ATLAS Questionnaire• What are the most important physics questions you plan

to study at ATLAS over the next 5 – 10 years?

– reduce reaction rate uncertainties for those reactions important in explosive nucleosynthesis (e.g. classical novae, type I XRBs)

– understanding the r-process:• “surrogate” reactions• masses• beta-delayed neutron emission

– p process nuclei– Fusion with nuclei far from stability– Other processes/site: e.g. early stars, s-process, etc.

• How do these questions relate to the present priorities of the field?

– They relate well, addressing multiple questions put forth in The Frontiers of Nuclear Science: A long range plan (2007):• What is the nature of neutron stars and dense nuclear

matter?• What is the origin of the elements in the cosmos? • What are the nuclear reactions that drive stars and

stellar explosions?– Fit in nicely with planned nuclear astrophysics

research at ReA3 and FRIB– Complimentary to research priorities of JINA

• What developments in accelerator capabilities and instrumentation do you envision as being needed to optimize the Nuclear Astrophysics research program at the facility?

– Current developments:• gas target, ionization chamber, APOLLO for HELIOS• new BPT trap for beta-delayed neutron studies• N = 126 factory at CARIBU

– Planned developments:• increased radioactive ion beam intensities and purities• target development to take advantage of high intensities

– Future developments?• multi-user capabilities• neutron detection capabilities?

• Are you interested in actively participating in the development of new instrumentation and capabilities for ATLAS?

– yes: several of the users in the session are actively involved in commissioning of new equipment and are interested in future projects• e.g. APOLLO (LANL), HELIOS ionization chamber (LSU)

– Interest in future planned projects (e.g. AIRIS, AGFA)??
