PREFACE

Dear Patients and Guests

When I was allowed the privilege to take over our private regimen and rehabilitation center a few years ago, I knew it meant not only an honour, but also a challenge. My grandfather, Dr. Otto Nuhr, who founded the center with his wife Rosemarie in 1954, was a pioneer of high-frequency electrotherapy in Austria. He developed Arsonvalisation therapy, a method that has spread far beyond the borders of our country and that is used with great success in regimen to this very day. My father, Dr. Heinz Nuhr, and my uncle, Dr. Peter Nuhr sr., were able to continue and build on his legacy, as they heralded three more decades of success. And now the baton has been passed down to myself, the grandson, to lead our exclusively family-run center into the future with a third generation of Nuhr doctors. I shall continue the legacy of my forefathers with great respect, admiration and gratitude for the solid foundations that they have given me to work with.

At the same time I feel bound by the pioneering spirit of my grandfather and we therefore conduct our own research projects at the Nuhr Medical Center within the framework of the Karl Landsteiner Society for the Promotion of Medical and Scientific Research. We also do so in order to develop therapeutic measures and concepts for the benefit of our patients and to ensure that we are always at the forefront of medical developments so that we can provide you, our patients, with the best that medicine has to offer. Our Dr. Nuhr method: “Individuality, Intensity and Regularity” has proven itself and guarantees those who come to us in search of healing optimal results.

The focus at the Nuhr Medical Center is always on the patients and by that we mean you! We do not merely see you as a “herniated disc” or “joint pain”, we consider you as a whole, a human being with needs, concerns and distress that have to be addressed, listened to and taken seriously with a holistic approach. Our familiar atmosphere benefits you as our guests, as well as our entire team. Only if people can live, work and interact together at our center, enjoying a sense of well-being, can we create the healing atmosphere that benefits all. We invite you to be our guest so that we can have the opportunity to prove it to you.

Yours sincerely,

University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Your personal medical and therapeutic team

No matter what your therapy needs and wishes, everything here always focuses on you. A personal medical and therapeutic team accompanies you throughout the entire duration of your stay with us, which means that you do not have to deal with a new therapist every day. Your therapist is able to immediately see the effects of the treatment on you and can react accordingly. This increases the satisfaction of both patient and therapist, and establishes a basis of trust.

Three steps to recovery

Your first three steps to recovery at the Nuhr Medical Center:• A thorough medical examination by experienced regimen and

rehabilitation specialists• The development of an individual treatment plan• The definition of a clear treatment outcomeThe intensity and regularity of the treatments are decisive factors for the success of treatments. In addition, it is very important to us that you feel safe and comfortable. Trust in your doctors and therapists, and a familiar atmosphere, are as important for your recovery and the success of your regimen as the professional expertise of the team. Together, we can achieve the desired outcome.

Your recovery is our speciality

The reasons for a rehabilitation or regimen stay at the Nuhr Medical Center include sporting and household accidents, bone fractures, operations, back pain, musculoskeletal problems, the after-effects of a stroke or other neurological complaints, chronic pains and many more. Our understanding of rehabilitation pursues the concrete goal of working with you to achieve the optimal conditions for your reintegration into everyday life.

“The patient is the focus of our attention. A holistic approach to the healing of the individual, personalised therapies and a familiar atmosphere are our recipe for success.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

You are in safe handsThe Nuhr Medical Center specialises in the treatment of• Musculoskeletal complaints• Spinal and intervertebral disc disorders• Rheumatic diseases• Circulatory disorders• Central and peripheral paralysis• Secondary damage after a stroke• Chronic pains• Fibromyalgia• Neurovegetative disorders• Sports injuries• Post-treatment of joint procedures,

for example, artificial joint replacements• Prevention

Your individual treatment plan

After a thorough medical examination and diagnosis, we develop an individual treatment plan that tailors precisely to your specific needs. That also includes seriously taking into consideration you as a person, with all your concerns and needs. Our comprehensive and continuous care takes into account body, mind and soul, improves your personal well-being and ensures a speedy recovery.

Physiotherapy | 7

Counteracting poor posture

Sitting or standing for long periods with no or little movement comes at a price: The muscles in your neck and shoulders become tense, and poor posture and pain may be the consequences. Regular exercise helps to restore your physical and mental well-being, and provides the body with a gentle reminder of its self-healing powers.

Individual physiotherapy

Our physiotherapy is not group therapy either, it consists of personalised exercises tailored to the specific needs of the individual. A personal therapist accompanies you throughout the entire duration of your stay. Personalised physiotherapy consists of specific exercises and therapy for the rehabilitation and recovery of the musculoskeletal system. In addition, it strengthens the muscles and results in a general increase in strength. Targeted training is used to stimulate and painlessly overcome muscular deficiencies in the musculoskeletal system, for example, after traumatic events and operations, or even treat chronic pain symptoms (e.g. chronic back pain). As with active exercise therapy, medical training therapy is also prescribed by the doctor and takes place under constant therapeutic instruction and personal supervision. Patients work, for example, with a ball or TheraBand, and equipment that has been specially developed for medical training therapy. The equipment is computer-aided and facilitates the accurate monitoring and analysis of the individual training exercises.

