ICM 2.4 Release NotesDecember 2012
2 Cog Hill DriveSimpsonville, SC 29681
Main Focus – End User Speed
The main focus of this release was to increase speed for end users no matter which version of the map they view (mobile, embed, 508, etc).
We went about accomplishing this by attacking two elements of the speed equation.
1. Global CDN
Fully leveraging Amazon Web Services Content Delivery Network of Edge Locations
• Further reduces physical distance between content and end users anywhere in the world• Enhances redundancies• As AWS continues to roll outnew Edge Locations we willseamlessly add them
aws.amazon.com/about-aws/globalinfrastructure/
2. Better Compression
By reducing the size of the file that has to be downloaded we are able to improve load speeds. This was accomplished through Gzipping and other algorithms that compress and optimize JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheet files.
Before any part of the map loads the JavaScriptneeds to be processed. This makes a large impact on the user experience if ittakes too long for this code to load. 60%+
File size reduction in JavaScript (JS) and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) files.
Overall Speed Improvements
In our testing we are seeing an approximately 66% decrease in map load times.
We aren’t finished yet. 2.4.1 plans to go even further through image compression and better AJAX loading on the mobile map. We believe we can reduce map tile images by ~30%.
508 Compliant Improvements
We discovered and tackled a handful of bugs that we feel
make our 508 compliant map more accessible.
• Added a Page Title
• Defined language of document
• Added “Previous” and “Next” buttons to individual stop pages
• Accessible Map stops pull the first gallery image if primary image is not defined. This is now consistent with the mobile map behavior.
508 Compliant (Cont.)
Search Improvements
We have improved the Legend search to display the results in the same central box. If there is only one result then it takes a visitor directly to that location, and if there is more than one location then it displays the results.
Icons Library Setting
When you add Icons to your map they now use the same “Markers” section of the Library as a Marker does. Before Icons saved into the Images folder and this was confusing for some users.
Enabling New Features
All features in the backend are available now. You will not see any of these features on your published map until you go in and republish your existing map.
New Publish URLs
With these new changes we have also changed the Published URLs. Besides needing to republish your map to take advantage of these changes you will also need to swap out your map’s URL. This includes all variations of your map.
Example Map URLBefore:
http://allofemedia.nucloud.com.s3.amazonaws.com/maps/206/index.html
After:http://cdn.nucloud.com/maps/206/index.html
The red part is what has changed.
Viewing Published Map
Because your map content is now being fully distributed across the globe it can take some time (in testing we are seeing about 15 minutes) to replicate after publishing. If you need to view edits to your published map immediately please use the “View Published Map” button above your map.
Have A Feature Suggestion?
Do you have a feature you would like to see us add? Check out our UserVoice account (link at bottom) or click on the “Feature Request” option in the top right hand corner of the backend. Also you can always send us an email at [email protected].
