1. GeneralThese instructions and safety notesin this instruction manual must befollowed.

Safety distances

The safety distance to the seed drillwhile in operation is 4 metres.Persons must under no circumstan-ces be on the seed drill while it isrunning.

Safety when lifting theseed drill

The indicated lifting eyes should beused when lifting the seed drill andwhen carrying out repair of theseed drill’s main frame.

Safety precautionsconcerning guards

Guards for chains, gear wheels androtating shaft ends etc. must befitted to comply with the requiredsafety regulations.

Loose guards, which includecalibration trays and seed hopperlid, should be fitted and closedwhen the machine is running.

The agitator shaft in the hopper isnot shielded. Therefore, to avoidinjury, hand stirring of the sowingmaterial whilst the machine isrunning must be avoided.

Fixed guards should be removedand fitted using tools.

Safety precautions whilstdriving

When driving on public roads, roadtraffic laws concerning lights, safety, etc. should be followed. Liftarm pins and top link pins shouldbe properly secured in order toavoid accidents.

On safety grounds, marker armsshould always be locked in positionwhen driving on public roads.Locking is carried out using lockfittings which are mounted on thelocking pin and secured with a ringpin. See fig. 2M and 2N.

Safety precautions whenparking

Always place the seed drill on firm, horizontal ground when it is remo-ved from the tractor. Ensure thatthe support legs are mounted andsecured by the locking pin.

Safety when cleaning

Cleaning and maintenance of theseed drill should only be carried outwhen the machine is not running.

Safety precautionsconcerning hydraulics

Hydraulic systems with a workingpressure of up to 200 bar must betreated with care. When carryingout repairs, the hydraulic systemmust be without pressure. Air in thehydraulic system can lead toincorrect functioning of the machi-ne, and thus should be expelledbefore the machine is used.

Safety precautionsconcerning tightening

Tighten all bolts after the first 25hours of operation. All bolts shouldbe subsequently tightened beforethe start of each season.

Product liability

Nordsten’s product liability coversmachines which are defective ondelivery. Product liability no longerapplies if modifications are made tothe seed drill or its accessorieswithout Nordsten’s explicit writtenpermission.

CommissioningCommissioning the seeddrill

Immediately after receiving the drill,it and any extra equipment shouldbe checked to ensure that the itemsreceived are in accordance with theorder and that there are no defectsor missing parts. Any claims shouldbe immediately forwarded to thedealer.

In the case of damage occurringduring transport, claims should beforwarded to the transport firm used.

Otherwise reference is made toNordsten’s usual terms of sale anddelivery.

The coulter settings - and thus theirrelative spacing - may have changedduring transport. The coultersettings should therefore bechecked (see section coulterspacing) and any necessary adjust-ments carried out as described.

Check that the chains between the

driving wheel, gearbox, agitator shaftand sowing shaft are correctlyadjusted. This is particularly import-tant if extra equipment with chaindrive has been fitted. Any necessaryadjustments should be carried outas described in section 5.

Chains and linkages should belubricated with oil.

Fig. 2G. Tension roller.

On tractors without the possibilityfor controlling the flow of oil from theexternal hydraulic spool valves, theair pressure can be set on theregulator valve. See fig. 2D.

On connecting hydraulic hoses theprobes should be cleaned beforeinstalling. Connect the red hose P(pressure) to the tractor's externalservice. The green hose R (return)must be fitted to a free flow return(pressureless). On tractors without afreeflow return the dealer mustestablish one.

Set air pressure as follows:

1. Make sure valve is fully open(screwed out).

2. Run tractor with spool valve inflow at an engine speed equal to pto

output. E.g. 1000 rpm PTO speed.

3. Screw in adjuster to get recom-mended air pressure.

On drills fitted with a PTO driven fan,a gearbox is mounted on the outputshaft of the power harrow and isdriven at 1000 rpm. The PTO shaft isconnected to the gearbox splinedshaft and locked with a bolt. Thecardan joint on this end of the PTOshaft is lubricated for life. The otherend of the shaft mounted to the drillshould be lubricated after evry 16hours work. See fig. 2F.

