Green Jobs Internship Program Genetics
The Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP)
of Employment and Social Development Canada
(ESDC) (formerly HRSDC)
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Office of the Chief
Scientist is coordinating (see last slide for contact info)
NRCan’s Office of Energy Efficiency is leading for
NRCan by reaching out to stakeholders in Housing,
Industry & Buildings sectors

Green Jobs Internship Program Overview
Natural Resources Canada is now accepting applications
for a new “Green Jobs Youth Internship” pilot project to
encourage employers to hire young graduates into
positions that will:
help reduce energy use; and
benefit the environment
The project aims to help engage young graduates in
energy management, innovation and the use of green
technologies and processes in “sectors under the
purview of NRCan”

Green Jobs Internship Objectives
Provide 100 college and university graduates
15-30 years of age opportunities:
to acquire professional skills and practical
work experience;
in green economic sectors or industries;
in internships that will benefit the environment

Funding Details
$1M pilot program – August 2016 to March 31, 2017
Hiring organizations qualify for 80% of the cost of hiring
recent graduates from Natural Sciences programs who
are 15 to 30 years of age as of the start of the internship
to a maximum of $10,000 per graduate

Green Jobs Eligible Employers
Private commercial and industrial businesses such
as builders and service organizations;
Industry associations;
Engineering and energy management consulting
firms;
Power utilities;
Post-secondary education institutions;
Non-profit, non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
Provincial, territorial, and municipal governments,
institutions, agencies or Crown Corporations;
Note: The program is not open to federal government
departments

Green Jobs Eligible Employers
The nature of your business aligns with green
economic sectors or industries; or
The nature of your business supports innovation and the
use of green technologies and processes in the natural
resources sectors; or
The youth internship will produce an environmental
benefit

Eligible Interns Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at outset;
A post-secondary graduate who is out of school and not
receiving Employment Insurance benefits;
A Canadian citizen , permanent resident of Canada, or
person granted refugee status in Canada;
Legally entitled to work according to the relevant
provincial legislation and regulations;
A first-time participant in the Youth Employment Strategy
program

Program Criteria
Work-terms must be full-time and last from 4 - 6 months
Placements should engage young people in roles related
to the environment, energy management, innovation
and/or the use of green technologies and processes in
sectors under the purview of NRCan
The work must support innovation and/or the use of
green and energy efficient technologies and processes

Green Jobs is a Grants and Contributions –based
federal program
Employers may claim 50% of the value of the agreement
halfway through the work term, and the rest upon work
term completion
Funding is stackable, but other sources of funding must
be disclosed
Work terms must be completed by March 31, 2017

Employer Obligations During Work
Term Match Green Jobs funding with at least an equal amount
in salary;
Employers must provide environmental and/or energy
management experience under the supervision, training,
and direction of experienced staff who act as
mentors/coaches, to ensure a meaningful work
experience;
Assume responsibility for payment of wages and any
other approved costs;
Provide a safe working environment that adheres to the
Canadian Labour Code;
Secure commitment from the intern to participate in a
Post-Internship Questionnaire;

Employer Obligations After Work Term
Provide the intern with a completed performance evaluation
Provide NRCan with a project evaluation
Assist the intern in securing a position in a related field
Acknowledge the financial assistance of the federal
government and NRCan
Comply with all the Terms and Conditions of the Contribution
Agreement
Comply with the Personal Information and Protection of
Electronic Documents Act
Co-operate if audited and/or asked to participate in a
program-wide evaluation
