Now the Feast and Celebration with Communion

GATHERING

Introduction

The last of the 10 commandments against coveting includes envy, resenting the fact that another has what we don’t. God cares for the sparrows, how much more does he care for us! We rejoice that we are held in the palm of God’s hand. God knows what we need and will never forget his children. Our scripture readings today call us to confident trust in our loving heavenly Father, and contentment in his care for us.

Gathering Hymn: (cranberry) #836 Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

1. Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee, praising thee, their sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the gloom of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

2. All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,

stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,

chanting bird, and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

3. Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

well spring of the joy of living, ocean dept of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our brother, all who live in love are thine;

teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine!

Prayer of the Day

P: Generous God, in abundance you give us things both spiritual and physical. Help us to hold

lightly the fading things of this earth and grasp tightly the lasting things of your kingdom, so

that what we are and do and say may be our gifts to you through your Son Jesus, who beckons

all to seek the things above, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

WE HEAR GOD'S WORD

First Exodus 20:1-2, 17

The desires of our hearts will lead us astray. We are to love God. We are to love neighbor. We are

not to desire our neighbor’s spouse or house or goods. Our hope is in our God who has taken us for

his very own. God can be trusted to help us with our needs.

1God spoke all these words:

2I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;

17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or

female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

R The Word of God, word of life.

C Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: Philippians 4:10-14

Paul knew how to be content, whether much or little. His secret was drawing on Christ’s strength.

10I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you

were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it. 11Not that I am referring to being in

need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12I know what it is to have little, and I

know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-

fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13I can do all things through him

who strengthens me. 14In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress

R The Word of God, word of life.

C Thanks be to God.

Gospel: Matthew 10:29-31

Jesus encourages his followers to trust in God and to regard life with thanksgiving rather than

worry and anxiety.

29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your

Father. 30And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not be afraid; you are of more value

than many sparrows.

Message Song (cranberry) #840 Now Thank We All Our God

1. Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,

who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;

who, from our mothers’ arms, has blest us on our way

with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

2. Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us,

and keep us all in grace, and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all harm in this world and the next.

3. All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,

the Son, and Spirit blest, who reign in highest heaven,

the one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore;

for thus it was, is now, and shall be ever more.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

The Father, the Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

Of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in on Lord, Jesus Christ,

The only Son of God,

Eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

True God from true God,

Begotten, not made,

Of one Being with the Father;

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

He came down from heaven,

Was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

And became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

In accordance with the scriptures;

He ascended into heaven

And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

Who was spoken through the prophets.

We believe in the one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

And the life of the world to come. Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, +one God,

whose steadfast love is everlasting,

whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

C: Amen.

P: Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P: Reconciling God,

C: we confess that we do not trust your abundance,

and we deny your presence in our lives.

We place our hope in ourselves

and rely on our own efforts.

We fail to believe that you provide enough for all.

We abuse your good creation for our own benefit.

We fear difference and do not welcome others

as you have welcomed us.

We sin in thought, word, and deed.

By your grace, forgive us;

through your love, renew us;

and in your Spirit, lead us;

so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

P: Beloved of God,

by the radical abundance of divine mercy

we have peace with God through + Christ Jesus,

through whom we have obtained grace upon grace.

Our sins are forgiven.

Let us live now in hope.

For hope does not disappoint,

because God’s love has been poured into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

The Prayers

P: Gracious God, hear our prayer.

After each portion of the prayer the congregation responds with the following:

C: and let our cry come to you.

Peace

P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C And also with you.

P We share Christ's peace with each other.

Words of Institution

P: You are indeed holy, gracious and merciful God; everything is filled with your glory. We

give you thanks for your promise and presence which have sustained the faithful in this

and every generation. Above all, we give you thanks for Jesus, born of Mary, who in word

and deed announced your gentle rule of justice, reconciliation and peace.

On the night of his betrayal our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and

gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat: this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the for-

giveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his command to love

one another, his life and death, his resurrection and ascension we pray for his coming

again, even as we cry: Amen! Come Lord, Jesus!

P: Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, that all of your promises may come to us and your

whole creation. Amen! Come, Holy Spirit!

P: This we pray through Jesus Christ, our Savior and our friend.

The Lord’s Prayer

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Hymns : In the Garden

1. I come to the garden alone, While the dew is still on the roses;

And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, The Son of God discloses.

~Refrain~

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,

And He tells me I am His own: And the joy

We share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.

2. He speaks and sound of His voice is so sweet the birds hush their sing,

And the melody that He gave to me With in my heart is ringing.

~Refrain~

Hymn (cranberry) #623 Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee;

let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed,

be of sin the double cure; cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r.

2. Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law’s demands;

could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow,

all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone.

3. Nothing in my hand I bring; simply to thy cross I cling.

Naked , come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace;

foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.

4. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyelids close in death,

when I soar to worlds unknow, see thee on thy judgment throne,

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.

Post Communion Blessing and Prayer

P We thank you, O God, that you have fed us at your banqueting table

with bread and wine beyond compare, the very life of Christ for us.

Send your Spirit with us now, that we may set the captive free,

use your gifts to build one another up, and in everything reflect your glory

revealed in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C Amen.

Page 11: Now the Feast and Celebration with Communion GATHERING · 1 day ago · chanting bird, and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee. 3. Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing,

name you beloved,

and shine brightly on your path;

and the blessing of almighty God,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be upon you and remain with you always.

C Amen.

Sending Hymn (cranberry) #547 Sent Forth by God’s Blessing

1. Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,

the people of God from this dwelling take leave.

The supper is ended, Oh, now be extended

the fruits of this service in all who believe.

The seed of Christ’s teaching, receptive souls reaching,

shall blossom in action for God and for all.

Your grace shall incite us, your love shall unite us

to work for your kingdom and answer your call.

2. With praise and thanksgiving to God ever living,

the tasks of our everyday life we will face

our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,

Embracing God’s children, the whole human race.

With your feast you feed us, with your light now

Lead us; unite us as one in this life that we share.

Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving

Give honor to Christ and his name that we bear.

Sending

P Go in peace. Christ is your light.

C Thanks be to God.
