====================================================================Camporee Theme

The black knight (whose symbol is the dragon) has invaded the kingdom of Natchez Trace (whose symbol is the eagle). He has taken the queen and wants to take over the kingdom. It is up to the knights of Natchez Trace to free the queen and to win their freedom back. To do so they must face trials as they prepare for the final battle.

All of the events are designed to help strengthen patrols. So we are asking units to keep the same group of scouts together as a patrol for each event.

Registration

All participants must be registered to attend the Camporee. This includes Boy Scouts, Venturers, Webelos, adult leaders and other adults attending with them, and the volunteer staffers. Webelos can register and may participate in all activities.

Units can register and order their Camporee t-shirts by going to the Middle TN Council website www.mtcbsa.org and click on the “Districts” button. Once there go to the Western Service Area and click on Natchez Trace. Then click onto the calendar and look for the Spring Camporee and click on it. That will take you to the “Double Knot” site for the camporee, and you should be able to register there. That link will be there on November 7, 2014 and units can start registering and ordering their t-shirts at that time. Units having trouble registering should contact the Natchez Trace District Executive Bobby Powell at [email protected].

Forms

Please complete all of the event registration forms in this camporee booklet before the camporee. These forms are designed to help keep the lines down. These forms should be turned in when your unit arrives. Some event leaders may give your patrols a scheduled time for their event. The Scoutmaster and the Senior Patrol Leader will be given the times for these events at the Friday night cracker barrel.

Also, the unit leader must have in his/her possession a completed BSA Health Form for each youth and adult participant. The form is available online at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_ABC.pdf

Note: Part C physical exams by a physician are not required for Camporee participants. Cost

Cost shown is per person Camporee $10.00 (covers patches & port-a-johns)T-shirts $10.00 (optional)

Check-In on Friday

Where to go - Please pay attention to the signs posted as to where to go. Vehicles may be driven to the camp site and unloaded. However, only the vehicle pulling the unit’s trailer may stay in the camp site. There will be NO VEHICLE traffic permitted inside the camping and program areas on Saturday for any reason. This is to ensure the security and safety of all.

Setting Up Your Campsite

Campsites will be handed out on a first come-first serve basis. We are asking troops to camp Jamboree style to keep the campsite area to a controllable size. When setting up, please do not block road access with vehicles or gear.

Water

We are planning to have water buffalos there. However, units should come prepared and bring some potable water with them. At the March roundtable meeting, units will be told if there will be water buffalos at the camporee.

Fires

Ground fires are permitted by units who practice “Leave No Trace” principles. This means the scouts should either bring an above ground fire ring or dig out a fire ring. If your unit digs out a fire ring they should take steps to save the sod to place it back into the fire pit. After the camporee, units should place rocks, logs, and natural debris outside of the camping fields and into the tree line or any other uncut areas.

Check-Out

Camporee is not officially over until after the Sunday service. However, units may leave on Saturday. Be sure to stay until after “The Finale” at the Camporee Trading Post (4:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.) All units are asked to make sure that they check out with the Camporee Staff prior to leaving.

OA Call Out

The Order of the Arrow will be conducting the call out ceremony during the Saturday Camporee camp fire. Unit elections should have been conducted before the Camporee. Units are asked to turn in their list of all OA elected candidates who are attending the camporee to the OA member at the Camporee Trading Post. If your unit has not held its election, please contact the OA member at the Camporee Trading Post.

Page 7: ntbsa.files. Web viewThe Scoutmaster and the Senior Patrol Leader will be given the times for these events at the Friday night cracker barrel. ... Rifle Shooting. Muzzle Loading

Camporee Trading Post

The Order of the Arrow will be run a trading post. All of the profit of the trading post goes toward the Order of the Arrow. The trading post will open on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 and reopen at 1 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Some of the items that will be sold are hamburgers, chips, and drinks. However, the trading post will be closed during the lunch and dinner hours. The camporee staff will be using the trading post during those hours for their meals. They will also be conducting a staff meeting during that time, so we are asking all scouts and leaders to be in their camp site during those hours.

Camporee T-Shirts

Units may pre-order their very own Camporee t-shirt. The t-shirts will be the color “Carolina Blue” and will be a “DryBlend 50 Cotton/50 Poly” t-shirt. The t-shirt will have the same design as the Camporee patch, located on the front cover of this booklet. The cost is S-XL $10, 2XL $11, and 3XL $12. Profit from the t-shirt sales goes to the Order of the Arrow. Units can pre-order their Camporee t-shirt on “Double Knot”. Units will be able to pick up their Camporee t-shirts at the Camporee Trading Post. The cutoff date for pre-orders is March 10, 2015.