Our speciality: Therapeutic climbing

Climbing fosters coordination, fitness and mental strength. Practically no other therapy allows for such concentrated and integrated exercising of all muscles. Besides muscular strength, other abilities, such as orientation, balance, courage, determination and mental endurance are also called upon to reach the summit when climbing. You do not have to be a well-trained athlete to have a go on the climbing wall. Your personal therapist will help you to exercise according to your specific needs and proficiency. Therapeutic climbing therefore does not know any age limit either. The method has proven itself as an ideal complementary therapy in the treatment of patients with orthopaedic problems. We have also achieved

excellent results with patients with hemiplegia after a stroke, coordination disorders due to cerebral damage, multiple sclerosis and impaired motor coordination within the context of neurorehabilitation, chronic pains and impaired balance. The therapeutic climbing walls at the Nuhr Medical Center are between 2.50 to 3.20 metres high and are equipped with all safety measures necessary. The sense of achievement gained when climbing has been proven to affect the entire well-being of the body and mind.

When the back goes on strike

Exercise therapy is often the best way to get a troubled back working again. The complaints are often due to lack of movement or poor posture, which have an effect on the health of the back and lead to herniated discs and muscular tensions. In many cases, these can be attributed to wear and abrasion or non-specific back pains, whose cause cannot be immediately detected with the help of X-ray diagnostics or MRI scans (magnetic resonance imaging). The medical team at the Nuhr Medical Center specialises in all types of (back) pain. We work to eliminate the complaints with individual training, such as Dorn and Breuss spinal therapy, Tilscher back training and many other therapies. Kinesio taping provides additional stimulation for the skin receptors and helps to stabilise muscular tension. We also offer individual programmes that are specially tailored to the needs of expecting mothers, who are experiencing back pains in the later stages of their pregnancy.

“Our therapeutic climbing is suitable for all age groups. It demands physical stamina and fosters mental equilibrium.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Spectacular CurrentsThe use of electric currents has a long tradition in pain therapy. The Nuhr Medical® Center exclusively offers the Arsonvalisation therapy developed by Dr. Otto Nuhr.

“Arsonvalisation therapy requires extensive experience and a great deal of feeling in the fingertips. We are proudto be one of the very few therapy centers capable of offering it.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Page 9: Nuhr · My grandfather, Dr. Otto Nuhr, who founded the center with his wife Rosemarie in 1954, was a pioneer of high-frequency electrotherapy in Austria. He developed Arsonvalisation

The “heart” of pain therapy

Renowned researchers such as Hertz and Tesla already experimented with the phenomenon of electric current during the 19th century. One of their contemporaries, the French physiologist Jacques-Arsène d’Arsonval, discovered that high-frequency currents could also be used for therapy. These so-called Arsonval currents refer to alternating currents, with frequencies ranging from 100 to 1,000,000 Hz, which do not produce any heat. Despite the high voltage, these Arsonval currents are both harmless and have a healing effect. The founder of the Nuhr Medical Center in Senftenberg, Dr. Otto Nuhr, refined this form of treatment and developed an electrode that resembled a bristly shower head. The local application of high-frequency therapy according to the Dr. Nuhr method involves this brush-like electrode that emits a glow being applied to the body. In addition to the considerable technical requirements, the treatment also requires extensive experience and a subtle form of empathy. The treatment is therefore only offered and used successfully in a few therapy centers worldwide. Dr. Otto Nuhr’s modified Arsonvalisation is also known as 100,000 volt therapy by “insiders” at the Nuhr Medical Center and constitutes the “heart” of pain therapy.

Why 100,000 volts work

High-frequency therapy according to the Dr. Nuhr method has a positive effect on the overriding control mechanisms of the body. One particularly striking discovery was its effect on the hormone cortisol when applied within the scope of a regimen. This could also be verified by scientific research headed by the renowned “regimen expert” University Professor Dr. Wolfgang Marktl from the Institute for Medical Physiology and Environmental Physiology at the University of Vienna. Cortisol is one of the so-called stress hormones. Its functions include energy metabolism and activating a range of functions to allow the body to deal with greater demands, as well as the activation of self-healing.

Patient research on Arsonval treatment

The effects of the Arsonvalisation therapy are subject to constant research. The Nuhr Medical Center, headed by University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr collected data in a study to manifest the effects of the Arsonval treatment. During a two-week regimen stay, two groups of patients were examined to see if there were any changes. The only difference between the physical and rehabilitative therapy received by both groups was that one group was also treated with Arsonval currents. The findings showed that in addition to a significant reduction in the intensity of the pain, the group that underwent the Arsonval treatment also seemed to benefit from the effect of a brighter mood. In the other group, the effects were limited to changes in the intensity of the pain and did not have an effect on the mood. A further striking tendency that was discovered during a one-month follow-up check-up was that the intensity of the pain continued to decrease after the therapy. The

observed changes were in line with those of earlier studies that showed an increase in cortisol production in addition to a reduction in pain.

Otosan – the exclusive high-frequency therapy

The Nuhr Medical Center is the only medical center to offer the Otosan treatment. The treatment is a special form of high-frequency therapy that is applied with particular success in the case of frontal and paranasal sinuses. It can therefore also be used to treat chronic infections and inflammations of the nasal mucosa with success.

10 | Electrotherapy

Direct and alternating currents improve blood circulation, stimulate weakened muscles and relieve pain. What is important is the choice of the right method and frequency.

Electrifying Impulses

“The use of electric currents in the hands of an experienced doctor is an often proven and particularly effective remedy in physical medicine.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Pain relief and improved circulation

For many people, contact with electric currents brings back unpleasant memories: electric fences on farms, short circuits in household appliances or all sorts of other painful encounters. However, the use of electric currents in the hands of an experienced doctor is an often proven and particularly effective remedy in physical medicine. It is differentiated between treatments with a mainly pain-relieving component and treatments with a mainly blood circulation-improving effect, as well as treatments for muscle stimulation in the case of weakened muscles.

