Dear Friends,It is our mission to enhance the lives of the 50+ community by providing resources and opportunities for growth in body, mind and spirit. From the outside looking in, one might ask why that is an important mission. All that we do focuses onthe outcome of supporting independent living in the community.

No matter where you fall in the 50 year age range of the population we serve, you can probably do something now toextend independent living. Many things need to come together to age successfully in the community. We need to bephysically able, financially prepared and in many cases, we need to take steps to make our living environment moreaccessible. Many are not aware of the cost of moving to some sort of assisted living environment. Taking small stepsmay make your home decrease the chance of falls or make you home more livable. For each month that you are able tolive independently, you will be able to extend you financial resources as well. I encourage you to do some research, itmay be just the motivation you need to remain as healthy and active as possible.

We certainly provide many opportunities for you to remain physically able so that you can continue to be independent. We also provide so many ways to stay connected to others.

I would like to invite you to attend the Housing Fair to be held on September 16th. We have invited exhibitors fromthroughout the community who focus on various housing options and ways to make you home more livable.

Some people do a wonderful job planning ahead. One of our members recently asked for a referral to help him makehis bathroom more accessible. Others take a wait and see approach thinking – well - we haven’t fallen yet… Please seepage 11 for more information about falls.

For those who live in the City of Newark, there may be resources available to help with home repair and renovations tomake your home more livable now. Anika Turner, our Social Services Director has information about the FREE HomeRepair and Weatherization program. She can be reached at737-2336 x12. This is a wonderful program that has helpedmany people who are 60+ make necessary improvements totheir home.

Have a wonderful September.

WHY SHouLD I Pre-regISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts.4. Room assignments might be able to be adjusted toaccommodate a smaller or larger group, but this toodepends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

10 Shocking Statistics About Elderly FallsPosted on August 13, 2012 by Shell Point Retirement Community

These shocking statistics highlight the importance of preventing falls by taking deliberate precautions. Age related losses in muscle strength, flexibility, or balance reactions can be addressed through balance, strength

assessments, or rehabilitation therapy.

• When an elderly person falls, their hospital stays are almost twice longer than those of elderly patients who are admitted for any other reason.

• The risk of falling increases with age and is greater for women than men.• Annually, falls are reported by one-third of all people over the age of 65.• Two-thirds of those who fall will do so again within six months.• Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among people 65 and older.• Approximately 9,500 deaths in older Americans are associated with falls each year.• More than half of all fatal falls involve people 75 or over.• Among people aged 65 to 69, one out of every 200 falls results in a hip fracture. That number

increases to one out of every 10 for those aged 85 and older.• One-fourth of seniors who fracture a hip from a fall will die within six months of the injury.• The most profound effect of falling is the loss of functioning associated with independent living.

Community News FITNESS CENTER CORNER

This month the fitness center is talking aboutHealthy Aging! An important aspect of healthyaging is healthy eating. Ever heard of the DASHeating plan? DASH stands for Dietary Approachesto Stop Hypertension, so eating that reduces yourrisk for high blood pressure. This way of eatingemphasizes vegetables, fruit and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. It also chooses whole grains, fish, poultry, vegetable oils, beans, seeds andnuts. Foods that it suggests you should limit arewithout a doubt, sodium, sweets, sugary bever-ages and red meats. Consuming a diet like theDASH eating plan is beneficial for heart health formany reasons. Lowering salt intake overtime willhelp to reduce blood pressure which will reducethe risk of cardiovascular diseases like coronaryartery disease, kidney disease, heart failure, stroke and others.
