Our Student Representative Council members in Year 6 sold ice-creams and ice- cups and raised $211.75 for Fiji Cyclone-UNICEF. I would like to particularly mention Tiffany Chamberlain in Year 4 Refeld who brought along $33.45 which she donated generously from her pocket money.

The Year 6 classes celebrated Harmony Day with a very sumptuous lunch with an amazing array of dishes from all over the world.

HORIZONS NEWS Year 5/6 Horizons students celebrated the final day of Gifted Awareness Week as part of the NT Association of the Education of Gifted and Talented Open Day at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory on Saturday. Our students, along with Miss Temira Wallis and Mrs. Baker Brown were involved in organising the events on the day, including a variety of exciting science investigations in the Museum’s Discovery Centre. Many people visited the centre and enjoyed the investigations, led by our students and Miss Wallis. Our students did an outstanding job throughout the day. Other activities included visiting the Towers of Tomorrow Lego Exhibition and a fantastic Corrugated Iron Theatre Workshop. At the end of the day, Mrs. Rosita Kandiah from the Department of Education announced the winners of the Gifted Awareness Week Schools Competition. Our 5/6 Horizons students had worked on individual entries over the past three weeks with Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Baker Brown. The competition involved creating an artefact to describe something from the year 3016. We were thrilled when it was announced that Grace Doherty won the overall Primary School category. The judges were impressed by Grace’s consideration of the cultural significance of the Pyramid and her reasoning to explain the dramatic changes to the pyramid over time. Around 7 schools were involved in the competition and there were 115 entries in total. Grace’s Pyramid of Giza – the winning entry.

STUDENT VOICE

Our next classes to display their amazing writing and journalist skills are Year 5

Faircloth. They have written some amazing recounts about their experience in learning

about Earth Day and preparations for National Day of Anti Bullying.

Last Friday 5 Faircloth took their chairs and tables outside for Earth Day. It was boiling hot and we had to deal with the heat, birds chirping, dogs barking, and of course, the weather. This was all to see how much electricity we use in a day. In the morning, the class brought all our tables and chairs under a huge tree for shade. Before assembly we practiced our assembly item with our buddies (1 Bishop) in the Old Lunch Shed. We had our performance about bullying and had recess, which of course we came back to our outdoor classroom. By then we were very sweaty. After recess, we had our spelling test, which was hard to concentrate due to the heat and background noises. Even the times tables were hard because over half the class couldn’t hear the instructions. But the next hour was alright. Some people went to Horizons, some to choir and some stayed. When the bell was going to come back from lunch, big drops of rain came. Then a big storm came. Everyone screamed, “Get the bags and run!” Once the rain eased and there was only little droplets of rain we brought back our tables and chairs and cleaned up. Overall it was a blast of fun and really hot! By Alyssa Ting

5 Faircloth’s “Earth Hour” On the 18th of March, we had a special celebration called ‘Earth Hour’, but we did it for more than an hour. It is usually at night and on a weekend, but we celebrated it the day before. It’s when you don’t use any electricity. This includes:

1. No microwaves/freezers-so we had to buy or eat uncooked food.

2. Computers – Our class couldn’t use computers for work or research.

3. Air conditioning – the main use of electricity that is really important for hot weather.

Early in the morning, Miss Faircloth asked for help from other students. They helped her move the heavy items out onto the oval. Thank goodness it wasn’t raining. Unfortunately, some of our class couldn’t help because they were, too busy, playing or late. School started and we began to arrange where we were going to sit. Miss Faircloth marked the roll and since I was the lunch order person, I took the lunch orders. We made paper fans to help with the heat. We went with our buddies to practice, and then perform our assembly item. It was excellent, I should say. Then it was recess and we could eat outside. Next, we did our spelling and maths test and swapped books to check. I went to Horizons, some went to choir and then some stayed with Miss Faircloth. When we got back to class we played silent ball. It was harder to play outside because we had to avoid the ball going into the trees. Afterwards it was lunchtime. Our class had to move all of our chairs and tables at the end of lunch. Sadly, it rained, so we all got wet. I remembered that I prayed for rain after lunch which was a huge mistake. I forgot to add, “When the items and people were in the classroom”. We then had to clean the tables. I wasn’t too tired because I am very hyper and energetic. When the bell (which was a bit broken) rang, we all went home. It was lovely to go outside with the fresh breeze and the smooth ground. Although it was hot like a microwave, we experienced what it is like without electricity. That sure was a fantastic day. By Kimberly Mallari

On Friday the 18th of March, 5 Faircloth spent one day outside on the oval for Earth Hour, or for us, Earth Day!

In the morning, we got all of our desks, chairs, books, trays and the mini whiteboard outside on the cricket oval. That was extremely hard. But we got to choose where we sat. After we got everything set up most of our class were already really hot and sweaty. We then started to rehearse for our National Stop Bullying Performance. After recess we did our spelling test and maths quiz outside which I found was really hard because there was heaps of noise going on. Also, my seat was soaked with sweat which just goes to show how much the air conditioning means to us. When the first hour went past most of us went to choir and Horizons. The people that stayed back did a pop quiz with Miss Faircloth. At lunchtime, we did not get to heat up our food in the microwave or put anything in the fridge. But the good part was that we got to eat out on the oval. During lunch time it started to rain really heavily which we did not expect so we had to carry all of our chairs, tables, bags and the mini whiteboard into the Old Lunch Shed, then the classroom. I had to pull Miss Faircloth’s wheelie chair which was really hard across the grass and I got soaked. When we moved everything into our classroom all of our shoes were soaked so we got to take them off. That made our feet really cold. After that we made icy-cups for Harmony Day. By Anna Zimmermann.

Our Day on Friday On Friday we had to move everything outside for Earth Day. Most people had lots of fun moving all of the tables and chairs but some thought it was extremely tiring.

In the morning we had our assembly item so we went to practice with our buddies. While I was backstage and in Mr. Small’s office, there was air conditioning so we had to use the power there. When we had recess we were kind of breaking rules because we were eating on the oval. We also go to play on the equipment while we ate. After recess we had our spelling and maths test. I liked how we did it outside because it was different and we didn’t have to look at a boring board for ages. Before lunch we went off to Horizons and Choir while some kids stayed with Miss Faircloth for a pop quiz with questions from maths, history, spelling, general knowledge, writing and science. When it was eating time, it was starting to sprinkle slightly but after a while it stopped. Just before lunch finished it started pouring so everyone helped to but the tables and chairs under the old lunch shed. Once they were all there we took them to class because we were only able to have our Earth Day until after lunch. When all of that was done, we cleaned all of the tables and chairs because they were muddy and dirty. After that we made ice cups for Harmony Day. It was one of the best school days because we got to have it outside. We did have to use a bit of power if you think about it but I really liked how it rained and we got to move it all back.
