The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras (NOYO) exist to provide a progressive orchestra program with challenging educational musical opportunities

in orchestral and small ensemble training and performing for young instrumentalists under the guidance of professional musicians.

MISSION

ABOUT USThe Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras is a regional orchestral training program that attracts gifted young musicians ages 8-22 from a geographic area spanning Toledo to Cleveland. Our musicians rehearse weekly at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music under the direction of a distinguished staff of musicians. They explore classical, romantic, contemporary, and world

music repertoire through three distinct performing ensembles: the Symphonetta Strings, Philharmonia Orchestra, and Rhythm & Brass. Our musicians may compete in our annual concerto competition and participate in guest master classes. They routinely commission and perform new works, tour, perform side-by-side with peer orchestras, and collaborate with guest artists.

MESSAGE FROM THE

BOARD CHAIR

NICOLE MCGUIREBoard Chair

As I look back on the 45th season of the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras, and all of the incredible work by our orchestra members, staff, and faculty, I say, “Bravo!” This season began with the board laying the foundation for the growth of NOYO by re-organizing the staff and creating the position of Executive Director. The board also spent time participating in a retreat and strategic planning session. During this daylong event, the board utilized creativity methods to diverge and converge on ideas for the year. This investment by the board helped lay the groundwork for what has been one of our most successful seasons. Here are a few of the things NOYO has accomplished this year: NOYO LEGACY SOCIETYThis year saw the launch of the NOYO Legacy Society. This society was established for our donors to have an avenue for planned giving in the form of cash, equity, or property. MEDIA & MARKETINGWe expanded NOYO’s multimedia online presence with the continued redesign of our website, an “About Us,” video and a stronger Facebook presence. NOYO’s monthly newsletter, the Whole Note, was also expanded to an increasing audience. We also introduced the PEP Talk series as a way for parents and family members to learn about helping their student musician pursue their goals. PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTSThe Rhythm & Brass, NOYO’s newest ensemble, continued to increase their role as an integral part of the NOYO concert season, while also participating in several community outreach performances. We also extended the Philharmonia

Orchestras’ rehearsal time to include an hour of weekly sectional work allowing for more individualized rehearsal time. Lastly, we modified our intermediate-level orchestra to focus specifically on developing string players. Now called the Symphonetta Strings, these musicians train with professional string teachers to improve their ensemble playing skills with an emphasis on collaboration, proper technique, and musicianship. Next year will be a year in collaboration. The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras will partner with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra in October as a part of a two-year concert exchange and close out the season in March with a chorus and orchestra performance with the Oberlin Choristers. We are continuing to look for ways to collaborate with the community, parents, schools, and alumni to be a partner in the musical education of the NOYO students. I look forward to the coming season and all it holds for the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras.

MESSAGE FROM THE

EXECUTIVE &ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Our 45th anniversary season was an incredible year of change for the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras. We ushered in a new artistic staff, several new program initiatives, and a new vision for the future. As I reflect on the year, I couldn’t be more proud of our gifted young musicians and dedicated staff.

When our new staff first met, we easily identified goals for the concert season. We aimed to continue to improve the depth of our education, expand the reach of our programs, and give back to our community. Here is a look at our goals and the progress we’ve made.

INCREASE INSTRUMENT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONWeekly Sectional CoachingsThe Symphonetta Strings and Philharmonia Orchestra now begin every rehearsal with an hour-long sectional coaching under the guidance of faculty, staff, and students from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. In this small ensemble setting, they can improve their technical skills in preparation for orchestra rehearsals.

Symphonetta Strings With so few public schools in northern Ohio offering string education, it is critical that NOYO serves as an outlet for young string players to gain large ensemble performance experience. Symphonetta Strings focuses specifically on the developing string player, providing specialized instruction from a staff of string performers and teachers.