Markers

The seed drill is fitted with hydraulicmarkers.

A single-acting hydraulic take-offfrom the tractor is used whichactivates a shuttle valve (see fig. 2K)in the following way:

On supplying hydraulic pressure tothe marker system, both markers goto vertical.

By removing hydraulic pressure fromthe marker system, one marker willmove into its working position.

Shifting between the markers (i.e.between left and right) is done bysupplying, and then removing, hydraulic pressure from the system.

If both markers are required in theirworking position, the marker systemis activated in the following way:

The marker which is in its workingposition is raised about 1 metre. Thehydraulic pressure is then removedfrom the system, after which bothmarkers will move into their respec-tive working positions.

Marker arms, shear bolt

The marker arms are equipped witha shear bolt which is released whenoverloaded. Carrying an extra shearbolt (M6 x 75 grade 8.8) is recom-mended. See fig. 2L.

Marker arms in transportposition

When transporting the seed drill onpublic roads, the marker arms mustbe locked up.

The locking can be made by lockpins which are put under the supportof the marker arms. The lock pinsare secured with a ring pin. See fig.2M.

In order to reduce the transportheight on 4,0 m machines themarker arms are articulated. Bothin the "folded" position (duringtransport) and in the working positi-on the link must be locked with alocking pin, secured with a ring pinbolt. See fig. 2N.

3. AdjustmentGeneral

Before sowing begins, the followingshould be carried out:

- Test sowing of the drill

- Setting coulter pressure/sowingdepth

- Setting the drive wheel

- Setting the markers.

Test sowing of the drill

Test sowing includes both a calibra-tion depending on the weight/size ofthe seed (1000 grain weight), andthe adjustment of the sowing rateper unit area.

Agitator shaft

The agitator shaft always runs. It isnot necessary to disengage theagitator shaft when sowing largeseed, e.g. peas and beans.

Bottom flaps

The bottom flaps should be asclose as possible to the seedwheels without damaging or squee-zing the seed.

The bottom flaps can be adjustedusing the handle at the end of thehopper. See figure 3B.

The scale setting for different seedsizes should be as follows:

Fine seed : 1Corn : 2-3Peas, etc. : 3-6

Table 3A. Adjustment of bottom flapposition.

Test sowing

Fig. 3B. Handle for bottom flaps. Fig. 3C. Seed housing shutters.

Seed housing shutters

The shutters must not be used foradjusting the rate of sowing.

The shutters should always becompletely open or closed.

If you wish to start sowing with halfthe sowing width, the shutters atone side can be closed.

Emptying of machine

The calibration bags are mountedunder the seed housings and thebottom flap handle is turned back-wards.

Exchange of seed wheel

See special crops chapter 3.4.

Page 20: NS 4000 - Kongskilde

3.2 Version NS 4000 B

3. AdjustmentThe position of the cassette ischosen according to the sowingtable in this instruction. Table 3Opage 3.6..

The cassette can be rotated onlyafter removal of the ring pin in thecentre.

It is important to remember toreplace the pin after changingratios.

Scale setting,Vario-Exact gearbox

Initially, the scale should be set tothe correct sowing rate according toprevious records or to the sowingtable 3O on page 3.6.

Test sowingTest sowing

The test sowing is carried out toensure the correct sowing rate, andis carried out as follows:

The correct sowing rate can beadjusted using the formula:

NO. OF PLANTS PER M² X TCW = KG / HECTAREGERMINATION PERCENT IN THE FIELD

TCW = 1000 grain weight

After this preliminary adjustment thetest sowing should be carried out.

Gear cassette position

The gearbox allows continuouslyvariable regulation of the seedroller’s speed.