Saturday Evening Campfire

The campfire program will consist of Awards and Skits.

No later than 5:00 PM on Saturday the Troop Senior Patrol Leader will present the skit or song idea to the Camporee Committee member at the Camporee Trading Post who will decide if the presentation will be suitable and appropriate. The time limit for each skit is three minutes. Troops with skits or songs will contribute points to their troop’s overall points toward the overall top troop contest.

Camporee Staff

Each unit is asked to provide an adult or Life or Eagle Scout (must be 14 or older). These individuals will be helping to run the Camporee itself. Some of them will also be characters in the skits. They should be dependable and live by example the Scout Oath & Scout Law. Units should submit their names when they register for the camporee. The first 25 staff members will receive a free limited addition Camporee t-shirt. The Camporee Staff will have a pre-Camporee meeting before the Camporee on March 8, 2015. Saturday, during the Camporee, the OA will feed the Camporee staff lunch and dinner. Units having further questions about Camporee staff are asked to contact Richard Cole @ [email protected] or call him at 615 473-6328.

Camporee Evaluation

Please fill out the Camporee Evaluation form contained in this guide before you leave. We would like to have your feedback on the Camporee and how we can make it better for you and your Scouts. Your feedback is important to us, so we can evaluate and make improvements. Please check out with a Camporee staff member when leaving camp.

====================================================================Patrol Competitive Events

Patrols will receive bonus points if they display the Camporee theme at each competition. The more they look and act medieval the more points they get.

ArcheryDo you have what it takes to be a Medieval Archer? Test your skills on the range. Notch your arrow on the bow, draw back the string, take aim at the target, and fire.

Scoring: Points will be based on accuracy. The patrol with the highest points will win. The adjusted score will be calculated by the best score of each boy in the patrol and then average the whole patrol’s score.

Score = X / Y + SX = Total value of best score of each memberY = Total number of patrol membersS = Scout Spirit (0-5)

Crossing the MoatAs a Scout of the Natchez Trace it is your duty to help your king by crossing the moat to take the castle. In order to do this, you must safely cross the moat without falling into the contaminated water that encircles the castle. The distance is approximately 30 feet. Wading or swimming is impossible because of the Zombie alligators and you would drown from the weight of your armor. Luckily, there are several cinder blocks located in the moat between the bank and the castle wall. The patrol may only use the materials available: the cinder blocks in the water; (2) 25' sections of rope; and (two) long planks to cross the moat. Choose your path wisely.

Scoring: This is a timed event. Scouts who fall off the bridge or otherwise touch the "water" are deemed to have been eaten by the Zombie alligators. Scouts not crossing will be seen as eaten. The fastest adjusted time will win. The adjusted time will be calculated based on the following formula:

Score = T - X + ST = Value of the clocked time from start to finishX = Total number of Scouts eatenS = Scout Spirit

Dragon SlayingAs scouts of the Natchez Trace your king has asked your patrol to slay the dragon. Each patrol will be allowed ten pieces of ammunition to slay the dragon. The dragon will have five milk jugs as targets.

Scoring: Each patrol will use the catapult provided to slay the dragon. The dragon will have milk jugs as targets and the patrol will have to use the catapult and ammunition to knock off the milk jugs. All patrol members must be present during this trial. If a patrol doesn’t knock down any of the targets than that patrols Time Score will be zero (0). Patrol will have no more than 5 minutes to slay the dragon. The adjusted score will be calculated based on the following formula:

Page 12: ntbsa.files. Web viewThe Scoutmaster and the Senior Patrol Leader will be given the times for these events at the Friday night cracker barrel. ... Rifle Shooting. Muzzle Loading

Score = T + X + Y + ST = Value of the clocked time from start to finishX = Total number of targets successfully knocked offY = Total number of pieces of ammunition not used in this eventS = Scout Spirit

Knight’s Training

One scout in the patrol will ride the first aid stretcher (BS Handbook pg. 173). At least four other scouts will pick up the stretcher and carry the riding scout through the obstacle course. It is permitted for all of the patrol members to help hold the stretcher. The patrol must complete the whole obstacle course. All patrol members must be present during this trial. If the rider falls, a scout trips, or part of the course is not completed there will be penalty points.

