Frederick Andrew Holmes

DOB: July 2, 1953

Missing: May 25, 1955

Grahamsville, Sullivan County, New York

Long before cell phones, internet and ATM’s,

1955 represented the good old days, when our

34th President was Dwight D. Eisenhower,

McDonald’s had just opened its 9th restaurant,

and the song Rock Around the Clock had just

been premiered by the Comets.

1955 also was a time before AMBER ALERT’s, a

time when television was seen as a luxury and

not many households had one. A time before

organizations would come to help in the search

for a missing person.

Frederick Andrew Holmes, a 22 month old

baby, went missing in 1955.

“Freddie was the delight of our fam-ily. We lived in a very rural area, with the next farm about a mile away. No TV in rural farm area back then. Therefore, we spent our time with each other and we had strong family bonds.” - Dorothy Holmes Brown

WHERE IS FREDDIE? Missing without a trace for 55 years.

“Our relationship was special as I was his eldest sister, age 12 when he was born, like a second mother. He was my heart. I loved to sing

to him and teach him nursery rhymes.” -Dorothy Holmes Brown

“I miss this sweet baby boy and have never given up hope he could reunite with his birth family one day. He

is a Holmes and he belongs with us” - Holmes Siblings

Dorothy Holmes Brown- “If I were to meet Freddie today he would be 56, with likely no or very little memory of his toddler years with his family of birth. After the initial greeting I would ask if his missing years away from his family, "Were you happy and well cared for?". In my mind and all of our family, actually, we thought he was taken by someone who wanted a darling baby boy. So therefore, we prayed he was well cared for. Too horrible to think otherwise and even THINK that he was being mistreated.” -April 2010

The landlord, a shoe repair man, was working in his

cobbler shed nearby when Freddie peeked in to speak to

him. The landlord was the last person to see him.

The search for Freddie included over a 1,000 people.

They searched the woods and the area around the home,

they turned over his mother’s garden and searched the

landlord’s shed.

Authorities did not find him but did find a stolen power

saw underneath the floor boards of the shed and charged

the landlord with possession of stolen property. He was

never connected to the disappearance of Freddie.

The Holmes family has never been the same since the

disappearance of baby Freddie. Tragedy lingered in the

shadows, gripping its claws and not letting go. The fam-

ily relived the terror every time investigators would

bring haunting images of unidentified deceased children.

The sorrow took its toll on Freddie’s father; he took his

own life in the same woods they searched for his son.

With a broken heart his mother passed away on her 61st

birthday of a heart attack.

His mother and father, along with four of their children,

passed away never knowing what happened to baby

Freddie.

What seemed like any ordinary Wednesday morning

would turn out to be anything but ordinary for the

Holmes family. On the morning of May 25, 1955,

Gertrude tended to her garden while her older children

went to school and Freddie, her 22 month old baby boy

played nearby. Freddie, dressed in his play clothes,

brown faded corduroy overalls and a long-sleeved polo

shirt, was walking around the front yard of his home.

Today, only two of Freddie’s sisters remain.

Dorothy Brown Holmes and Janet Haiss Holmes

are both still searching for answers regarding the

disappearance of their sweet baby brother.

The initial investigation examined the actions of

both the parents and their landlord. Just like in-

vestigations of today both parents were asked to

take a polygraph test to remove any suspicion.

Freddie’s investigation remains a cold case today.

The Holmes sisters are trying to help the investi-

gation that ran cold so many years ago. Through

modern technology they have given their family

a chance to someday have closure in disappear-

ance of their baby brother.

Through modern technology cold cases now have a chance to one day be solved. Organizations like NamUs help professionals and families search through databases of missing and unidentified persons.

Modern Technology

Giving Life To A Cold Case

Modern Technology The Boy in the Box was an unidentified 4 to 6

year old child was found in Philadelphia, PA on

February 25,1957. He was found in a box that

originally contained a bassinet. There was no

matching missing children at the time they dis-

covered the boy. In 1998 the Philadelphia P.D.

exhumed the body to use the modern technol-

ogy of DNA extraction. This DNA was com-

pared to the Holmes sister’s DNA in hopes to

bring closure to their baby’s brother’s disappear-

ance. The results were bitter sweet. Their DNA

did not match, meaning their brother may still

be alive but the mystery continues. The Holmes

sister hope to someday get the closure that their

parents sought after for so many years.

ick Andrew Holmes please contact:

Case #: FSS000425 NamUs MP # 5584

Teaming up with the National Missing and Uni-

dentified Persons System (www.namus.gov) the

Holmes sisters provided their DNA to cross

check any unidentified remains that may match

their baby brother.

NamUs was developed with the help of experts

in all areas of missing and unidentified persons

case management, including victim’s advocacy

and families. It has been a big help for the

Holmes sisters. Using this free web-based tool

they can search over 6,300 unidentified remains

that have been entered by law enforcement,

medical examiners/coroners. They can also

search through the 3,300 missing persons that

are in the NamUs database.