Electrotherapy is not synonymous with electricity

All electrotherapeutic methods have in common that direct or alternating currents flow into the body or parts of the body during treatment. The corresponding voltage is introduced either using electrodes that are connected to and conduct via the skin surface or through electrodes in a water bath. Depending on the form of application, the primary effect is either the alleviation of pain or a stimulating effect with muscle contraction and subsequent muscle relaxation. As a result, circulation is improved, swelling is reduced and muscles are relaxed. Whether high-frequency, medium-frequency or low-frequency currents are used depends on the medical condition of the patient and the selected method. The Nuhr Medical Center offers a wide range of electrotherapeutic methods, so we can therefore find the suitable methods or method blends for all conditions. These include, for example:

Cell bath: Electrical currents flow through the water, in which the hands and/or feet have been placed. The Nuhr Medical Center recommends this method for joint pains in the hands or feet, in the case of radiating pains in the arms and legs, and loss of sensation in the feet.

Stangerbad (hydroelectric bath): A hydroelectric bath in a special bathtub made of plastic with graphite electrodes that conduct a weak direct current through the body. Medication may also be added to the water. Heating, the body’s buoyancy in the water and, last but not least, the resorption of the medication via the skin improve the blood circulation of the skin and the underlying muscles, and enhance metabolism. It

is used for muscle tensions, back pain, shoulder, arm and leg complaints, sciatica, arthrosis and other rheumatic diseases.

Threshold current: Threshold current is a medium-frequency current that takes the skeletal muscles to a specific and measured level of tension, and thus not only prevents muscular atrophy, but also promotes muscle growth. The use of metal-compatible low-frequency therapy equipment means that implants such as artificial joints, can also be treated by certain forms of current without risk.

Iontophoresis: This is a form of direct current treatment and is used to introduce ionic medicinal compounds into the body. The effect of the galvanic current is thus pharmacologically reinforced.

The following methods are also used where required:

• Galvanic currents• Exponential current• TENS• Stimulation current or pulse current• Stereodynator®

Applications for electrotherapy• Pain syndromes in the musculoskeletal system• Muscle tensions and pulls• Muscle weakness and myoparalysis after accidents• Muscle weakness after surgical procedures

(e.g. arthroscopy of the knee)• Muscle weakness after longer periods of inactivity

(e.g. when bed-ridden)• Muscle weakness and muscle paralysis caused by

neurological disorders• Incontinence with weakness or paralysis of the pelvic floor

or bladder muscles• Metabolic problems• General immune deficiency

12 | Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is an incredibly versatile healer. It plays a key role in rehabilitation at the Nuhr Medical® Center: Aqua fitness is an optimal form of exercise for all age groups.

The Powerful Element

Page 13: Nuhr · My grandfather, Dr. Otto Nuhr, who founded the center with his wife Rosemarie in 1954, was a pioneer of high-frequency electrotherapy in Austria. He developed Arsonvalisation

Gentle and weightless

Therapies in water have many positive effects: They affect the entire nervous system, musculoskeletal system and organs. They relieve pain, stimulate metabolism and circulation, activate the immune system, improve breathing and skin elasticity and relieve all sorts of muscle tension. Aqua fitness trains stamina, heart and circulation, and strengthens the entire musculoskeletal system, and it is five times more effective than exercise outside water. The main reason for this is buoyancy in the “wet element”. Although the resistance of water is 900 times higher than that of air, movement and specific exercises in water are both gentle and highly efficient thanks to weightlessness. Exercises in water are conducted slowly and fluently. The resistance of the water prevents sudden and jerky movements. As a result, the risk of injury is minimal, which makes it highly suited to both patients suffering from back problems and women during pregnancy. Professional and amateur athletes also value the “healthy” properties of water. Coordinated, weightless movement also improves our sense of balance and sharpens concentration.

Special hydrotherapies

We use the joint-relieving effects of water in our in-house swimming pool for the widest variety of physiotherapeutic exercises. Besides general buoyancy aids, our therapists also use a wide range of training equipment for exercises in the water. In addition, the very pleasant water temperature of 32°C ensures optimal thermotherapy and kinesitherapy with minimum stress on heart and circulation.

The pebble pool is an independent and uneven area of the swimming pool with small stones at the bottom. Walking in the pebble pool improves coordination and balance. Water buoyancy and the handrail allow all joints to be stressed and strengthened without risk after accidents of surgical procedures.

The cervical pull is a spinal column extension in the hot water tub with a temperature of approximately 34°C. The tension is provided by the reduced body weight due to buoyancy. The application is used wherever a careful extension of the spinal column is necessary. The cervical pull does not look very inviting at first glance for some patients, but it achieves excellent results with maximum muscle relaxation. Its relaxing and soothing effect has already convinced many a patient.

The lumbar underwater extension is a stretching treatment for the lumbar spine in the hot water tub. It supports muscle and tissue relaxation, and can contribute to significant pain relief.

Relaxing in the tub

Hot baths (up to 37°C) combined with the widest variety of massage methods, stretching or electric current have a relaxing and soothing effect. As a result of the improved blood circulation, the immune system is strengthened, the lymphatic flow and the elimination of toxins from the body is promoted and the supply of nutrients to the cells is improved. The underwater jet massage is used mainly to counteract muscle shortening and tensions.

14 | Mechanotherapy

Remedial massage is one of the oldest forms of therapy in history. Its healing powers achieve their effect through the correct dosage and individual, caring and continuous treatments by the therapists.

