at [email protected].

Women Opportunities

Ladies—Invitations to Stretch and Soothe Your Spirit! by Jeanne Grevlos Please take note and feel invited to fresh opportunities for the life of your spirit! Women’s Night Out—Thursday Night Wellspring Purpose: For women who: • seek to connect with other women on an ongoing basis • desire deep and authentic conversation • yearn for a spirituality that integrates daily life, challenges, and

experiences Beginning in October and throughout the year, the Adult Learning Center at Celebration! has been reserved for WOMEN ONLY on Thursday evenings from 7:30 until 9:00 pm. The opportunities are as follows: First Thursday: Praying the Scriptures. Using an ancient form of prayer practice entitled Lectio Divina, we will experience the Spirit through simple scripture passages. It is a form of praying that offers insight into prayer and ourselves. Participants will NOT have to pray aloud, but instead be illumined by simple passages of scripture that come alive in a new way. Spend an evening in peace, listening, reflection, visual imagery, and community. Second Thursday: Immersion Bible Experience—but no experience necessary! Immerse yourself in a story or a passage and be delighted by the insights God provides! Join with others as “we don’t speak to scripture or about scripture,” instead—we allow scripture to speak to us! Powerful and engaging, your mind and heart will leap into the ancient practice of reading God’s story with expectation and enlightenment. Third Thursday: Women’s Voices, Women’s Choices Join the conversation! Meet women throughout time that have had something to say about God, spirituality, faith, and life. From contemporary writers, to artists, to mystics of the middle ages, to ancient women articulating a feminine experience of GodBwe can sit on the shoulders of these giants and ask new questions. What do they have to teach us? What do we have to teach each other? No preparation necessary. Refreshments will be served! Fourth Thursday: Special Events involving women’s issues or entertainment will be scheduled periodically throughout the year. Watch for details. Otherwise—open night! Contact: Jeanne Grevlos, [email protected] with questions or for info!

Word Weavers—Women Who Write! Purpose: For women to connect with their creative spirit and others as we nourish our souls and relationships! Do you writeBor have you always had an inkling to write? Do you need a bit of structure to get yourself going? Think of writing as a sculptor thinks of marble. There lays within an unformed block of stone, a beautiful work waiting to emerge. Chipping away and chiseling over time brings art to life! So it is with words. They are inside usBwaiting to find voice. Opportunities will range from composing simple sentences, phrases, or lengthier works as the spirit moves! Once a month, women who write or have always wanted to try it, with gather for inspiration and fellowship. Connect with your creative spirit, feel refreshed and ennobled, soar with words that take us to a different place! Never judgmentalBonly an environment of encouragement and acceptance will greet you! Time and location to be

determined. For more information contact: Karen Aigner: [email protected] or Jeanne Grevlos: [email protected]. Open to women of any age!

Men’s Ministries

Ac Rock Concert The Men’s Ministry of Our Saviour’s, sponsored an Ac Rock Concert at Celebration Campus this past month. 175 people attended to see this lively and very talented group. The show was great, and everyone had fun. Our very own Chris Brown is part of this a cappella group, that perform at corporate events, school and group events, mostly throughout the Chicago area. If you missed the concert you may be asking who is Ac Rock? Ac Rock is Chicago's premier a cappella quartet, singing classic rock 'n roll favorites from the 1950s through the 1980s. Ac Rock sings boomer rock in stunning vocal harmony without instrumental accompaniment. It's an engaging mix of tightly-crafted music and freewheeling humor that pleases audiences of all ages. The Men’s ministry team would like to thank all of you who attended, and especially those who helped with planning and running the event. Thanks to Dave Ashcraft, Tracy Butler, Scott Damge, Bob Fratini, John Yost, Don Hower, Dave Cleveland, and Vic Hildebrand. Special thanks to staff members Ella Druek (and daughters Rachel and Kyra) for running the Open Door and refreshments, Jean Jepson for communications, Jennifer Sevatson handling the cash boxes and receipts, Kathie Howe for helping with ticket sales at Celebration!, and Renee Montgomery for helping with the PowerPoint pictures and "business" cards. Missions

Refugees: A Donated Car by Anne Wentz Our Saviour’s members, Tony and Judy Meydrich, donated their 1998 Mercury to Naperville CARES, an organization that accepts donated cars to give to people who need them. When the car committee at CARES receives a car, it has the car checked over by a mechanic to make sure it is roadworthy, and will make repairs up to their budgeted amount. Tony’s car was the “cleanest” they had ever received, only 68,000 miles and in perfect condition, needing no repairs at all. The car is going to a refugee family in Carol Stream. The family is from Iran and has been in this country for 7 months. This is a family of five: parents, two high school age daughters and a college age son. The father and son both have drivers’ licenses, but have not been able to afford a car in this country. The father works in a laundry that does laundry for local hospitals. But work is irregular, averaging 2-3 days a week and sometimes no days at all. The son works at a distribution company, and he also works only 2-3 days a week. Father and son each pay $25 a week for transportation. The two daughters go to high school, and, of course, have homework to be done on a computer. They cannot afford internet service at home. The school says that the daughters can stay after school to work on the school computers. This didn’t work either, since they have no way to get home after staying late. The mother has some medical issues, that have required many medical appointments. It was necessary to request rides from friends & family. So, this car is going to transform lives for this family. Father and son will be able to get to work on their own and perhaps get full-time jobs that they couldn’t accept before due to the transportation issue. The daughters will have the full benefit of their education by being able to stay late and use school computers. The mother will be able to get to medical appointments. Thank you, Tony and Judy, and thank you Naperville CARES.

"So, Pastor Mark ... What's a Leader?" by Pastor Mark This summer I had the honor of taking a handful of Our Saviour's high school and college students to Europe for what we called the Slovakia Mission Leadership Camp. The concept was to take students from Martin, Nitra, and Naperville and create the opportunities where they could flex their "mission leadership" muscles. To quote Bill Hybels from Willow Creek Community Church, "When leaders get better at leading, everyone benefits!" Our student leaders; • Led the destruction and removal of an old shed and debris; clearing the backyard of a women's shelter so

children could play. • Led and planned the activities for a summer camp in Martin Slovakia. • Learned how to lead outside their comfort zone; playing and communicating with mentally and physically

disabled children in a Martin orphanage. Toward the end of the trip, Paige Hoerle said, "So Pastor Mark. You keep calling us leaders. What's a leader?" And at that point, I could see God at work as our students started to grasp the leadership potential that I and so many others already saw in them. We as a group decided that leaders are bold, good communicators, good listeners, passionate, and love to learn. As I went around the group and asked which leadership attributes they had ... it became very clear very quickly ... I was in the presence of leaders. I am grateful that the future of the church is in the hands of quality leaders like the ones who traveled with me to the other side. I could help them see just a little more clearly their leadership potential.
