What did we plan to do…

Internet Application team


Goals

Set up an affordable, secure and reliable Mail and Web access for all students and staff of the National University of Laos

Educate selected System Administrators on the maintenance of Mail/Web servers and the supporting services



Primary Objectives

Create NUOL Mail accounts for students and staff Set User Quota on Web, FTP and Mail Server Install Supporting Services:

DHCP Server DNS Server

Implement Dial-up Service Setup Documentation and Training for System

Administrators Providing suggestions for future development of

applications services



Secondary Objectives

Setting up: File Server Proxy Server Firewall

Location: IT Center, Dong Dok



Changes in Objectives

Why Changes?Adapting to new or updated information




In project plan, stated the installation of a Web, Mail and FTP server.Since services were already installed the

team has changed the objective to upgrade them by setting Quota on the user accounts




Earlier an update of the Database Layout was mentioned as an objectiveOn arrival New Database at the

administration was discovered which needed no update




The Installation of a Firewall has been addedAdds extra security to the networkWith the installation of a Firewall students

can’t bypass the proxy server and access blocked websites

User quota is set on Web, FTP and Mail user accountsSaves valuable disk spaceSpace on hard drives is shared among

students and staff at NUOL.




Shell Script to generate Web, FTP and Mail accounts for users has been made In order to create an account students must

fill in a form which is created by the team

Why a form to create Mail accounts?Obtain user details and their consent for

future reference




DNS and DHCP Servers are installed Proxy Server has been installed

Caching of websites is functional Frequently visited websites load fast Efficient use of available bandwidth

Blocking of websites is functional Web addresses are checked every time with a

collection of illegal websites and in-ethical words.




File Server has been installedFew user accounts have been generated

Script to create more accounts has been made available

Students and staff can access their files from anywhere on the network




Firewall has been installed initially not an objectiveUpon arrival the need for a firewall became

clear to the team

Blocks attacks from outside the network Prevents the students to bypass the

proxy server and access blocked websites




Dail-up service has been installed Students and staff having a valid dial-up account

can access the internet from a remote location



Accomplished - Documentation

Documentation for local system administrators has been setup on the following services: Proxy Server File Server Dial-up Server Web Server Mail Server Setting User Quota’s Generating User Accounts




2 groups of system administrators (SA)SA at the IT CenterSA from the Faculties

The SA from different faculties were trained on the installation of Basic Services (Web and E-mail)

Proper documentation was provided before the training




For the training of the SA, Web and E-mail lab procedures from KTH were enhanced




Enhancements made:Remove redundant information in lab

instructions Too much text confuses trainees

Steps in setting up the services were clarifiedCode has clearly been highlightedTranslation of the documents for better

understanding

The System administrators were trained on setting up Web and Mail ServersTools Used In the training

Handouts of the Labs Whiteboard Multimedia projector for demonstration

After the training sessions, NIAS team has reviewed the trainingsSome SA did setup the service and some

were still struggling Conclusion Repetition of the Trainings needed

Main challenges the team has faced Insufficient Information flowHardware Delays Incorrect Hardware



Challenges - Information flow

Due to cultural differences as well as language barriers information was hard to access

SolutionAsk a lot of questions



Challenges – Hardware delay

Hardware for the servers arrived after 4 weeks in the implementation period

Solution Install services on normal workstation and

then copy the configuration files to the actual server when they arrived



Challenges – Hardware delay

Concerning the File Server High End Server ordered

Delivery time Last day in the afternoon

No time to configure the service on the newly arrived server

Solution Lao Team members have the proper knowledge and

documentation to copy the configurations to the new Server.



Challenges – Incorrect Hardware

Dail-up Vendor supplied a router with a digital dial-up

solution when an analog was needed and asked for!

Solution After long discussions the team ordered the analog

module which arrived 3 days before departure After working till 23:00 on the last workday, the Dial-

up Service finally was launched and properly tested

Create more user accounts for Mail, Web, FTP, Dial-up and File Server System Administrators and the Lao Team

members have been equipped with the proper Knowledge and Documentation to do so

Course management System

E-learning ToolSupports web-based teaching and learning

Share Course Sheets Make Announcements Have on-line Discussions Submit assignments Etc…



Voice over IP

Make phone calls over the local area network without being charged for itMakes it easier and more affordable for

teachers, deans, etc… to communicate with each other

Cisco Router with VoIP expandability is already installed at NUOL



Video Conferencing

Send Voice and Video over the Local Area Network to one or more remote locationsVideo Conferencing provides NUOL with the

option to deliver lectures to students from a remote location without the teacher or the students having to travel long distances