“Our new regulation therapy allows therapists a more specific, intensified and efficient collaboration with the patients than can be achieved by using a single measure.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Brand new: Manual regulation therapy according to the Dr. Nuhr method

Decades of experience from manual therapy medical examinations and corresponding diagnoses show that complaints among a large number of patients seeking healing are not exclusively the result of muscular tensions, but also due to other factors, such as spinal and joint blocks, problems with bones, cartilage, ligaments or connective tissue. Complex phenomena require complex therapy concepts. This was in any case the conclusion of University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr and why he decided to create a new method that allows therapists a more specific, intensified and efficient collaboration with the patients than can be achieved by using a single measure: It is called manual regulation therapy according to the Dr. Nuhr method. The new regulation therapy combines certain techniques from classic remedial massage, orthobionomy and the Dorn-Breuss method with cupping therapy and healing currents, in order to offer equal treatment to all of the disharmonies in the affected area of the body. Manual regulation therapy is used mainly to treat complaints concerning the cervical and lumbar spine. The massage strokes and techniques that are applied by the therapists are precisely defined, standardised and certified. The Nuhr Medical Center now uses a single therapy to achieve the softening of muscles, loosening of connective tissue and mobilisation of joints that previously required a range of different treatments. Another pleasant side effect for the patients is that the new regulation therapy prepares them optimally for physiotherapy.

The Nuhr Medical Center naturally also offers all other established methods of mechanotherapy. These include:

Remedial massage: This treatment uses specific massage strokes to stimulate through pressure or tension. Muscles, subcutaneous tissue and connective tissue are massaged. In addition, the therapy zone can also be prepared using cold packs or cold gas. The effect is a stimulation of circulation and metabolism, pulse, breathing and sleep, and the regulation of the blood pressure. It also has a positive effect on neuralgia, painful muscular tensions, rheumatic muscle diseases and muscle weaknesses.

Connective tissue massage: This is a therapy for medical conditions that can be influenced with reflex treatments through the stimulation of the corresponding connective tissue zones.

Cervical spine traction massage: This is a combination of massage, slight manual traction and isometric exercises.

Lymph drainage: This is used to support and stimulate the discharge of blocked lymph (tissue fluid) by using special massage techniques and drainage strokes.

Reflex zone massage: This is based on the principle that specific points in the hands and feet relate to nerve tracts and organs and that various disorders can be positively influenced by massaging these points.

Apparatus-based mechanotherapy

Traction: The mechanical extension of the spinal column causes an extension of the intervertebral space, reduction of the intervertebral disc pressure and consequently, relief to the irritated nerve root.

Vibro-extension: This is a stretch treatment with a simultaneous mechanical vibration massage of the spinal muscles. The effect is intensified by the simultaneous application of hot air. It is applied in the case of painful spinal syndromes.

16 | Complementary Medicine

The Nuhr Medical® Center considers body, mind and soul as one. We therefore also apply a wide range of complementary medicine methods to support the regeneration and healing process.

Whole-Souled Holism

“The forces of nature and complementary medicine concepts provide holistic support for the mobilisation of self-healing.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Complementary Medicine | 17

The elixir of life – oxygen therapy according to Professor Ardenne

Oxygen is the fuel of the cells in our body. The human being can survive for weeks without nutrition and days without water, but dies after three minutes without oxygen. German Professor Manfred von Ardenne discovered that the absorption and utilisation of oxygen reduces with age and can be less than half of that in one’s youth in the event of illness or disease. Burdens such as physical or mental stress, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, alcohol and environmental pollutants reduce oxygen intake. The utilisation of oxygen can be improved considerably by providing the body with excess oxygen over a certain period of time (four to five times more than in normal air). Long-term effects can be achieved with weak, ill and elderly patients, as the lack of oxygen in their cells is particularly prevalent. The increased supply of oxygen or therapies with brine and/or aerosols can take place either passively or actively through inhalation via a mask during active exercise on a cycle ergometer (Motomed therapy). It is suitable for patients who are seriously unfit and exposed to increased levels of stress, and who have low levels of oxygen concentration in their blood. In medical inhalation therapy, medication is inhaled in gaseous form with oxygen.

Slow “turbo” – pulsed electromagnetic field therapy

Extremely slow-pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can have a positive effect on the healing process. The effectiveness of pulsed magnetic therapy (PMF) on the stimulation of bone growth has been verified by countless studies. Particular effects are improved mineralisation and accelerated bone healing, for example, after a fracture. The method has also been successfully used to treat spinal disorders, arthritis and osteoporosis. The most likely initial effect is however pain relief. Additional effects, such as improved mobility in the case of arthrosis, a decrease in swelling in the case of arthritis and a reduction of bone loss in the case of osteoporosis then come later.

Return to harmony with orthobionomy

The therapist returns the body to its ideal state through gentle and painless impulses. Orthobionomy does not manipulate, but rather helps the human body to develop in its Individuality. By doing so it achieves an original understanding of the poor or relieving posture, a causal solution and pain relief. Gentle exercises support the retention of a harmonious posture.

Self-healing impulses – cranio-visceral therapy

This combination of craniosacral therapy and visceral osteopathy has an effect on all structures of the musculoskeletal system, using mainly gentle massage strokes to the cranium and sacrum, and also treats the organs of the chest, stomach and pelvic areas, as well as the neighbouring connective tissue. This stimulation has an effect on all tissues and body fluids, and eliminates any existing functional disorders of the human body, whilst also activating self-healing powers.

Far Eastern influences

The Nuhr Medial Center also offers Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies (TCM) to complement and support the regeneration and healing process. Acupuncture and laser acupuncture treatments aim to remedy the disturbed flow of energy. Tuina therapy is a manual therapy massage form that complements acupuncture treatments and increases their effectiveness. In certain cases, we also use Moxa therapy, which applies heat to specific points of the body.

