Month (CAM)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO HELP STUDENTS APPLY TO AN NSHE INSTITUTION

This document was created to provide pertinent information in one

place for each of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE)

public colleges and universities. Each page details deadlines,

documents, etc. for both the admissions process and financial aid. The

purpose of this document is to provide basic information that you may

need should any of your students wish to apply at any NSHE

institution. Because each institution processes its own applications and

financial aid, it is important to understand the differences, and,

whenever possible, have your students work directly with their chosen

college or university.

GENERAL ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

For all institutions For College Application Month (CAM) in October, all institutional admissions online

applications will be available for the 2020-2021 school year.

Sometimes an institution will require an account be set up on their application portal before a

student can submit an application. It is recommended that students set up accounts with

these institutions prior to the CAM event(s). They may need access to their email accounts

for verification purposes and this is not always possible in the high school setting. At this

time, UNLV, UNR, NSC, CSN, and TMCC require this account set up.

Students should know their driver’s license number, if applicable.

Knowing ACT/SAT scores is helpful. They will also be required to have official scores sent to

the college(s) of their choice. An in-progress high school transcript can be sent in with the

application, although a final high school transcript will be needed at the end of senior year.

Immunization records may be required for admissions at some institutions but should not be

needed at CAM/FAFSA events.

It is helpful if students know the program/major they are interested in pursuing but it is okay

if they are really undecided.

In addition to the general admissions requirements, certain limited entry programs may have

additional selective admissions criteria. See the institutional catalogs for more information.

Student that do not meet the admissions requirements as listed in the various Admissions

Requirements sections, may be admitted through other criteria such as: a combination of test

scores and grade point average that indicate potential for success, special talents and/or abili-

ties such as but not limited to the visual or performing arts or athletic ability, other evidence

of potential for success, improvement in high school record, overcoming adversity or special

hardship, or other special circumstances. The limit of students admitted through this criteria

is 15% of the previous year’s admissions. Contact the Admissions Office for more information.

GENERAL FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

For the 2020-2021 school year, students will need income information for themselves

and their parents from 2018. If the parents are divorced, they should use the parent

that provided at least 51% of their support, not necessarily the parent that claims them

on the tax return.

The student and one parent should create an FSA ID and password, since both are

needed to sign and submit the FAFSA electronically: https://fsaid.ed.gov/ . If students

have this set up prior to the CAM event, they should bring their FSA ID/Password with

them. Once all of a student’s information is entered into the FAFSA, the data can be

saved and a parent can sign electronically when it is convenient.

Information needed: Student’s social security number—it is important that this be

entered correctly. Income/tax returns for 2018. Other forms, if applicable: Student and

parent Federal Tax Returns/foreign tax returns, W-2 forms from all jobs, 1099 forms,

Child Support Documents (paid or received), Food Stamp Award Letter, Untaxed Pen-

sions/Retirement Plans, value of any checking, savings, investment accounts as well as

real estate or business values (not including the home in which the student lives.)

Work Study: If interested, students need to check the box correctly in Section One of

the FAFSA. If the box is not checked, the institution may not offer Work Study to the

student.

Students should check their email and their institutional account, if

applicable, for additional required documents.

The Nevada Promise Scholarship was established by the 2017 Nevada Legislature. This

program will be offered at all of the Nevada community colleges, TMCC, CSN, GBC,

and WNC beginning Fall 2018 for the incoming freshman class. This scholarship will

provide for up to three years of no cost registration fees and other mandatory fees to

eligible students. The program is a “last dollar scholarship” which means it will cover

costs of registration fees and other mandatory fees not met by other gift aid (Pell grant,

SSOG, or the Millennium Scholarship). This program has its own application and

deadlines as well as a few requirements that students will have to fulfill to receive these

funds. Funds are issued on a first come, first served basis. Students will need to apply

for the Promise Scholarship by the deadline of October 31, 2019 .

There are a number of requirements that students will have to meet in order to qualify

for and maintain eligibility for this program. There requirements are listed in the col-

umn to the right. Students should check with the institution for requirements that

might be specific to that

institution. There are also several deadlines that students will have to meet. Students

should check institutional websites for the most recent information.