Anyone can search through the many missing

and unidentified persons, they can print missing

person posters and enter a missing loved one.

The Holmes sisters had come across an uniden-

tified boy in their search, he was found in 1957,

he is referred to as the “Boy in the Box”.

to learn more about child safety, visit www.take25.org.

At Home Teach your children their full names, address, and home tele-phone number. Make sure they know your full name. Make sure your children know how to reach you at work or on your cell phone. Teach your children how and when to use 911 and make sure your children have a trusted adult to call if they’re scared or have an emergency. 4. Instruct children to keep the door locked and not to open the door to talk to anyone when they are home alone. Set rules with your children about having visitors over when you’re not home and how to answer the telephone. 5. Choose babysitters with care. Obtain references from family, friends, and neighbors. Once you have chosen the care-giver, drop in unexpectedly to see how your children are doing. Ask children how the experience with the caregiver was and lis-ten carefully to their responses. On the Net 6. Learn about the Internet. The more you know about how the Web works, the better prepared you will be to teach your children about potential risks. Visit www.NetSmartz.org for more information about Internet safety. 7. Place the family computer in a common area, rather than a child’s bedroom. Also, monitor their time spent online and the Web sites they’ve visited and establish rules for Internet use. 8. Know what other access your child may have to the Internet at school, libraries, or friends’ homes. 9. Use privacy settings on social networking sites to limit con-

tact with unknown users and make sure screen names don’t reveal too much about your children.

10. Encourage your children to tell you if anything they encounter online makes them feel sad, scared, or confused. 11. Caution children not to post revealing information or inappro-priate photos of themselves or their friends online. Going to and from School 12. Walk or drive the route to and from school with your children, pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. If your children ride a bus, visit the bus stop with them to make sure they know which bus to take. 13. Remind kids to take a friend whenever they walk or bike to school. Remind them to stay with a group if they’re waiting at the bus stop. 14. Caution children never to accept a ride from anyone unless you have told them it is OK to do so in each instance.

Out and About 15. Take your children on a walking tour of the neighborhood and tell them whose homes they may visit without you. 16. Remind your children it’s OK to say NO to anything that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused and teach your children to tell you if anything or anyone makes them feel this way. 17. Teach your children to ask permission before leaving home. 18. Remind your children not to walk or play alone outside. 19. Teach your children to never approach a vehicle, occupied or not, unless they know the owner and are accompanied by a par-ent, guardian, or other trusted adult. 20. Practice “what if” situations and ask your children how they would respond. “What if you fell off your bike and you needed help? Who would you ask?” 21. Teach your children to check in with you if there is a change of plans. 22. During family outings, establish a central, easy-to-locate spot to meet for check-ins or should you get separated. 23. Teach your children how to locate help at theme parks, sports stadiums, shopping malls, and other public places. Also, identify those people who they can ask for help, such as uniformed law enforcement, security guards and store clerks with nametags. 24. Help your children learn to recognize and avoid potential risks, so that they can deal with them if they happen. 25. Teach your children that if anyone tries to grab them, they should make a scene and make every effort to get away by kick-ing, screaming, and resisting.

With limited memory of his father he will have to rely on loved ones to fill in the memory of his daddy. Julian was gruesomely assaulted outside of an apartment complex by seven unknown assailants. Then as he tried to escape in his mothers 1992 Gold Nissan Maxima he was dragged out of the vehicle and forced into the back seat. The Maxima sped away driven by one of the abductors. A MOTHER’S MEMORY

My son was 5 years old. We had just finished watching a Superman television show. I watched him get up and go toward the bathroom, and come back with a red beach towel. Of course, we made it into a cape for him, and he went outside to Be Superman! All of a sudden I had that “uh-oh” feeling...the one that says its too quiet out there? I opened the front door just as he, on his tricycle, was whooshing past me on the front porch and FLY! I caught him around the waist and lifted him just before the trike went flying and crashed into the fence. He turned and hugged me and said, “my supermom”. Oh, to hold him like that again and be his supermom! Won’t you please help me bring my son home and those who hurt him to their knees?

College Student Found Bryce Daniel Tarter attended Armstrong Atlantic

State University (AASU) located in the outskirts of

Savannah, Georgia. Classes were in full swing af-

ter the long holiday break. On the evening of Janu-

ary 30, 2010 he and a few friends attended a party

an hour away at Georgia Southern University. They

returned back to the AASU campus in the early

morning of January 31. Bryce got back in his 2000

Nissan Frontier Crew Cab truck and headed to his

off-campus home where he lived with his aunt and

uncle.

Bryce was a missing person for over 3 months, he

was gone without a trace. On April 27, 2010

Bryce’s truck and body were recovered from a

nearby creak located less than mile from the AASU

campus. The long journey for the Tarter family to

find their beloved Bryce ended that day.

Bryce is gone but not forgotten.