The gearbox has two differentworking ratios: a low and a high, thehigh being a direct continuation ofthe low. By turning the gear casset-te on the side of the gearbox, thehigh or low ratio can be selected.

The low ratio is engaged when thecassette is positioned with thelargest wheel upwards. This ratio isused for sowing small seeds suchas rape and clover.

The high ratio is engaged bypositioning the casette with thelargest wheel downwards. This ratiois used for grain and larger seeds.

Fig. 3D. Cassette position, high (2). Fig. 3E. Scale setting.

Page 21: NS 4000 - Kongskilde

Version NS 4000 B 3.3

3. AdjustmentStarting the seed flow

Attach the test sowing handle andturn it clockwise until the seed flowsfrom all of the outlets.

Empty the contents of the calibra-tion bags into the seed hopper.

Turning the test sowinghandle

Turn the test sowing handle accor-ding to the table 3G below:

1/20 HA 1/10 Acre

NS 4030 86 69NS 4040 42 34

Table 3G. Turn the handle x num-ber of revolutions per 1/20 ha. or1/10 acre.

Weighing

Weigh the seed from the sowingtray(s) on an accurate pair ofscales.

Calculation of the sowingrate

To obtain the sowing rate for 1 ha.,the measured weight must bemultiplied by 20.

Adjusting the sowing rate

If the calculated sowing rate corre-sponds to the required rate, thenthe machine is correctly adjusted.

If the sowing rate is not correct, thefollowing adjustment can be madeby changing the scale setting.

If a larger sowing rate is required, the regulating handle’s indicatorshould be adjusted to correspond toa higher value on the scale.

After adjustment of the scalesetting, a new test sowing shouldbe carried out.

Test sowingBlower

The blower must not be run duringthe calibration.

Bottom flaps under seedhousings.

The spring loaded bottom flapsunder each seed housing areopened. See fig. 3F.

The calibration bags are hookedbelow. See fig. 3H.

Filling of seed

Fill sufficient seed in the hoppersuch that the agitator shaft is stillcovered after a test sowing hasbeen carried out.

Fig. 3H. Calibration bag.Fig. 3F. Bottom flaps below seedhousings.

Page 22: NS 4000 - Kongskilde

3.4 Version NS 4000 B

3. AdjustmentDiscrepancies in thesowing rate

If the test sowing has been carriedout carefully, the actual and calcu-lated sowing rates should corre-spond exactly.

If this is not the case in practice, then the cause could be that thetest has not been carried outcorrrectly or that an inaccurate pairof scales has been used.

However, another potential causeof discrepancies is unusual soilconditions. Very wet or very loosesoil can cause inaccurate rolling ofthe drive wheel.

If problems are caused by the soilconditions, then a supplementarycalibration test in the field is re-commended.

Test sowing in the field followsessentially the same procedure asthe standard test sowing.

However, instead of turning the testsowing handle through a specifiednumber of revolutions, the seed drillis driven in normal working positiona specified distance in the field withthe calibrations bags mounted. Seetable 3I.

NS 4030 167 m 148 ydsNS 4040 125 m 111 yds

Tabel 3I. Drive x number of metersfor 1/20 ha. or 1/10 acres.

After test sowing

The calibration bags are removed.

The bottom flaps under the seedhousings are closed.

Blower

The blower is engaged and theworking pressure - read on thepressure gauge (fig. 3J) - is adju-sted according to table 3O page3.6.

Special crops

When sowing special crops, certainprecautions may have to be taken.

Sowing of grass seed

Sowing of grass seed requiresspecial attention since the seedscan „bridge“ in the hopper, thusaffecting the actual sowing rate. This problem will be particularlyacute if the hopper is exposed tovibration.

It is therefore advisable to carry outtest sowing with a limited amount ofseeds in the hopper, and to avoidfilling the hopper completely until inthe field where sowing is due totake place.

In addition, regular stops to manual-ly stir the hopper contents is re-commended in order to achieveuniform sowing.

