Standard 1 – rooting out age discrimination

One of the elements of this standard is thathealth and social care services are providedregardless of age

The underpinning basis for this standard isclinical and social need

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 2 in the NSF is person centred care

This is built on a foundation of health and social careservices treating people as individuals

Key here is enabling people to make choices abouttheir own care

Integrated commissioning arrangements acrosshealth & social care is one of the ways in whichchoice for people may be maximised

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 3 in the NSF is promotion of health andwell being for older people

Here the physical health, emotional health andwell being of people over 50 is promoted throughpartnership working

With the aim of extending healthy life expectancyand quality of life. Very holistic standard

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard four is challenging dependency

Which includes the availability of range of enabling, community based services that are effective

Very important but key is to ensure that communitybased services are available in which dignity in carefor individuals is a core element

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard five is a standard about intermediate care

Central to this is to enable older people to maintaintheir health, independence and home life

The home life element is important and carriesopportunities for service delivery to be implementedin community settings

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 6 of the NSF is hospital Care

So that if admission to hospital is necessary forolder people, the care they receive is co-ordinated,efficient and effective in meeting their clinical andnon-clinical needs

Which raises the question about what we mean bynon-clinical needs

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 7 covers stroke

And one of the aspects of this includes co-ordinatedlonger term services, support and advice

So again, there are opportunities for dignity in careto be a central consideration within the strokestandard

Repeated reference due to Dignity in Care having aNational Co-ordinating Group

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 8 on the NSF is falls and fractures

Which includes the prevention of falls andosteoporosis Another element is that older people who have fallenreceive effective treatment and rehabilitation

So this is a broad standard covering all aspects

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 9 is mental health in older people

Mental health problems can severely affect theindependence and quality of life of individuals andtheir families

So one of the elements of this standard is theplanning of services to ensure timely andappropriate assessment

National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 10 of the NSF is medicines and olderpeople

It seeks to ensures that older people are enabled togain maximum benefit from medication to maintainor increase their quality and duration of life

Again enabling is a key consideration and links strongly to the dignity in care agenda
