Early Graduation for your Homeschool Student

It’s not uncommon for homeschool parents to consider early graduation (before the age of 18) for their students when they’ve accrued 24 or more high school credits (which are typically considered sufficient to graduate). Indeed, many christian homeschooling in california students are ready for graduation early, and move on successfully to higher education and work. However, it’s important to think about those next steps after graduation. Graduating early is not your actual goal; your true goal is to launch self-supporting, independent, adult children. There is no requirement anywhere that says you must graduate your child when they earn a certain number of credits (or turn a certain age, for that matter!). You don’t have to graduate them until you, as the parent, know that they’re able to be self-supporting, independent adults. You don’t have to graduate them until you, as the parent, know that the time is right. No number will tell you this information; you as the parent are the best judge.

Sometimes parents can get concerned if their child has a lot of credits, and wonder whether this will be a barrier to college admittance. It’s not uncommon for homeschool students to have a lot of credits, but that doesn’t mean that you have to worry (or graduate them early). For example, at the private high school that Bill Gates went to, which is a college-prep high school; it’s not uncommon for students to have 40 to 45 credits. Clearly you don’t need to worry about having too many credits!

Sometimes parents choose to graduate their student early because they’re experiencing a great deal of frustration with their child. Again, I encourage you to think about what’s next--think about the real goal. If you graduate your child early based on your frustration level, you may end up with a couch potato and a failure to launch problem. Remember, you want them to graduate and move on to the next thing.

Regardless of your thoughts about graduating early, remember that graduation is not the end result. Keep in sight the goal, which is to launch self-supporting, independent, adult children. Graduation is the beginning of the next part of your student’s life. Once you understand that, your worries will resolve a little bit. Remember that it is not an end, but the beginning of the next great part of their lives!