Prevention is our concern

Preventive medicine is a major concern to University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr, as many illnesses and diseases can be avoided with the corresponding lifestyle, a balanced diet, regular exercise and knowledge on how to reduce stress. These include cardiovascular diseases, a wide range of metabolic disorders and musculoskeletal complaints. A conscious change in everyday habits can have a major effect, particularly during their early stages. The medical and therapeutic team at the Nuhr Medical Center can work with you to develop an individual therapy programme based on your needs that can also be applied in your everyday life at home.

Fitness check-up with weight management

Our medical and therapeutic team can compile an individual preventive programme based on a thorough cardiological check-up with an echocardiography, exercise ECG, 24-hour outpatient blood pressure monitoring and the consideration of risk factors. Areas of focus include medical training therapy and a sustained change in dietary habits. The “Premium Health” holistic diet and fitness programme is suited to all age groups, and results, in addition to sustained weight loss, in a greater quality of life and healthier everyday life. The major advantages are no crash diets, a truly individual programme under medical supervision and sustained success without the yo-yo effect, because weight loss does not occur at the expense of lust for life and good health. The problem with conventional diets is that their effect is often only short-term and they usually reduce muscle mass rather than body fat. The “Premium Health” programme is on the other hand based on medical and nutritional research, and focuses on losing weight where it is necessary – both in the individual areas of the body as well as in body fat, and not in muscles.

The Dr. Nuhr spinal check-up

Many diseases and disorders of the musculoskeletal system need not occur in the first place. The Dr. Nuhr spinal check-up allows undesirable developments to be detected at an early stage and uses the appropriate therapies to put the patient back on the right track. Workplace-related poor posture or disorders often only require minimal, yet specific, therapeutic action in order to prevent permanent damage. Urban life, computer games, obesity due to poor diets and far too little exercise are the most frequent causes of severe poor posture among children and adolescents. It is particularly essential during the growth phase that the body is stressed correctly in order to ensure that it develops properly and poor posture problems are avoided, e.g. by diagnosing and treating poor posture and malposition, such as scoliosis among children and adolescents, at an early stage. An examination of the current state of health of the musculoskeletal system is recommended at regular intervals.

Preventive Medicine | 19

The Dr. Nuhr spinal check-up – preventive medicine for all• Children and adolescents: The evaluation of the current

condition and initiation of the correct measures are essential to a healthy development and can prevent later damage.

• Women: Women have to deal with entirely different stresses on their musculoskeletal system to men, for example, as a result of pregnancies. Timely and gender-based consultation can help to avoid pain and aches.

• Professionals with work-related stresses: Our therapists help them to optimise and modify the movements that cause excess stress.

• The 50 plus age group: Preventive check-ups to identify the risk of rheumatism and avoid osteoporosis.

“The timely and sensible application of preventive medicine seriously increases your chances of a long, healthy life.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

20 | Pain Medicine

Chronic pain can often turn the affected person’s life into torture. Treating the pain with medication is important, but only results in short-term success if the root cause of the pain is not identified. That is why we address the root cause of the pain at the Nuhr Medical® Center.

Pain in Check

Pain therapy according to the Dr. Nuhr method

The treatment of pain according to the Dr. Nuhr method relies on an individual and broad range of therapy methods that are not limited to a single field or discipline. A thorough examination and identification of the root cause are therefore always the first step of our pain therapy. We work with the patient to develop an individual therapy that contains, where necessary, drug therapy, but above all, treatments from the fields of physical medicine, complementary medicine and exercise therapy. It is the conviction of University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr that analgesic drugs are often prescribed too quickly and unnecessarily. Pain therapy at the Nuhr Medical Center therefore applies a sustainable approach that is tailored to the needs of the patient and almost side effect-free.

Illuminating – low-level surface laser therapy

Laser light is light with special physical properties that is characterised by a strikingly high level of energy. Low-level surface laser therapy is a regulation therapy that has a positive effect on the metabolism of the body cells through radiation. Various biochemical processes are activated in the cell, the defence mechanisms are improved and consequently, the healing process is accelerated. Excellent therapeutic results can be achieved in the case of certain diseases and disorders, for example, blood circulation disorders, wear and abrasion of joints and the spine, nerve lesions, skin diseases (e.g. shingles), poorly healing wounds or migraine. Surface laser therapy has particularly positive effects when it comes to pain alleviation, anti-inflammatory effects, the acceleration of wound healing, lowering the risk of infection and reducing swelling.

Cold against the pain

At the Nuhr Medical Center we use special methods to remove heat from the tissue. Applications that use a temperature below 0°C are referred to as cryotherapy and those above 0°C are called cold therapy. By using them, one can achieve localized hypothermia in the tissue for therapeutic purposes. Cold applications limit the nerve conduction velocity, have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body and reduce pain.

How the cold works

Cold therapy makes use of the fact that blood vessels constrict, muscles become tense, the outflow of liquid from blood and lymph vessels is reduced, and the blood supply to the skin is lessened, when stimulated by the cold. As a result of the reduced temperature of the body, the activity of the inflammation mediators is inhibited; however, blood circulation is subsequently increased. As a result, the pro-inflammatory mediators are eliminated from the body. As the reflexes of the nervous system are generally also diminished by the cold, the sensitivity to pain under the skin, for example, in the joints and muscles, is also reduced. Extended stimulation by cold reduces muscle activity, lowers muscle tension and relieves cramps.