Warning

Owing to the agitator shaft, stirringof the hopper contents should onlybe carried out when the machine isswitched off.

Special crops

Fig. 3J. Pressure gauge, air pres-sure.

Page 23: NS 4000 - Kongskilde

Version NS 4000 B 3.5

3. AdjustmentSowing of small roundseeds

When sowing small, round seeds, such as turnip, white mustard andrape the fluted sowing wheels areexchanged for peg wheels with fineseed fingers. The sowing rate isreduced to 1/9 and at the same timewaste is avoided since the seedsare only fed out by the pegs.

Mounting of fine seedfingers

The fine seed fingers are fitted bypressing them over the rollers. Asthe roller is turned, the fine seedfingers are pulled round to cover theroller. The fine seed fingers areshaped so that they are held inplace. See figure 3K.

Disengagement ofsowing wheels

The covers above the seed wheelsare disengaged by loosening theblack thumbscrew at the front of theseed housing.

The shaft connections on bothsides of the seed housings areremoved. The R-clips are removed.

The R-clip at left side of the seedhousing (at bearing) is removed andthe bearing is pushed out of thebearing retainer. The sowing shaftcan now be pushed fully to the right, and the bearing at right side comesout of the bearing retainer. Thesowing shaft can now be lifted outof the seed housing. See fig. 3L and3M.

3. Adjustment Couter pressure /sowing depthCoulter pressure/sowingdepth

In order to achieve the desiredsowing depth on all coulters, it isnecessary to adjust both the coulterpressure and the telescopic armscorrectly.

Coulter tightening

The tension of the spring determi-nes the sowing coulter’s workingdepth in the soil. Note also that atoo-high forward driving speed canalso result in non-uniform sowingdepth.

Central coulter adjustment can becarried out on all coulters at thesame time. Machines with a work-ing width of 4,0 m are provided withtwo spindles.

Central coulter adjustment iscarried out by turning the spindlewith the calibration handle or open-end spanner. See fig. 3P.

Fig. 3P. Central coulter adjustment.

Fig.3Q. Individual coulter pressure.

The coulter adjustment can beadjusted individually for eachcoulter. This is done by changingthe position of each spring bymoving the chain one or more linkson the coulter arm. With this indivi-dual adjustment it is possible toobtain an increased coulter pressu-re on the coulters working behindthe tractor wheels. See fig. 3Q.

Page 27: NS 4000 - Kongskilde

Version NS 4000 B 3.9

3. AdjustmentAdjustment of markers

The markers are used to make amarker track. The track ensuresthat the outer coulter in one row isboth parallel to and correctly spa-ced with respect to the previousrow.

Centre marking

The seed drill has centre marking. Thus the distance from the outercoulter track to the marker trackshould be half the width of the seedbed plus half a row spacing.

This adjustment can be carried outmost easily by driving forward a fewmetres with the markers and thesowing coulters lowered into theirworking positions, such that thetracks can be clearly seen in thesoil.

Alternatively, the marker is set 3.0m out, as measured from the centreof a 3.0 m seed drill, 4.0 m out on a4,0 m machine etc.

Marking track

The marking track’s width can beadjusted by turning the crankedmarker shaft. See figure 3S.

The narrowest track is obtained byturning the shaft downwards suchthat the marker is parallel to thedirection of travel.

The widest track is obtained byturning the shaft such that themarker is angled backwards withrespect to the direction of travel.

Markers

Fig. 3R. Centre marking.

Fig. 3S. Cranked marker shaft.

The shaft should not be turnedupwards or angled forwards withrespect to the direction of travel asthis can damage the shaft and givea poor track.

The marker arms can be locked in avertical position when driving onpublic roads or when driving closeto fences, etc.

3. Adjustment Following harrowAdjustment of followingharrow

The following harrow can be set forlight or heavy harrowing, or placedin a transport position.

