Gentlemen:
In a telephone call on May 14, 1987, the NRC Staff requested information onthe structural model of the Diablo Canyon containment building. In responseto that request, PGandE has provided the Staff with information on thesimplified dynamic model for the containment structure; the informationconsisted of two data packages which are described below.
Data Package No. 1 contains computer runs for modal analyses of the fixed-basecontainment structure (combined containment shell and the internalstructure). The model is fixed at the bottom of the contaiment basemat. Theresults of these modal analyses are used in the soil-structure interaction(SSI) parametric studies in which the foundation impedances are coupled to thecontainment structure through the basemat.
Data Package No. 2 contains five computer runs. Two of these are modalanalyses of the containment shell standing alone fixed at the top of thecontainment basemat. The remaining three computer runs are modal analyses ofthe internal structure alone fixed at the top of the basemat. The five modalanalyses were performed to obtain the reduced stiffness matrices for theindividual containment shell and internal structure for each of the threedirections.
The data provided in Data Package No. 2 can be used to separately constructthe equivalent modal representation of individual modes for the containmentshell and the internal structure. These modal representations can then becoupled together through the basemat. The inertial properties of the basematwere previously provided with the data for the CLASSI and SASSI foundationmodel.

Two data packages are included in the attachment. Data Package No. 1 containsthree computer runs for three modal analyses, respectively, for the EW, NS,
and vertical directions of the fixed-base (fixed at the bottom of thecontainment basemat El. 68') containment structure (combined containment shelland the internal structure). The results of these modal analyses are thoseused in the SSI parametric studies in which the foundation impedances arecoupled to the containment structure through a rigid basemat.
Data Package No. 2 contains five computer runs. Two of these are,respectively, for the horizontal (same for NS and EW) and the vertical modal
analyses of the containment shell standing alone fixed at the top of thecontainment basemat (El. 91'). The remaining three computer runs are,respectively, for the NS, EW, and the vertical modal analyses of the internalstructure alone fixed at the top of the basemat (El. 91'). The five modal
analyses were performed to obtain the reduced stiffness matrices for theindividual containment shell and internal structure for each of the threedirections.
The data provided in Data Package No. 2 can be used to construct theequivalent modal representation of individual modes for the containment shelland the internal structure separately. These modal representations can thenbe coupled together through the basemat which has an equivalent geometricthickness of 23 ft. The inertial properties of the basemat were previouslygiven among the data for the CLASSI and SASSI foundation models. In the

CLASSI analysis, where a surface foundation was assumed, the inertialproperties of the basemat and the foundation impedances which were calculatedassuming a rigid circular disc, were attached to the base of the containmentstructure (top of the basemat at El, 91') to account for the effect ofembedment of the basemat in the rock.
It should be noted that this model for the containment structure was used forthe SSI parametric study only. The model to be used for generating SSI
response for the containment is a more refined model.
