A Brief History of Wakefield Park
The Wakefield Park circuit was built by Paul Samuels and John Carter and was opened officially by
John Fahey, the then NSW Premier and member for the Goulburn district in November 1994.
It was built with club motor sport firmly in mind and with the control tower and paddock facilities and carports it made some of our existing circuits look a bit out dated. Track days and supersprints were the usual events with race days for cars, motor bikes and go karts also becoming popular at
the circuit.
At 2.2 kilometres, with an reasonable length straight leading to a section of uphill bends with the loop at the top of the hill and then a downhill run into what became known as the fish hook section and a negatively banked last turn onto the main straight the circuit offered quite a challenge to
achieve a quick lap.
In 2000 the circuit changed hands for the first time with Rob Hodgkinson and Paul Phillips taking over. Soon after the change over the circuit was re-profiled with changes to the fish hook area and the final turn onto the main straight. Both of these changes improved the flow of the circuit, the
fish hook area in particular allowing for a faster run onto the back straight.
Under the new ownership the Wakefield Park licensing and permit system was introduced. This gave clubs a cheaper alternative to CAMS for the running of events and members could also pur-chase a Wakefield licence with which they could compete in events that they may not normally be able to on a level 2 licence. Now the circuit uses the AASA insurance and permit system that which is now being used by a large proportion of motor sport promoters and clubs for events around the
country.
The Speed off the street days that allowed people to drive their own cars on the circuit under the Wakefield licence system, encouraging speed at the right venue and not on public roads were also
introduced and continue today.
From 2001 to 2008 the circuit held a round of the V8 development series, this for many years being the only stand alone round for those cars. The pit lane garages were added at this time, once again
improving the circuit’s facilities.
In January 2007 the circuit was bought by the Benalla Auto Club, the owners of the Winton circuit in country Victoria. At the end of 2008 a major re-surfacing of the circuit took place and this again has led to better lap times. 2010 has seen the introduction of a lighting system at all flag points that will warn drivers of incidents on the circuit and be operated from race control. With the com-plex now managed by Mathew Ronke and ongoing improvements happening the circuit is still a great
club sport venue.
With a great cafe and complete circuit viewing from the spectator
areas enjoy today’s racing.
The current lap record for the circuit is held by Ben Chrithon driving an F3 open wheeler and stands at 54.563 seconds, a fairly
quick time.
Wakefield Park, just another
great part of the Goulburn area.

The sports Sedans are al-
ways a crowd favourite at
Wakefield Park, where the
sight and sound of these
lightweight high powered
high winged monsters is a
spectacle not to be missed.
Championship leader com-
ing into this round is
Bathurst driver Stuart In-
wood, with his AU Ford Fal-
con, a de-registered V8 Su-
percar. Inwood has accumu-
lated 180 points to date, but
just four in arrears is Geoff
Whittaker in his Holden
Commodore VT
Anthony Macready third in
the championship with just
this and another round at
Sydney Motorsport Park re-
maining is still in with a
chance of becoming the
2012 champion in his pretty
Nissan 300ZX, as he is only
ten behind Whittaker.
Showing just how open this
year’s Sports Sedan title has
become is the closeness at
the pointy end of the field,
for the gap between Inwood
at the top of the table and
Simon Copping in fourth is
only 16 points.
Steven Shiels has entered
his Chev Camaro. The
Bathurst driver way back in
10th place in the champion-
ship with 78 points is still
quite capable of causing an
upset this weekend.
Back in 18th place with just
98 points, and seemingly
not in a position to win this
year’s championship, Chris
Jackson will still be one of
the favoured drivers this
weekend in his Holden Cali-
bre.
last state round at Wake-
field Park conducted in late
April, Jackson took pole in
the Calibre, but then the
first race was won by Dar-
ren Saillard a former sprint
car racer driving a Ford Fal-
con BA, and the remaining
two by Macready.
Not only is there excitement
plus at the front of the grid,
but it will be also action
packed down through the
field.
What should be a battle of
epic proportions should be
between three Victorian
drivers in their Under 2 litre
Sports Sedans, David
Runkel in his Proton Satria,
Scott Manson (BMW) and
Shane Howard driving his
Toyota Corolla.

Round 4 NSW state Championships August 11th & 12th 2012
The fourth round of the NSW
Production Touring Car
Championship will be con-
ducted at Wakefield Park
this weekend, with the Pro-
duction Touring Car Cham-
pionship moving from the
sprint rounds to the Endur-
ance phase.
The Production Touring Car
championship is at a very
interesting stage, with only
28 points separating the top
eight, and as such it should
ensure an extremely exciting
weekend of racing at the
Goulburn circuit.
Current championship
leader and defending Pro-
duction Touring Car cham-
pion Bob Pearson has opted
to run the one hour race
solo in the Pro-Duct Mo-
torsports Mitsubishi Evo 8.
Driving solo should not be a
problem for Pearson, for he
is a veteran of endurance
racing with many Bathurst
1000 and 12 hour race
starts to his credit.
However, Central Coast Hol-
den R8 driver Paul Lane is
only 10 points behind the
veteran Sydney driver, and
with Phillip Holden as his co
driver will be out to chase
for a win.
Gosford’s Luke King, cur-
rently third in the 2012
championship only six
points off Lane has engaged
the young Sydneysider
Grant Doulman to share the
driving of his EA Ford Fal-
con.
Doulman is the son of for-
mer Touring Car star Peter
Doulman, and this year has
been driving sports sedans
and he has past experience
in Formula Fords and the
Mini Challenge.
Another two point’s further
back in the championship
pointscore is Tony Virag in
fourth, and he has Steve
Hodges driving with him in
the HSV GTS. Virag went
into the final round of the
2011 championship only one
point behind Pearson, and
he will be out to minimise
the gap this year before the
grand finale.
A former HSV driver, Gerry
Murphy is driving the Jim
Pollicina entered Mitsubishi
Evo 9. Murphy is having a
good season, currently sit-
ting equal sixth in the title
chase, only four points be-
hind Virag, and this week-
end will have Porsche driver
Tom McGann with him in
the Evo, and they should not
be discounted.
There will be other drivers in
the field capable of podium
finishes, and who are not in
contention for the champi-
onship, so they may become
spoilers to those that are
chasing the title.
Among those is Gerry Bur-
gess, a veteran of several
Bathurst 1000’s, and a long
time competitor in produc-
tion racing behind the wheel
of a Mitsubishi Evo 7. He
has the benefit of having his
son Leigh, a well performed
driver from Formula Fords
and Production cars with
him.
20th in the title chase, Rod
Thorpe was thought to be co
-driving with Virag, but has
entered his own GTS and
will be driving solo.
Also in the field is a Ford
XR8 V8 Ute, to be driven by
the Kavich brothers, Ben
who drives in the V8 Ute Se-
ries, and Michael who com-
petes in the HQ races.
