HomeworkHomework plays an important part in your programme of study. Planning and doing homework is essential as you learn to prioritise, organise and study efficiently. You should do homework and the amount and time required will increase as you move through the school. This will be a mix of work, learning, reading, research and sometimes project work. One or two subjects will be set each evening.

To Get the Best from Your Student Diary

As a Parent/Carer………

At the start of each year all students are given a new Student Diary. This also acts as the Home School Contact Book

We ask students to record their homework and other things they should remember. We ask parents to sign this book each week. It will also be signed by the Base Leader regularly. It can be used to send messages to the Base Leader and the school. It should not be used for absence notes or confidential information.

As a Student…….. Use it and keep all the sections up to date.

Your teachers will help you with some of the details but really it is up to you to include the information that is important to you.

Use your diary when planning and recording your homework. Make sure you fully understand what you have to do – if not, ask your teacher (or join a homework club).

The information in your diary will help to keep a record of your personal progress.

Plan your work.

Keep a record of your achievements during the school year.

If you lose your diary it will cost £3 to replace.

STUDENT VOICE & THE STUDENT LEARNING COUNCIL

At Northfleet School for Girls we take your views and ideas very seriously. Each Base Group has representatives who meet as a whole School Council termly. The elections for these positions take place each September.

Student Voice representatives are elected by members of their Base Groups/Communities and can be any age. The School Council Representatives meet regularly with members of staff from the Senior Leadership Team right across the range to include the Catering Manager, Teachers, Learning Support Assistants and the Caretakers to discuss issues of concern and voice their opinions. The whole School Council is split into smaller focus groups which each have their own particular targets and aims. We expect the support of the students in implementing their decisions and ideas and an on-going input to make change.

The teaching and learning focus group specifically looks at practise within the classroom and anything that might help our teachers and our students work better together.

There is a range of opportunities both in and out of school where students can talk to members of the community, KCC and other schools. Good ideas go both ways and students have even run the school for a day, taking assemblies and meeting with the Headteacher’s visitors.

Students also help review the Behaviour for Learning Policy

The list of what could be undertaken is endless – the most important thing to remember is that YOU can make a difference because YOU have a VOICE that will be listened to.

For further information about how you can become involved, please speak to your Base Leader or Community Progress and Achievement Leaders or Mrs Dowden who leads on Student Voice.

A Guide for Coping with Unkind People

When should I do something about the unkindness?

If someone is repeatedly calling you names saying horrible things spreading rumours about you making fun of you getting other people to be nasty to you telling lies about you ignoring you or leaving you out taking your things without permission hitting, kicking or punching you threatening to harm you deliberately damaging your belongings

If you feel very unhappy or unsafe, you need to do something about it

How can I help myself? keep to safe areas of the school keep near to people who are not being unkind to you tell parents, teachers or friends what is worrying you practise looking happy, being positive and ‘walking tall’; use a mirror to help ignore the unkindness or say “No” really firmly, then walk away avoid showing you are upset or angry or fighting back think up clever or funny replies you can make and practise them keep a diary about what is happening and how you feel ask someone who witnessed what happened to you to go with you to

tell someone ask the unkind person to stop or ask how they would like it if you were unkind

to them

If you are not being unkind to anyone elsethen you are not doing anything wrong

If you are unable to attend school through illness, your parent/carer should ring the Attendance Officer on the first day of illness, preferably before 8.30am. When you return to school you should bring an explanatory note. If you are to be away from school for a prolonged period but are well enough to study, your parents may ask teaching staff for work.

As you have nearly three months holiday from school, family holidays should be taken at this time. If this is not possible, you must put a request in writing to the Headteacher.

Permission for holiday in school time is only granted in special circumstances. The school Governors have also agreed to the introduction of penalty notices as a further deterrent; these allow the Attendance and Behaviour Service to impose fines on parents taking their children out of school for unauthorised holiday leave. Any student attendance of 85% or less is likely to involve monitoring by the Attendance and Behaviour Service.