Adjustment is carried out by turningthe top links between the coulterbar and the harrow arms.

Coarse adjustment can be made bymoving the top links one hole in theupper marker arms. See fig. 3T.

To obtain an optimum workingeffect it is possible to adjust theworking angle of the harrow tine.See fig. 3U.

4. OperationGenerally

During operation check continouslythat no sowing coulters are bloc-ked.

In order to avoid blockage of thecoulters, it is advisable to only raiseand lower the seed drill whendriving forwards.

Regularly check that there issufficient sowing material in theseed hopper.

Regularly check whether the actualsowing rate corresponds to thecalculated rate.

Both before and during sowingwork, attention should be paid tothe following.:

that the lift arms of the tractor arecorrectly working.

that the coulter set is horizontalwhen the machine islowered to its working posi-tion.

that the gearbox is in a goodcondition - gear wheels andgear bearings.

that the oil level in the gearbox isvisible in the oil-level glass(Vario-Exact).

that the chain drive is correctlyadjusted.

that seed rollers and bottom flapsare intact.

that bottom flaps are able tomove freely - this can bechecked using a finger or athin shaft.

that coulters are intact (not wornout).

that the coulter arms are able tomove freely and have thecorrect spring tension.

that the marker position is correct- check frequently.

that the air pressure is correctduring sowing.

Driving speed

During the sowing work the speedshould be 5-8 km/h. In generalspeed should depend on theprevailing conditions and, in parti-cular, oscillation of the machineshould be avoided.

Emptying of seed hopper

The seed hopper is emptied byopening the bottom flaps below theseed housings and by hooking onthe emptying bags. The handle forthe bottom flaps should then bepulled back completely such thatany excess sowing material isemptied into the emptying bag.See fig. 3H.

4. Operation

Land wheel

The land wheel must during trans-port be locked in a transport posi-tion. See fig. 4A.

Lid

The lid can be locked duringtransport. See fig. 4B.

5. Maintenance and lubricationAdjustment of chains

Sprocket wheels for the adjustmentof the chain should be loosened. The sprocket wheels should thenbe pushed upwards until the chainsare at the correct tension, at whichpoint the sprocket wheels shouldbe tightened again. See figure 5A.

Lubrication

The gearbox oil must be visible inthe level eye, otherwise it must berefilled with one of the followingtypes of oil:

Texaco Raudo HD 15Raudo HD 22Raudo HD 32

Shell Tellus OilTellus Oil (S) 32Tellus Oil 32

Statoil Hydraway HM 15Hydraway HM 32

ESSO Nuto H 15Nuto H 32

All chains should be lubricatedregularly. After each season, thechains should be cleaned in petro-leum and then lubricated with oil.

Before each new season all linka-ges and chain tighteners shouldalso be lubricated.

Cleaning of seed outletsand sowing rollers

Cleaning the seed outlets and seedrollers can be facilitated by remo-ving the sowing shaft. See page3.5.

Fig. 5A. Sprocket wheels.

Fine adjustment ofbottom flaps

The bottom flaps should be set tothe highest position (position 1).

Adjustment can then be carried outby turning the screw on the rearface of each bottom flap until thedistance between the flap and theseed roller is 1 mm. See figure 5B.

Fig. 5B. Adjustment of bottomflaps.

5.2 Version NS 4000 B

5. Maintenance and lubrication

Wheel arm, marker arms, markerhub and the cardan joint should beregularly greased. See fig. 5C, 5D,5E and 5F.

For PTO driven blower the cardanshaft should also be greasedregularly during the season.

All bearings are self-sealed and donot require lubrication.

Winter storage

Careful cleaning of the seed drillafter each season is recommen-ded.

The machine should also beprepared in plenty of time beforethe start of the new season.

The seed drill should be protectedfrom the elements during storage.

To prevent vermin damage, duringstorage, it is important to fully cleanthe hopper and associated mete-ring unit.