EXPAND THE REACH OF OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMSPEP Talks Launched this year, our Parent Education Program strives to provide parents with the resources needed to support their child’s musical interests. We hosted discussion sessions covering topics such as careers choices in music and purchasing and insuring musical instruments.

GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSICEmpty Mugs Holiday Brass & Organ SpectacularJoining forces with the Oberlin Brass Ensemble, NOYO’s Rhythm & Brass performed at the Empty Mugs Holiday Brass & Organ Spectacular. R&B helped raise $9,700 for the Oberlin Community Services and learned how to give back to their community through music.

In addition to meeting our goals, we had an exceptional year of performances. Our season concluded with an ambitious program featuring three works commissioned in celebration of our 45th anniversary.

LOOKING FORWARD The landscape of music education in northern Ohio has changed. Many public school music programs have been cut back to cope with shrinking annual budgets. Some schools have delayed the starting grade for instrumental music while some have eliminated programs altogether. Now more than ever, NOYO needs to do more to advocate for instrumental music education in our communities. I am thrilled to work with such a passionate and creative staff that understands this need. I am looking forward to an undoubtedly exciting future for NOYO.

MESSAGE FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER

ROSALIND SOLTOWGeneral Manager

During the 2013-2014 season, my second year as general manager for the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras, I witnessed exceptional growth and change not only in our program, but also in each individual NOYO musician. This is one of the things I love about being GM; I get to know the musicians and their families over the course of the season, and, just as our NOYO parents do, I feel a deep sense of pride while watching them perform. Sitting in rehearsal from week to week, and even coaching the Symphonetta and Philharmonia viola sections

from time to time, gives me an amazing perspective on the impact of our program and what each of our musicians can accomplish when provided with the tools and encouragement they need.

Looking ahead, I am very excited to continue working with our executive and artistic director, board of directors, and conducting and coaching staff to develop our program, tailor it to our musicians’ ever-changing needs, and use it to the fullest to influence the lives of the youth of the northern Ohio area.

APPOINTMENTSWe are excited to announce the appointment of maestro Rachel Waddell as conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra for the 2014-2015 season. Ms. Waddell currently serves as the assistant conductor for the Canton Symphony Orchestra, leading many of the CSO’s education and pops concerts. She also serves as cover conductor for Gerhardt Zimmermann during the orchestra’s concert season. Having made her Masterworks series debut last year, she is slated to lead the Canton Symphony again this November. Ms. Waddell is the music director and conductor for the Canton Youth Symphony, a program that has grown tremendously under her direction.

The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras has brought music into the lives of thousands of children since 1969. NOYO has provided the unique opportunity for young musicians to train under the guidance of professional performers and music educators to develop their technique, leadership skills, responsibility, and creativity through the study and performance of orchestral repertoire.

We are proud to announce the launch of the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras’ Legacy Society, which recognizes alumni, faculty, staff, retirees, and other friends who have named NOYO a beneficiary of a planned gift. Estate gifts will play a large role in ensuring that NOYO continues to provide excellent orchestral training for generations to come.

By notifying NOYO of your gift commitment, you will be included among the donors recognized by the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras’ Legacy Society. We are truly grateful for these gifts and know they will support our longstanding tradition of providing excellent orchestral training.

JOANNE ERWINFormer Artistic Director

“I had the pleasure of becoming a part of the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra family in the fall of 1992 when I moved to Oberlin to begin my teaching position as Professor of Music Education. This was a natural coupling of my primary job and my passion for sharing music with youth through orchestra experiences. Having left a youth orchestra position in Texas, I was thrilled to continue this work in Ohio. During my time as artistic director of NOYO, we increased enrollment and expanded the breadth of our programs to include chamber music and touring opportunities. It has been a joy to see so many students participate and for some to continue their studies of music in college.

Because of this vital part of my time in Oberlin, I am leaving a legacy gift to NOYO. It is my hope that this organization continues to thrive and provide musical experiences for youth in Northern Ohio.”