Rules:

1. The first aid stretcher will be provided by Camporee staff (First Aid Stretcher BS Handbook pg. 173). One scout will ride and at least four others will provide the momentum.

2. Once started the patrol should not stop. If the patrol stops (no forward momentum) then the patrol will receive penalty points.

3. The patrol must complete all the obstacles or they will receive penalty points.4. Time will begin at the judge’s signal and end when the patrol returns to where they started.

Scoring:

Score = T + X + S - YT = Value of the clocked time from start to finishX = Total number of obstacles completedS = Scout Spirit (0-5)Y = Total number of penalty points

(Missed obstacles 1 pt., scout tripping 2 pts & rider falling 5 pts)

Patrol Flags

The patrol flag is the symbol of your patrol patch. It can be drawn, sewn, painted, duct taped, or even embroidered onto the flag.

Rules: Displays the patrol symbolDisplays the patrol nameDisplays the Troop or Crew numberEach flag should include each boy’s name. (Recommend a “hangy-downy” with the boy’s name.)

Rescue the Knight

Object: The goal is to provide first aid to an injured individual using materials contained in their 10 essentials (Scout Essentials BS Handbook pg. 264). The injured person must be safely moved 20 yards utilizing a method described in the Scout Handbook.

Rules:

Scouts must identify and use proper first aid to treat and transport methods for an injured person

Scoring: Identifying the injuries Administering the proper first aid Utilizing the proper method for moving an injured party

Troop Competitive Events

Troop camp sites will receive bonus points if they display the Camporee theme. The more they have the medieval feel the more points they get.

Troops will receive points from each patrol competitive event where their patrols compete. The patrols that take 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, their troop will receive more points than the other troops. Troops will receive points for the patrol events as followed 1st place will receive 10 points, 2nd place 8 points, 3rd place 6 points all others will receive 2 points. Troops will receive points from the following patrol competitive events: archery, crossing the moat, dragon slaying, knight’s training, patrol flags & rescue the knight. Troops will receive points for each of their patrols that compete. For example if a troop has four patrols and the four patrols take 1st, 2nd , 3rd place as well as having another patrol compete in one event, than that troop would receive 26 points for that event. Once the competitive events begin scouts will not be permitted to change patrols.

Troops will also receive points for pre-registration and for providing staff members for the Camporee. They will also receive points for having a skit or song for the campfire.

Catapult Competition

Each troop must construct a catapult that can launch a grapefruit or similar size water balloon. It may be brought partially assembled, but the completed assembly must be done on site.

Rules:

1. The catapult must be built of wood that is held together by lashings only. The only exception is with the securing the balloon holder.

2. Only ropes are permitted in lashing the catapult together.3. All catapults will be inspected.4. Catapults must be assembled by start of the lunch period. They will be judged during the

lunch hour.5. The catapult design will be judged for safety first then design. All catapults judged unsafe

will not be permitted to be used and will be disassembled when inspected.

Page 14: ntbsa.files. Web viewThe Scoutmaster and the Senior Patrol Leader will be given the times for these events at the Friday night cracker barrel. ... Rifle Shooting. Muzzle Loading

6. Catapults must be built by youth under the age of 18.7. Each troop will ensure that the construction of the catapult is supervised by an adult.8. No adults are permitted to touch any materials used for the troop catapult.9. Any adults observed touching any materials used on the troop catapult, will result in a major

point reduction for that troop.10. Upon completion, the troop may wish to test fire their catapults. They can do so only if they

get the approval of a member of the Natchez Trace District Spring Camporee Committee or a designated representative. Troops will use their own ammunition when test firing. During the competition event the ammunition will be provided.

Scoring

The catapult overall design, lashing, the accuracy and scout spirit.

Catapult overall design 0 – 5Lashing 0 – 5Accuracy 0 – 15Scout spirit 0 - 5

Scoring

Each troop’s camp inspection points will be added to the troops overall final score.

Tug of War

Object: Pull the opponent over the designated line.

Rules:

1. This will be a single elimination “bracket event”2. Patrols will be placed in their bracket by the number of points they have earned.3. The number of scouts participating is limited to the numerical size of the smaller troop in

each event. We will also make adjustments based on age/size of individuals if necessary to make the event fair.