Cold gas therapy for sensitive patients

Cold gas therapy uses the evaporation of nitrogen to obtain cold gas. Dry ice is also suitable for patients who are sensitive to the cold. Application areas for cold gas therapy are musculoskeletal disorders, such as acute spinal and joint complaints. Cold applications are recommended within the scope of pain therapy after operations, injuries to ligaments, joints and muscles, spinal and joint diseases, spastic muscle tensions or rheumatic diseases. At the beginning of cold gas therapy, the patient first feels coldness, then a light burning sensation and finally no pain. This effect is explained by the influencing of individual sensors in the skin and subcutis.

Successful applications for bio-feedback• Pain syndromes (chronic back pains, migraines,

headaches)• Cardiovascular diseases• Circulatory disorders (Raynaud’s disease)• Anxiety or panic attacks• Stress• Functional disorders• Psychosomatic complaints• Incontinence

Dynamic processes

Health and sickness are not two static states, but rather oscillate between two poles. Where the pendulum strikes depends on complex processes. Biological factors play as much a role as the psychological state, social living conditions and confidence of the individual in at least influencing them to a certain extent. As unequivocal as the terms health and sickness might seem, they are interpreted very differently. For some, health is defined as being free of any physical complaints, while to others it is equivalent to well-being and happiness. Others still see in it the ability of the human body to overcome stresses. In any case, health is a dynamic process that can be redefined from one second to the next by the behaviour of the individual, preventive and corrective measures, and also their thinking and inner attitude.

Intrinsic relationships

Constant psychological stress is more often than not the cause of poor posture, which as a consequence, may lead to painful tensions (headaches, migraine) and back problems. Chronic stress can lead to the long-term development of high blood pressure if it is not processed properly. Anxiety and feelings of helplessness and loneliness can weaken our body’s defence mechanisms and untreated chronic pains can develop into a medical condition of their own that also seriously affect the psychological state.

The focus on the patient

Mental equilibrium, a balanced diet and natural physical fitness form the cornerstones of good health. At the Nuhr Medical Center our focus is on the patient as a whole. Individual care, expert advice and specific treatments tailored to the needs of our patients support them in their quest for a general state of well-being. Part of this, is actively listening to and being aware of problems, as well as providing comprehensible explanations with regard to possible solutions and an altogether more careful treatment of every individual patient by our medical and therapeutic team.

Bio-feedback – positively influencing body functions

Bio-feedback equipment can record a large number of signals from the body and provide information on the activities of the autonomic nervous system. They can, for example, measure muscle or muscle group tension, autonomous signals such as heart and respiratory rate, skin conductance level, skin temperature, blood pressure or peripheral blood circulation. The bio-feedback device amplifies these processes using surface electrodes and translates them into acoustic and visible signals.

The aim of these treatments is to recognise the relationships between thoughts, feelings and bodily reactions, and to have the opportunity to influence these. We often only realise that something is wrong when the complaint is already upon us. Bio-feedback makes these processes conscious and visible, and puts the subject in the position to actively influence them. As a result, pain that is caused and amplified by increased (subconscious) muscular tension or imbalance – often due to poor or relieving posture, autonomic hyperarousal due to chronic stress or anxiety-provoking thoughts – can often be reduced and sometimes even avoided entirely.

24 | Regimen and Rehabilitation

In contrast to the nature of the regimen, rehabilitation has the concrete goal of establishing the optimal conditions for life after an illness or disease and to support the patient’s reintegration into everyday life.

Regimen and Rehabilitation | 25

The regimen is a preventive measure

Regimen have tradition, but they should under no circumstances be confused with a holiday at a spa. Regimen are an essential and supplementary component in preventive medicine. They are often the method of choice when someone has performed heavy physical labour over many years and placed a severe strain on the musculoskeletal system. Classic regimen also treat poor posture and complaints that have resulted from sitting or standing for long periods. Other potential risk factors such as obesity, cardiovascular complaints, high blood pressure, etc. can also be remedied within the scope of a regimen and corrected with an individual therapy programme. Such regimen are first and foremost a preventive measure. At the Nuhr Medical Center we achieve the best success with our applications through intensity and regularity. A regimen is a medically supervised time out from everyday life, during which an individual can not only improve their physical well-being, but also rediscover their own rhythm.

Rehabilitation – return to independence

Hospital visits today are kept as short as possible, regardless of whether after surgical procedures, accidents or acute internal cases such as heart attacks or strokes. Instead patients are usually prescribed or recommended rehabilitation measures after the hospital stay. The aim of this is to rebuild the health of patients under therapeutic supervision so that they can subsequently return to their professional lives or regain the greatest level of independence possible. The medical experts at the Nuhr Medical Center develop an individual therapy programme for every single rehabilitation patient. Continuous and comprehensive supervision allows patients to recover faster and enhances their well-being – it ranges from physical and pain therapies all the way to practical tips on how to master everyday life independently.

The elderly patient

The aim of specialised rehabilitation for elderly patients, which takes into account multimorbidity (co-existence of multiple chronic conditions), is to restore personal independence and prevent the need for nursing care after a major illness or disease. Rehabilitation occurs under the intensive supervision of a team specialised in geriatrics and following a standardised geriatric examination and evaluation of the functional deficits. Intensive rehabilitation phases are required mainly by elderly patients after strokes or accidents involving a fall.

Flexible programmes

The regimen and rehabilitation programmes at the Nuhr Medical Center are tailored to the needs of its patients and are offered as both inpatient and outpatient therapies, in so far as the patients’ condition permits outpatient treatment. Working patients or those looking after children are given appointments for treatments in the morning or evening where possible. We do not offer predefined treatment packages. After the initial thorough examination, the doctor coordinates with the patient to develop a therapy programme that is tailored precisely to their needs. The focus is on the intensity and regularity of the treatments, that means that the therapies occur daily and always with the same therapists.