Absence for holidays will not be granted during Year 10, 11 and the Sixth Form

Prolonged or frequent absence can seriously affect your academic future. Please ensure that any time that you spend away from school is really necessary.

Lateness

Employers and Colleges of Further Education ask for details of your punctuality. A pattern of lateness causes problems for you in keeping up with work. Lateness disrupts lessons. Our policy is to encourage good time-keeping. If you arrive after 8.30am you must sign in at the Attendance Office. If you are late you will be given a detention. If lateness starts to be a problem, parents will be informed and we will work with your parents to help ensure punctuality.

Behaviour and School Rules

Our school rules are based upon our aim to be a school that is a friendly, safe and secure place. The rules are there to ensure the welfare of both staff and students and the smooth running of the school.

We are a ‘family’ of 1200 students and one hundred and fifty staff. Our aim is to encourage self-discipline. Our Code of Conduct, written by our students several years ago, is based on respect – of self and others. You all know what behaviours are considered acceptable and you should expect to be told off if you misbehave.

We ask you to walk on the left of the stairs and wait sensibly outside teaching area until you are told to go in. One-way systems are there for your safety, so please follow them.

We expect you to line up outside the dining hall sensibly and wait your turn without pushing and causing a safety hazard.

For Health and Safety reasons the following are not to be brought into school:o Chewing gum and Bubble gumo Cigarettes, matches and lighterso Aerosol cans

Mobile phones may be brought into school but must be switched off and out of sight during lesson time, including CLEMATASS.

If your parents need to contact you, they should contact the school office or leave you a text message that you can read during break/lunchtime or at the end of school.

If you need to contact home, then you should ask permission of a member of staff.

Mobile phones are your responsibility. They should be locked in your locker during practical lessons or may be kept in your blazer pocket at other times. However, we accept no responsibility if you lose it or it ‘disappears’ – so do not leave it laying about.

We do not recommend that you bring iPods into school, but if you do they are your responsibility and, as with mobiles, we will not spend time looking for them if they are lost.

Remember that listening to an iPod on the way home means you are not aware of to any danger signals from traffic etc.

As with mobile phones, iPods may only be used at break and lunchtime If you wish to bring a mobile phone or iPod to school, you will need to sign and

obey the contract.Good behaviour is expected whenever you are in school uniform, and on your way to

Uniform You are required to wear the correct uniform and we are very strict about our

dress code. You may not be able to join the rest of your class if you are not in correct uniform,

but will work in the SIR, Learning Domain Classroom or one of the senior Leaders’ offices.

Skirts should be worn at a sensible length. Blazers should be worn throughout the year and a black V neck jumper or cardigan

may be worn as an extra layer (must be shorter than the length of the blazer). You should organise for your blazer to be washed during a weekend – don’t ask

Mum to do it on Sunday night! No other sweatshirt or ‘hoodie’ should be worn in lessons. Trainers may only be

worn for medical reasons and then we would expect the laces to be tied to give the necessary support.

Black or flesh coloured plain tights, without patterns, should be worn. The regulation school trousers may also be worn instead of a skirt. We do not specify colour of socks or hair bands and these are areas where girls are

able to express their individuality; however, if wearing a skirt, socks must be plain black.

Jewellery Basically no jewellery is allowed. However, you may wear a watch and a pair of

very small stud earrings (about 2-3mm in diameter), one in the lobe of each ear Nose studs, eyebrow bars or any other form of body piercings are no longer

acceptable in school either visible or covered. If you wear any non-regulation jewellery, a nose stud or eyebrow bar you will be asked to remove it. If you cannot remove it then you will not be able to join your normal class.

So if you want to have a piercing, you must wait for the summer holidays – the only time in the year you will have the necessary six week’s healing time.

We reserve the right to confiscate forbidden articles and ask parents to come to school to collect and sign for them.

Recycled UniformWe are grateful to receive items of unwanted uniform in good condition. We may be prepared to buy back items if they can be of use to us. Please ask at the school office. Make-up & Hair Students are permitted to wear make-up but this should be kept to a minimum. Nail varnish is allowed but certain activities may require that you do not wear it (e.g. Food Technology).