“An operation is only as successfulas the subsequent rehabilitation.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Rheumatism | 27

Rheumatism has many facets

People use the word “rheumatism” to refer to all sorts of pains in joints. In actual fact, the term refers to about 450 different medical conditions, whose progression and prognosis all vary. The most well known of these are arthrosis and arthritis.

Inflammatory processes

Rheumatoid arthritis (also known as chronic polyarthritis) is the most common inflammatory disease of the joints and affects mainly the joints of the hands, knees, shoulders, feet and hips. The affected joints swell up and are often reddened and excessively warm. The progression of the disease is often intermittent, whereby an episode can last from a few weeks to months.

Cartilage wear and abrasion

Arthrosis is the degradation of joints due to wear and abrasion, and old age. Besides excessive stress, earlier injuries (meniscus damage), congenital or acquired joint deformities (knock-knees or bowlegs) or deformations (e.g. hip dysplacia) can also be common causes of arthrosis. It can also occur as a consequence of another disease, for example, a joint inflammation (arthritis), or accompany bruising caused by excessive stress. Contrary to chronic polyarthritis, arthrosis afflicts a large number of people. The risk of contracting arthrosis increases with age. Highly stressed joints, such as hips, knees and shoulders, or the spine (spondylarthrosis) are mainly affected. An acute pain during stress that subsides after relief is typical. Abraded cartilage particles can also lead to painful inflammations. About two thirds of people over the age of 65 are affected by the disease; however, not all who are affected also suffer from the symptoms.

The quirks of the back

Whereas joint pains affect mainly older people, back pains affect people of all ages. Professions that place a one-sided strain on the body or a general lack of movement can result in the back going on strike. If poor posture and excessive stress are not quickly corrected by learning how to move properly, chronic back pains are unavoidable. The regular Dr. Nuhr spinal check-up prevents severe problems.

Rheumatism therapies in a nutshell

The earlier individual problems can be diagnosed and tailored therapies applied, the sooner the alleviation of pain and activation can be expected. The Nuhr Medical Center offers comprehensive therapies for both acute as well as chronic complaints of the rheumatic spectrum disorder. The use of specific therapy programmes can not only stop joint degeneration, but also ensure joint mobility. The therapies are tailored to the precise needs of the individual patients. Pain alleviation is achieved primarily through complementary therapies and the widest variety of physical therapies. University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr sees these not as “competing” against basic medicinal therapy, but as supporting them. They can often result in a reduction in the medication whilst still alleviating pain.

“The earlier the patients’ individual problems can be diagnosed, the sooner we can help with therapy and reactivate them.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Internal and Neurological Rehabilitation | 29

Preventive measures

Cardiovascular diseases are among the most common diseases in the Western World. Their occurrence is increasingly wide-spread among older adults and yet most heart attacks could be avoided by preventive measures. One of the key areas of focus of internal medicine at the Nuhr Medical Center is therefore the prevention and treatment of risk factors that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Minimising the risks

Stress, smoking, alcohol, poor diets, lack of movement and diabetes increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A balanced diet with many vital nutrients, regular movement, stress reduction and a mental balance are protective factors. We perform a thorough cardiological examination to gain a comprehensive picture of the current cardiovascular condition and develop an individual programme on the basis of the results. The key areas of focus are medical training therapy and a sustained change in dietary habits. If necessary, medicinal therapy is also used. Goal-oriented therapies require regular supervision by the doctor. Follow-up examinations within specified intervals serve to monitor and also allow for adjustments or changes in order to achieve the desired goals.

Neurological rehabilitation

Neurology is characterised by a complicated variety of diseases, respectively, their consecutive symptoms. It deals with the diagnostics and therapy of diseases of the nervous system, which consists of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Careful examination by specialists, in order to arrive at a clear diagnosis, should therefore precede any planned neurological rehabilitation. The first step is to identify the dysfunctions. Special therapies can then be used to activate and modify the residual neural functions, and support the natural neural regeneration processes. Reducing the suffering of the patient and achieving their social reintegration with the greatest possible independence is thereby paramount. The broad offer of therapeutic treatments at the Nuhr Medical Center enables the treatment of a wide range of neurological disorders.

“Neurorehabilitative treatments only achieve their goal if they are applied with regularity and intensity.”University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr

Living and dining by desire

The Nuhr Medical Center’s accommodation buildings, with a total of 24 single and 32 double rooms, as well as three apartments, are spread around the regimen and rehabilitation center – the majority of them hidden and sheltered between trees and green areas. The patients themselves choose how and where they would like to stay. All of our rooms are equipped with a shower, WC, telephone, satellite TV and a minibar, and we also have a number of handicapped accessible rooms. Our establishment offers all the amenities of a family-run hotel. Apartment guests – alone or accompanied – are free to cater for themselves or use the restaurant of the Nuhr Medical Center. As physical well-being plays a major role in successful regimen and rehabilitation programmes and a general state of well-being is always beneficial, our restaurant also always takes into consideration the individual wishes of our guests. Our young and highly-committed chef de cuisine and his team cater to the every need of our guests with creative cuisine. It goes without saying that we also take into consideration the individual needs of guests with allergies or special dietary constraints.