Hair must be of natural colour even if dyed; so blue, green, pink etc hair is not permitted

Valuables, Lost Property and Security

Please do not bring expensive items or large sums of money to school. If you have to, then leave them in the school office for safe keeping. The school cannot accept responsibility for loss, theft or damage to personal items. Remember to name those things that you have to bring to school, otherwise leave them at home.

Any property you find should be handed into Students Reception immediately. If you have lost something, please keep enquiring at the caretakers’ office, as most things turn up eventually. Please name everything you have in school. At the end of each term all remaining lost property is destroyed or passed to a charitable organisation.

Please label all items of uniform. We have 1000 blazers and they all look the same! For those who dislike sewing, a black biro marks blazer labels effectively.

Lockers are available for you to hire.

Visitors to the school (including parents/carers) should always come to the office first to sign in and collect a ‘Visitor Badge’

You must not use your mobiles to contact parents during the school day (8.30am - 3.15pm). If there is an emergency you may use the school phone or your own phone with Pastoral Community Head permission. We do not want you phoning because you have been told off or had an argument with your friend. If distressed, you should go to the school office and ask for the duty member of staff to help you.

We ban use of mobiles (texting and phoning) because it causes disruption to classes, parents, and the general running of the school. Research also suggests that there may be health risks associated with mobile phone use, particularly for young people. The school reserves the right to confiscate the phone until the end of the day.

Equipment TargetYou are expected to provide the following basic items of equipment for every lesson: fountain pen, black ball point pen (and a spare!), coloured pencils/fine fibre tips, pair of compasses, calculator, rough notebook/jotter, pencil, pencil eraser, pencil sharpener, ruler 12”/30cm, protractor, reading book, English pocket dictionary, folder to keep letters and loose sheets safe.Everyone’s learning is disrupted if the teacher has to spend time looking for equipment for you to borrow. Make sure you check your school bag before you go to bed so that you are not rushed in the morning.Tippex/liquid paper is not allowed in school and must not be used in any school work.Text books and specialised equipment will be issued on loan and you will be required to pay for any loss or damage to school property.You can buy basic equipment from the School Stationery Shop located in B&E Centre.

Pastoral CareWe are proud of our pastoral care structure which ensures that each of you is treated as an individual and your progress through the school is guided and supported. Since “every child matters” to us, our pastoral care structure ensures that none of you will get lost within the system.

On joining Northfleet School for Girls you are placed in a Base Group with a Base Leader who will get to know you. The Base Leader is the teacher who will be closely involved with all aspects of your school career. The Base Leader plays a crucial role, setting targets for future progress and keeping parents/carers fully informed. Thus, you will have a Key Worker which is usually the Base Leader. Where it is considered beneficial to you, the “Key Worker” may be another member of the school staff.

During CLEMATASS the Base Leader and/or other Key Workers will discuss your progress with you, both in terms of academic and social development, and will set targets for improvement, identifying ways in which these targets may be met.

The Base Leader is one of a team including a Pastoral Community Head and Community Progress & Achievement Leader. The Base Leader and the CPAL/PCH work in partnership with parents to create good, supportive relationships. CPAL/PCH becomes involved in any complex and difficult problems, as well as praising you if you achieve excellence in an area of school life. Where possible the Base Leader and CPAL/PCH remain the same throughout the school. The Community Progress and Achievement Leader is led by the Leader of Progress and Achievement

If your parents are worried about any aspect of your education they should contact the school. Usually the first contact should be with your Pastoral Community Head who will discuss the problem and either deal with it themselves or pass it to another more appropriate member of staff, possibly the Key Worker. We therefore expect you to approach your Base Leader or your Pastoral Community Head to discuss any worries or problems you may have. Please don’t go home and worry your parents before you have talked to one of these people. As you move towards adulthood you will learn to deal with problems yourself.