Healthy bathing and sauna pleasure

Patients and guests are welcome to relax in our heated indoor swimming pool. Those who would like to exercise can take part in our aqua fitness training or use our pebble pool to strengthen their foot muscles. Guests are also free to use our aqua fitness equipment after a brief introduction by one of our physiotherapists. Sauna enthusiasts can enjoy our original Finnish regulated sauna with professionally-trained staff. We also have a bio-sauna with light therapy and relaxing music for heat-sensitive guests and patients with cardiovascular diseases or venous problems.

Picturesque setting

The market town of Senftenberg is situated a few minutes from the medieval city of Krems, embedded in the wine terraces of the famous Wachau Valley. The town is most famous for the ruins of Senftenberg Castle and the excellent wines of its renowned winemakers. Senftenberg is an ideal starting point for excursions to the Wachau Valley, the Waldviertel or even Vienna.

Inviting outdoor activities

A wide range of sporting opportunities, such as tennis, hiking, wine hiking, cycling, mountain biking, fishing, clay pigeon and small-bore shooting, and the extensive health care offer of the Nuhr Medical Center, as well as wonderful wine taverns and traditional restaurants, help to ensure that your stay is pleasant and enjoyable.

Krems an der Donau – a sight worth seeing

A mere eight kilometres from where the Wachau Valley ends, lies one of the Danube’s most beautiful landscapes, the city of Krems. The city is characterised by its over thousand-year history, the appeal of its attractive setting on the banks of the Danube and a delightful medieval old town. A visit to the “Art Mile of Krems” (Kunstmeile), with its Art Gallery, Caricature Museum and Minority Church in the Stein district is highly recommended to culture aficionados. The small village of Und lies between Krems and Stein, and is known for its 400-year-old monastery.

The Wachau Cultural Landscape

The world-famous 30 km section of the Danube between Melk and Krems known as the Wachau is one of the most beautiful river valleys in the world. It is renowned for its excellent wines, apricots and unique cultural landscape. The Danube and the renowned Stein terraces characterise its landscape. The famous Abbeys of Melk and Göttweig are major cultural monuments and form the cornerstones of the Wachau, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the Wachau Cultural Landscape in 2000. The National Geographic Traveler magazine declared the Wachau “Best Historical Destination” in 2009.

The Nuhr doctor dynasty

In 1954, Austrian doctor and high-frequency electrotherapy pioneer Otto Nuhr and his wife founded their own “Health Clinic” in Senftenberg near Krems. The focus on electrophysical medicine and hydrotherapy allowed the successful health clinic to soon develop into a renowned regimen and rehabilitation center, whose highest standards of medical expertise and outstanding service today attract patients not only from Austria, but also the neighbouring European countries. It was above all, the high-frequency therapies according to the Dr. Otto Nuhr method and their excellent results during regimen that established the outstanding reputation of the Nuhr Center. It was complemented by the “familiar atmosphere” of a center managed exclusively by family members. Dr. Otto Nuhr was succeeded by his sons, Dr. Peter Nuhr sr. and Dr. Heinz Nuhr, who were lovingly, actively and always patiently supported by their wives, Dr. Magdalena Nuhr and Lieselotte Nuhr, who continued the successful legacy of their father. The family-run company is now managed by University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr, the grandson of the founder. Among the doctors and specialists at the Nuhr Medical Center are also his still-active father, Dr. Heinz Nuhr, his brother, Dr. Georg Nuhr and his cousin, Dr. Peter Nuhr jr. who is employed as a medical consultant. Since February 2012, Mag. Mayr Nuhr - the wife of University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr - has been in charge of administration and human resources at the Nuhr Medical Center.

Great atmosphere

The familiar atmosphere at the Nuhr Medical Center is not re- stricted to family members alone. University Professor Dr. Martin Nuhr places a great emphasis on values such as respect, tolerance and equal treatment throughout the entire team. Only if all of the employees feel comfortable will the sentiment also be reflected on the guests and patients, especially as a pleasant atmosphere also benefits successful healing. The fact that doctor and therapist team are not changed, but remain the same for the patient throughout their entire stay, is considered a key factor in ensuring the satisfaction of the clientele and staff by the head of the clinic. That leads to a low staff turnover rate and also motivates many patients to come back. The Nuhr Medical Center employs about 60 staff, over half of them women, making it one of the largest employers in the region.

Celebrity regimen

The clinic’s guestbook provides impressive evidence that “regimen at the Nuhr Center in Senftenberg” have always been something very special and includes names such as German actor and singer Hans Albers, Austrian-German singer, dancer and actress Marika Rökk, Austrian actor Hans Moser, former German President Heinrich Lübke and former Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky; who all trusted in the medical and therapeutic team of the center – for preventive and curative treatments – and of course the often “healing powers” of the wine in this very fertile region. Nothing has changed in that respect, celebrities from the worlds of politics, business and art still come to the Nuhr Medical Center to regenerate and recover – often with their families.

Almost a member of the familyFritz Kohlmann has been making the “pilgrimage” to Senftenberg for almost a quarter of a century. He considers the 1,750 kilometres that he drives back and forth to get there well worth it. “23 years ago I was about to be operated,” remembers the 78-year-old, but he has not yet gone under the knife to this day. “Thanks to the natural treatment methods of the Nuhr Medical Center, I have been spared surgery to this day,” says the gratitude-filled German, who lives in Bad Kreuznach, 50 kilometres south-east of Frankfurt. He especially appreciates the natural electro- and hydrotherapies because they are pleasant, refresh the cell tissue and “don’t pump toxins into my body”. The fact that he has grown very fond of the people over the years is another plus point: “After 23 years, one develops bonds to both the place and the family.” And it goes without saying that Fritz Kohlmann will also be coming to Senftenberg again this year.
